Danish Tourist Gang-Raped in New Delhi

NEW DELHI—A 51-year old Danish tourist was gang-raped and robbed near a railway station in the Indian capital late Tuesday, police said, and the latest in a series of brutal sexual assaults in India that is focusing national and international attention on violence against women here.

Police on Wednesday said they had not made any arrests in connection to the attack, which authorities said happened after the woman got lost and stopped to ask directions when returning to her hotel from a museum visit. Indian law prohibits naming rape survivors without their permission. In her complaint, police said, the woman alleged that she was attacked by a group of eight men in central New Delhi.

A few men, who matched the description provided by the woman, were detained for interrogation early Wednesday, police said, but were later released after the woman said they weren't her attackers.

The December 2012 fatal gang rape of a 23-year-old student on a bus in Delhi led to mass protests and sparked an unprecedented reassessment of the treatment of women in the world's largest democracy, resulting in strengthened laws against sex crimes.

But attacks continue. More victims are coming forward to report such crimes, police and women's advocates say. The number of rape complaints filed in Delhi last year was more than double the number of such cases reported in 2012.

On Wednesday, police said the woman assaulted on Tuesday night had been treated at a local hospital and released. They added that she arrived in New Delhi on Monday after a visit to Agra, the home of the Taj Mahal, last week. Danish Ambassador to India, Freddy Svane, declined to comment on Wednesday.

Rapes of Indian women and foreign visitors have dented India's reputation abroad, tarnishing the image of the South Asian nation as a tourist destination.

International tourist arrivals to India last year grew at their slowest pace since the 2008 global economic downturn, rising just 3%, compared with a year earlier. That compares with a nearly 6% annual rise in arrivals in 2012 and a more than 9% jump in 2011.

Tourism is a major source of revenue for the Indian government, contributing about 6% to its economy, according to government for the year through Mar. 2012. A higher number of tourist arrivals would mean an increase in foreign exchange income for the county, which is reeling under a huge current-account deficit.

That doesnt seem to be the issue. The more these news reports emerge, it seems that the problem is exacerbated not by a "higher tendency of rape" in India as supposedly circulated but rather these organized rape gangs. It is a criminal network and a new social phenomenon that such targeted gangs are operating with impunity.

Danish woman gang-raped in Indian capital: police

NEW DELHI: A Danish woman was gang-raped in the Indian capital after getting lost and asking a group of men for directions, police and reports said Wednesday, the latest high-profile case of sexual assault against women in the country.

The 51-year-old woman was attacked late Tuesday at knife-point by the group of more than six men after losing her way to her hotel in a popular backpacker area of New Delhi, according to local media reports.

"She lost her way when this incident happened.

Currently, the concerned police team has identified suspects and is interrogating them. The investigation is on," Delhi police spokesman Rajan Bhagat told AFP.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told her friend about the attack when she eventually reached her hotel in Paharganj near the city´s central Connaught Place, Bhagat said. The woman had approached the group for directions near the New Delhi Railway Station after visiting a city museum, but they took her to a secluded spot before raping her at knifepoint, the Press Trust of India news agency reported citing unnamed police sources.

The Danish embassy did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment. According to The Times of India newspaper, the women had been in India for about a week, travelling first to Agra, the home of the Taj Mahal, before arriving in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The case comes weeks after a Polish woman was allegedly drugged and raped by a taxi driver while travelling with her two-year-old daughter to New Delhi.

Last month India marked the first anniversary of the death of a student who was gang-raped on a moving Delhi bus in an attack that sent shockwaves across the nation. The gang-rape triggered massive protests over the levels of violence against women, but in the last 12 months reported cases of local and foreign women being attacked have shot up significantly.

A judge last month sentenced three Nepalese men to 20 years in jail for the gang-rape of a US tourist in June in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh. Six men were sentenced to life in prison last July for the gang-rape and robbery of a 39-year-old Swiss woman cyclist who had been holidaying in the central state of Madhya Pradesh.

In all the famous tourist places all over the world such incidences happens for example in Canary Islands, Spain you can hear the news about stabbing and robbing very frequently. Therefore the solution is to see the problem areas and try to improve on it. Hope police and public becomes more vigil and prevent these things from happening.

The bold part was not required. The second part is important and requires immediate attention.

Well maybe they can add much more security to that area. Might not completely solve the problem, but at least it would help a lot.

Well not in Delhi. However if you do go into some remote pockets of central and north western India you will come across isolated villages where feudalistic behavior still run riot. The sex ratio in these parts have declined in the favor of men over the last few centuries due to rampant female foeticide and the remaining women are treated like clan chattel. While education and law and order can cure those evils, incidents happening in Delhi cannot.

One of the reasons why I respect middle eastern countries is because the penalties they impose on rape. Dismemberment of the penis or public lynching.

Time for us to stop being "Gandhian" and start looking for an "eye for an eye" approach when in comes down to rape or child abuse.

Enough is enough.
