CHANDIGARH: Around 100 families from Bhagana village of Hisar district converted to Islam on Saturday during a specially organized session at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Dalit leaders, spearheading the protest, claimed that they were forced to take the step as the government failed to address their complaints.

Dalit families from Bhagana have sitting on an agitation outside the mini secretariat in Hisar and Jantar Mantar since May 2012 to press for their demand of action against khap panchayat members for their castiest remarks and provoking upper caste residents of village against them.

Virender Bagoria, leader of Dalits, said the community had warned Hisar administration well in time before taking the extreme step. Bagoria said those who converted to Islam had undergone the process and recited Kalma. It was done under the supervision of maulavis from New Delhi under the monitoring of one Dr Abdul Razzaq, an office-bearer of a New Delhi-based Muslim organization.
"After consulting all families, we had organized this programme. Dr Razzaq had also visited Bhagana to know the mindset of villagers. Hence we fixed August 8 as the day for the conversion ceremony," said Bagoria.

Haryana's chief parliamentary secretary Kamal Gupta expressed ignorance about the development. "Conversion to Islam for the sake of faith is no issue at all. But conversion for getting their demands met amounts to blackmailing. This is not the right way. Can anyone change the head of the family if the issues raised before him go unaddressed," said Kamal Gupta.

Denied temple access, Dalit converts to Islam

A month ago, he called himself Shyam Singh. Now he declares himself “Azad” (liberated). The symbolic name not only sums up his situation, but is also his new identity.

Shyam, a member of the Dalit Valmiki community in Moga village of Meerut, converted to Islam two weeks ago.

A landless labourer, he didn’t convert only because the community was denied access to a prominent Valmiki temple, located in nearby Baghpat district, to perform the traditional puja.

He changed his faith also because of the “continuous threats and harassment” he and his fellow community members had to face from the local law and order officials after he persisted with his demand to have the right to perform puja at the temple.

The temple is controlled by the dominant Yadav community, and the priests had problems with the Valmikis performing puja. After their efforts to get equal rights failed, they announced that they would convert to Islam. Last week, the Meerut administration booked Shyam and his family for “disturbing peace and communal harmony” by persisting with their demand to perform puja at the temple and the announcement about converting to Islam.

In November last year, Shyam and his community members were told by the priest that they didn’t have any rights to perform puja.

‘What is the point in being a Hindu if I can’t enter a temple’

Since November last year, Shyam has petitioned the District Magistrates of Baghpat and Meerut, and the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. He also petitioned the Prime Minister’s Office.



“What is the point in being a Hindu and having this sacred thread around my wrist if I can’t even enter a temple and perform puja,” he argued.



While Shyam has converted to Islam, his fellow Valmikis, numbering over 100, are scared and don’t want to raise the issue. They are thinking of migrating to some other part of the State to escape official harassment.



Shyam himself now plans to migrate to Nepal.



Interestingly, the announcement of the conversion plan by Shyam and his fellow Dalits provoked immediate attention from right-wing Hindu outfits, which requested them not to convert.



“All of them wanted us not to convert to Islam, but none of them want us to get equal status among Hindus. This is how we have historically and traditionally been cheated,” said Shyam.



Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Baghpat, Rajendar Singh told The Hindu that the Valmikis were denied permission to perform the elaborate puja in their own style as it was a “new” religious tradition.

90-yr-old Dalit man burnt alive for trying to enter temple in UP

A 90-year-old Dalit man died after he was brutally attacked with an axe and set on fire for trying to enter a temple at Hamirpur in Uttar Pradesh, police said on Friday.

The victim, identified as Chimma, had gone to the Maidani Baba temple with his wife, son Durjan and brother on Wednesday evening. He was stopped from entering the temple by a man named Sanjay Tiwari.

When Chimma did not relent, Tiwari allegedly attacked him with an axe and then set him on fire.

The incident took place in the presence of several other worshippers in Bilgaon, a village on the boundary between Hamirpur and Jalaun districts located 140km from Kanpur.

Police said Tiwari had been arrested after he was nabbed by other people present in the area. They said he was drunk at the time of the incident.

An eyewitness said Tiwari had asked Chimma and several others not to enter the temple but they refused.

He said Tiwari became furious and attacked the Dalit man with an axe. While Chimma’s wife screamed for help, Tiwari doused the elderly man with kerosene and set him afire, the eyewitness said.

For us minorites independence or merger with Pakistan may be the only option. We were all semi educated and found a much better future in Pakistan. Muslims left in Indian occupied parts fail to recognize the bond they share with Pakistanis. We are one and the same and according to Azad Deccan Movement not a single muslim should and can call himself Indian. Indian directly means Hindutva and these Hindutvas have made it clear we have no place in a united India. That is why we Lucknowis, including people I know are vouching for independence.

Because they are of a lower caste. Often they are mistreated and occupy the lowest stratum of society along with the Muslims and in Orissa the Christians.

To be truthful the situation in Pakistan for hindus is bad, but many Dalits like Vajeesh Partab recognize that India has the same problems with intolerance which unfortunately do not get the attention of the world media. I myself am a Lucknowi from a town which is occupied by India. They killed people I knew.

The caste system at least does not apply in Pakistan. There is a class system though and I have spoken out against it.

Its simply that we make labourers and poorer people wait in the sun, give them food in different, usually steel utensils and other forms of discrimination. But in India it is infused in the fabric by the caste system while such problems are fading in Pakistan while BJP win means that these supposed to be inconsequential religious obstacles are returning.

To be truthful even in Indian occupied parts muslims seem to be adopting one of the sickest traditions praciticed in Indian occupied parts. My cousin, a muslim from Lucknow has a negative opinion of dalits. Don't touch them-don't give them the same utensils. that kind of thing. This is what I fear in a united India. Our culture disappearing in favor of Indian culture-for example the ban on cow slaughter. When we demand independence its about being rational and truthful and carefully weighing the benefits. Something slaves of India-the Indian muslims can't do.
