LONDON: Scientists have found hints that dark matter, the cosmic scaffolding on which our universe is built, is being slowly erased, swallowed up by dark energy.

Cosmologists at the Universities of Portsmouth and Rome, argue the latest astronomical data favours a dark energy that grows as it interacts with dark matter, and this appears to be slowing the growth of structure in the cosmos. "If the dark energy is growing and dark matter is evaporating we will end up with a big, empty, boring universe with almost nothing in it," said Professor David Wands, Director of Portsmouth's Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation.

"Dark matter provides a framework for structures to grow in the Universe. The galaxies we see are built on that scaffolding and what we are seeing here, in these findings, suggests that dark matter is evaporating, slowing that growth of structure," said Wands. Cosmology underwent a paradigm shift in 1998 when researchers announced the rate at which the universe was expanding was accelerating, study said.

.
So Chanda mama nahin rahengey??:(

Dark matter is what holds galaxies together so, if it is weakening over time, it would imply that galaxies from the past (i.e faraway galaxies) should be denser than nearby galaxies.

Like every thing that reaches a peak and then starts collapsing, our universe too has spread enough that its time for it to shrink back.
But its intriguing how an accelerating growth of universe started to shrink in just 17years (in '98 the universe was found to be expanding according to the article.).
Is it possible that universe would show a reversal in its growth in such a small period of time??
I assumed it would take atleast a 500years or so to feel its shrink.

.
Its a theory. A man said the same in some documentary I watched a long time ago. Well, let them do more research because there must be something else which has not yet been discovered.

Its just a theory. There was a time when dark matter and dark energy was not discovered. Scientists were saying that universe is expanding and hence it will take more time for us to reach other galaxies one day. Now they are saying some other thing. Universe is so perfect that we may or may not discover the full potential of it in the existence of our species in this world. We live on a very tiny planet somewhere in this universe.

Right Faisyy!
We don't even know the potential of our own brain then how can we give perfect theories about the vastest thing known to man, universe??

Dark energy doesn't make things shrink; it makes matter fly apart, i.e. anti-gravity.

What they are saying is that everything will fly apart.

I said the universe might be shrinking if it has stopped expanding.
