If trolling would be my intention I would post the news from the following site...

That's rich: Indian bureaucrats say 50 cents a day is all it takes to beat poverty
India's Planning Commission sets poverty line at 50 cents a day, allowing just 2 cents for health care -- in other words, not enough for an aspirin

India | Poverty | Planning Commission farce

What is it they say? There are lies, damn lies, and statistics? Well this is taking it to the proverbial next level.

India's Planning Commission, the powerful cabal of wonks responsible for shaping the government's five year expenditure plans, has took it on their wise heads to define what it means to be poor in this destitute country. And from their veritable mansions in central Delhi, they've come up with some stupendous figures.

In its affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, the panel quoting the Tendulkar Committee's recommendations said the urban poverty line is fixed at an expenditure of Rs 4,284 per month while it is Rs 3,905 a month in rural areas, according to the Hindustan Times. That means a family of five has to pay less than $100 a month for health care, food and education to be considered poor. Those spending more would be classified as "above the poverty line" (APL).

So what does that mean? A tank of gas costs about half of that princely sum, to give you a rough idea. A Big Mac would knock out a whole day's allotted spending. But to put it in terms less relevant to those of us in the TFPLTU category (too far above the poverty line to understand) and more relevant to those in the ICFBPL category (I can't flipping believe the poverty line), here's a bit more from the HT.

Jean Dreze, a member of the National Advisory Council, said the Planning Commission's allowance for health expenditure is less than one rupee a day — barely enough to buy an aspirin.

Another NAC member, Aruna Roy, said the ridiculous limit for the poverty level demonstrated the government's lack of empathy for the poor.

“It is obvious that this extremely low estimated expenditure is a threshold aimed only at artificially reducing the number of persons “below poverty line” so as to reduce government expenditure on the poor,” she said in a signed statement.

Nah, your intention is to embarrass India forcing Indians to find crap about BD. What is shocking is that you guys are so willing to humiliate your own country just to take a piss at India. No need to wonder why South Asia as a whole is poor. People are absolutely incapable of fixing their own disgusting life and are surviving purely on misery of others. Shame...

There are many people in this forum who hide their 'real face' but never miss an opportunity to expose India's 'real face'.

The benchmark -- barely enough to buy a return ticket on New Delhi's underground -- has been used for years to help calculate who gets subsidizes in a country where malnutrition rates in some states are worse than the sub-Saharan Africa despite Asia's third largest economy enjoying years of economic boom.

True... this common knowledge should be there in the mind of the Indian government and its planning commission. If they want to cut the subsidy it should have been done with true stat instead of crook stat like this. But Indians should face the reality. This country has largest amount of poor living below poverty line if 78% figure is true. Percent of malnutrition children is higher then sub sahran africian countries as pointed by the article. Trying to reduce poverty should be the biggest priority instead of fake show off of super power status which india are not likely to be in any recent future.

And what if they don't do anything you say? You will quit showing the real face of India?

So many south Asians flood to other countries for better life. Its shocking to realize that someone from BD has gall to talk about poverty in India or vice versa. Whole of South Asia is so poor and behind rest of the world. I wonder how these people go on with their life being so pathetic. Every stats that puts India at bottom of some list surprisingly has all it's neighbor next to it (except SL)! Disgusting people. Instead of trying to end the misery in their own country...

Yet another poverty thread.
I thought it was a topic not to bring up?
India Pakistan and Bangladesh all have too many people living below the poverty line. It concerns me and upsets me to think this. I wish you guys would see a hungry kid in India is the same as a hungry kid in Pakistan or in Banlgadesh. Wish you guys would engage brain cells before putting up posts.

Bangladeshis talking of others' poverty has to be the joke of the decade.

On topic: The international poverty line is $1.25 in PPP terms. This limit is a little over that.

Of course it is not enough for a dignified life with basic necessities.

Of course the subcontinental countries have low per capita income.

137 India 1,477
155 Pakistan 1,007
164 Bangladesh 673

I hope the figures will look much better in a few years. India should have double this figure in 5-6 years.

Mate im lucky i wake up and are not worried what im going to eat or how im going to fend for my family. It hurts to think most of OUR population in the sub continent desire everyday is to feed themselves and not starve. To think that someone gets a buz by putting this post up and snigger across the border and laugh is clearly dim and have little morals. Wish i politicos in all our nations were not as corrupt but thats a different issue. I pray things improve in all our nations and people will see sense and stop posting hurtful and annoying posts
