India is spending 1.8%.

Modest hike in defence spending - Hindustan Times

India will spend 1.8 % of its GDP on defence this fiscal, the Union Budget for 2011-12 revealed. Experts, however, said defence spending ought to have been around 3% of the GDP, seen in the backdrop of China’s rising military might. Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee allocated a budget of Rs 1,64,415

crore to the armed forces, out of which R69,199 crore has been set aside for buying weapon systems and platforms.
The 11.5 % hike in defence spending over last year’s outlay of Rs 1,47,344 crore has been dubbed marginal by experts. The allocation includes a revenue expenditure of Rs 95,216 crore for meeting day-to-day expenses of the military.

China’s official defence budget for 2010 stands at $78 billion, but the Pentagon estimates its actual military spending to be upwards of $150 billion. The Communist neighbour is investing heavily in a range of capabilities.

Strategic affairs expert Air Vice Marshal Kapil Kak (retd) said, “The hike is hardly adequate to meet the military’s rising responsibilities in view of the feverish pace of China’s military modernisation. India’s defence modernisation gathered steam only during the last three to four years. Much needs to be done to build offensive capabilities in the long term.”

:disagree: We can not afford so many(3.5~5%) military expenditure. It will cause inflation, and inflation will cause social chaos.
I think it should be around 2~3%.

Can I request posters not to use the big font for no reason please. Its very irritating, and despite the visual illusion, no, it does not add any weight to your arguments. Thanks.

Then tell me. USA is now in recession with 14 trillion debt. Yet it spends 4.5% of its GDP on defence.

What word would you use to describe it??
The USA is different because it is a world empire and has active wars, hundreds of foreign bases all over the place and a military industrial complex that is well known to overpay for everything. China doesn't even have 1 operational aircraft carrier, no foreign bases, no active wars, etc. Consider that China is far more efficient and effective with every dollar it spends, compared to the US. Your $200 billion estimate is obviously wrong by a longshot.

We have some "experts" here who seem to know everything. I think CIA should consult with them next time instead of spending its money to recruit spies.

Just do the math yourself.

Current Chinese GDP nominal. 5.8 trillion.

5.8*0.035=200 billion dollars

200 billion dollars, minimum.

ohh, man.
the whole world are talking about China's threat and you guys are showing off how much China is investing on weapons, much more than the official source. haha
let's pretend we invest less than expected.:azn:

China says defence budget to rise 12.7 pct

BEIJING: China said on Friday its military spending for 2011 would rise 12.7 percent over last year, resuming double-digit hikes that have stoked regional disquiet about Beijing's expanding strength.

The increase in spending for the People's Liberation Army is likely to intensify concerns in Taiwan, Japan, India and other parts of Asia where other military forces are jostling against Beijing's expanded arsenal.

Chinese parliamentary spokesman Li Zhaoxing said the increase would bring the defence budget for the year to 601.1 billion yuan ($91.5 billion), compared to 532.1 billion yuan spent on defence in 2010. The budget went up by just 7.5 percent in 2010, after long periods of double-digit increases.

Li said the rise was justified and posed no threat. "China's defence spending is relatively low by world standards," he said. "China has always paid attention to restraining defence spending."

The Pentagon last month rolled out a record base budget for fiscal year 2012 of $553 billion, up $22 billion from the level enacted for 2010 . .

Many observers believe China's real military spending is far higher than what it reports.

"The real spend can often be buried elsewhere or not be disclosed at all," said Michael McKinley, a global strategy and international relations expert at the Australian National University's school of international relations.

"These numbers need to be interrogated very closely." Japan said on Thursday it scrambled military jets this week after Chinese naval airplanes flew near disputed islands in the East China Sea, although the Chinese did not enter Japan's airspace.

The Philippines has also demanded an explanation from China over an incident in a disputed area in the South China Sea in which it says two Chinese patrol boats threatened to ram a survey ship.

Other nations are upgrading their forces in response to China's buildup. India increased annual defence spending by about 11.6 percent this week and is shopping for advanced fighter jets, transport aircraft, surveillance helicopters and submarines.

RISING BILLS U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in January that a U.S. military presence in the Pacific was essential to restrain Chinese assertiveness. China chose his visit to Beijing to announce it had test-flown a stealth fighter.

China's growing military clout has been accompanied by an increasingly assertive tone in Chinese diplomacy.

Relations between Asia's biggest economies chilled last year when Japan detained the Chinese skipper of a boat that crashed into its ships near disputed isles in the East China Sea, the site of vast potential gas and oil reserves.

China's loud, renewed claims to a vast swathe of waters and mostly uninhabited islets in the South China Sea, along with the expansion of its military presence there, likewise rattled Southeast Asian nations in 2010.

China defense budget to stir regional disquiet

By Ben Blanchard

BEIJING | Fri Mar 4, 2011 2:09am EST

BEIJING (Reuters) - China will beef up its military budget by 12.7 percent this year, the government said on Friday, a return to double-digit spending increases that will stir regional unease.

The country's growing military clout has been accompanied by a more assertive tone in Chinese diplomacy, evident in spats last year with Japan and Southeast Asia over disputed islets, and in numerous rows with Washington.

Chinese parliamentary spokesman Li Zhaoxing said the defense budget would be 601.1 billion yuan ($91.5 billion) in 2011, from 532.1 billion yuan last year. The budget went up by just 7.5 percent in 2010, after long periods of double-digit hikes.

Many experts believe China's actual spending on the 2.3 million-strong People's Liberation Army (PLA) is far higher than what the government reports.

"What this budget figure suggests is that deep down, China's priorities haven't changed," said Rory Medcalf of Australian think tank the Lowy Institute.

"The PLA is an important and powerful force in decision-making and there is obviously a desire to signal to the Chinese public and Chinese nationalists that China is going to continue to get stronger."

That signal may prompt greater wariness from neighbors.

Japan said on Thursday it scrambled military jets this week after Chinese naval planes flew near disputed islands in the East China Sea, although the Chinese did not enter Japan's airspace.

The Philippines also demanded an explanation from China over an incident on Wednesday in a disputed area in the South China Sea, where it says two Chinese patrol boats threatened to ram a survey ship.

MILITARY BUILD-UP

Other nations are upgrading their forces in response to China's build-up, which included the first test flight of the J-20 stealth fighter jet in January, a show of muscle during a visit by U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

China could also launch its first aircraft carrier this year, according to Chinese military and political sources, a year earlier than U.S. military analysts had expected,

India increased annual defense spending by about 11.6 percent this week and is shopping for advanced fighter jets, transport aircraft, surveillance helicopters and submarines.

"For the United States, for Japan, for India, for all of China's neighbors, this is a burgeoning force whose capabilities are going to start seriously challenging everybody's security calculations," said Dean Cheng, China security expert at the Heritage Foundation in Washington.

Spokesman Li said the military spending rise was justified. China posed no threat to anyone, he added.

Every country has the right to spend as much as they think it is needed for there defence.... Be it China or India....

Last year, civil service salary 50% hike. My father's factory, workers salary 30% hike.
So soldiers is normal wage increases.

Where did you get the 30% salary figure? Salary for government employees (at least those in Beijing) has been frozen for nearly 5 years now.

Great news, i hope the defence budget continues to rise WITH prosperity in China.

Hopefully, China can increase its presence in the Indian Ocean, starting from Gawadar Port.
