Delhi Metro’s Phase-III gets cabinet nod

28 underground stations in Delhi Metro Phase-III
Metro phase 3: 28 underground stations in offing - The Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Metro has started work on finalizing stations on the alignment even as it awaits a nod from the group of ministers (GoM) for the third phase.

This phase will have a record number of 28 underground stations. The total number of underground stations in the network at present, including the two phases, is only 31. The reason, says the Delhi Metro, is an attempt to cause less traffic disruption. The new alignments in the third phase go through some of the most congested areas in the city.

According to officials of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), around 40% of phase III will be built underground and three different stretches will pass below the existing underground metro corridors in the city. These are the underground stretches from Sarojini Nagar to INA on the Mukundpur-Yamuna Vihar corridor, Indira Gandhi domestic airport to Kalkaji on the Janak Puri West to Kalindi Kunj corridor and Mandi House to ITO stretch. They will be passing over the Jehangirpuri-HUDA city centre line, the airport express link and the NOIDA-Dwarka line respectively.

Delhi Metro wants to use latest technology for the construction. Officials say that having a majority of the stations underground makes it a challenging task. "By constructing many underground stretches, DMRC will also be able to avoid causing damage to the existing infrastructure such as flyovers and roads," a DMRC spokesperson said.

The total length of the underground corridor presently is 48.06km, while in phase III the underground stretch will be 41.044km. The first phase of Delhi Metro's construction had 13.17km of underground metro lines while the second phase had 34.89km.

The longest underground section of phase III will be from IGI Airport (domestic) to Kalkaji on the Janakpuri West-Kalindi Kunj corridor, which will be 17.288km long. The Mukundpur-Yamuna Vihar corridor will have underground lines of 14.386km and the Central Secretariat-Kashmere Gate corridor will have a total of 9.370km underground lines.

"As per our plans, most of the underground work will be done through tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and new Austrian tunneling method (NATM). The stations will be constructed with the help of cut-and-cover technology," the spokesperson added.

Initial tests such as geo-technical surveys, soil surveys, utility tests are being conducted by specialized agencies on all the new corridors. Tenders have been finalized for the construction of the Mandi House and Janpath stations on the Central Secretariat-Kashmere Gate corridor.

Delhi Metro is operational for last 9 years in Delhi after it Noida, Gurgaon.

Metro projects in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Jaipur are under conscruction.
Soon Faridabad, Gaziabad, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar, Kochi, Lucknow Metro projects will also take off.

Delhi Metro’s Phase III, which will cost Rs 28,000 crore (US $ 6.2 billion) for 108 km.

but buddy, metro is operational in kolkata for last 27 years...and it has expanded to even the remotest parts of city and even outside kolkata connecting the country sides.....infact a project is almost complete where the metro will pass from under the river hooghly river bed connecting the two banks that will connect kolkata with howrah.

Delhi contributes much lesser than Mumbai.

While counting Delhi's GDP, They include Delhi, New Delhi and 9 other districts of UP and Haryana including Noida and Gurgaon. Mumbai is only Mumbai Town and Mumbai Suburbs.

Check the Tax Revenues of Delhi and compare it to Mumbai.

Er....I am not sure where to even start...

Airport metro to be suspended from Sunday

07_07_12-metro1c.jpg

Airport Metro operations will be suspended indefinitely from Sunday for the inspection and repair of "serious" construction flaws found by Reliance Infrastructure, which operates the high-speed line.

Officials at Delhi Airport Metro Express Pvt Ltd (DAMEPL), a subsidiary of Reliance Infrastructure, did not, however, specify the time it will take to rectify the faults.
The 22.7-km line is the only corridor run on a public-private partnership by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which built it.

The line connects New Delhi Railway Station with IGI airport's Terminal 3 and Dwarka Sector 21, and has a daily ridership of about 20,000.

The trains are supposed to run at 105 kmph but the speed has been dropping these last three weeks, to as low as 15 kmph on some stretches.

Sources said Reliance engineers noticed major technical defects in the civil structure in March.

"More than 250 locations were found to be critically affected,"
they said.

"We will carry out a joint inspection with DMRC and a private consultant in the next few days to identify the extent of damage and the reason behind it. We are not sure if the faults are due to design fault or poor workmanship," a source said.

A DAMEPL team made a presentation on the faults at a meeting chaired by urban development secretary and DMRC chairman Sudhir Krishna on Monday.

"We have a meeting on Saturday with all stakeholders to discuss the issue," Krishna said.

"We will ask the concessionaire to tell us the date by which they'll be able to resume services," said a DMRC spokesperson.

Airport metro on shaky ground

It's been a "providential escape" for lakhs of people who had been riding the Airport Metro line this year. For several months, trains had been running on tracks laid on damaged bearings, an inspection by the service operator revealed. Keeping in view the safety of commuters, the concessionaire company, Delhi Airport Metro Express Pvt Ltd (DAMEPL) — a subsidiary of Reliance Infrastructure — had initially restricted the speed of trains on the 6.5km elevated stretch about three weeks ago. But it finally decided to suspend the service from Sunday indefinitely.
Company sources said in view of the defects in Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) works, which have resulted apparently due to poor workmanship or faults in design, the continued operation of the project is not only unsafe but may be dangerous to the lives and property.

"Safety is paramount to us. We will now reinitiate the service only when the repair works by Delhi Metro are completed and safety nod is given by Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS)," said a DAMEPL official.

When the DAMEPL had observed the first year of operation the company officials had attributed this as a temporary phase caused due to 'routine inspection' of the system.

But the situation never improved. Rather the trains kept on losing momentum. Finally, a joint survey by DAMEPL and DMRC had reportedly identified major faults on the tracks.

"I was aware that there were some problems in the civil structure of the airport metro line. But I was not aware about the magnitude of the problem," said Rajiv Chaudhry, executive director (Works Planning), ministry of railways.

"There are 250-300 bearings in the civil structure, which are critical and may cause accidents if the services are not suspended immediately. Also rectification cannot be done properly unless traffic pressure is removed from the track," said an official.

"Whenever such problems occur, the usual practice is to impose restrictions on the vehicle loads and on the vehicle speeds. Some restrictions on the speed have already been imposed on the airport line also. But the main concern will be that of possible derailment especially if unacceptable deviations in the track alignment take place," said an official of Shirish Patel & Associates Consultants Pvt Ltd, a globally reputed construction major, which has recently conducted an inspection on the line.

Good...hopefully all flaws will be corrected in due time. Its a marvelous ride this airport line I tell u. Traveled in it for complete 2 months during by internship.

Delhi airport metro likely to resume services in August, says Government

New Delhi: A day after suspending operations for an indefinite period at the Delhi Airport Metro Express, due to safety issues, the government today assured the public that it will be reopened once necessary repairs are complete.

"The Reliance Infrastructure reported that there are some defects in the civil structure. There are problems with the bearing which is the interface between the pillar and girder. Repairs have to be done below the girders and it is in odd kind of locations," said Sudhir Krishna, Secretary, Urban Development.

The 23-kilometre-long Delhi Airport Metro Express is one of the country's fastest metro corridors where trains run at speeds of 105 kilometres per hour. The line is barely 16 months old.

Reliance Infra operates and maintains the corridor, but the civil structure was built by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). Over 10 percent of the bearings, that's about 230 out of 2100, need repair.

Reliance Infra says the defects first surfaced during the annual inspection in May 2012 by the operator, Delhi Airport Metro Express, a subsidiary of Reliance Infra. The operator then reported the defects to the DMRC, the Government of India and the Government of Delhi early in June 2012.

Following the serious concerns raised by the operator regarding safety, speeds on the corridor were reduced to 25 kilometres per hour. The DMRC admitted the defects in the civil structures and has agreed to carry out necessary rectifications.

A committee comprising officials from the Indian Railways, Delhi Metro and Reliance Infrastructure is already going into the nature of defects and would submit a report within the next 10 days.

For a project that cost nearly Rs. 6000 crore, and used daily by thousands of commuters travelling to and from the capital's international airport, the inconvenience is huge.

"There was no prior announcement, but today they informed that they are closing, I am shocked," said a dejected commuter.

"I come from Dwarka to Shivaji stadium line. It had been very easy for me, but now it's going to be difficult," said another.

A suspension of two months that could well be further delayed for inspections and clearances once the repair is done means the impact on the image of India's flagship mass transit system is equally huge.
