NEPRA approves tariff for 300MW coal-fired power plant in Gwadar​

ISLAMABAD- The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) approved the tariff for the 300MW imported coal-fired power plant in Gwadar on July 26.

CIHC Pak Power, a special-purpose vehicle of China Communications Construction Co., will execute the project at an approved cost of $358 million.

NEPRA approved a levelised tariff of 7.78 US cents, or Rs22.34, per unit for the project. The average tariff for the first thirteen years was determined as Rs23.74 per unit, while the tariff for the remaining duration of the 30-year contract period was determined as Rs18 per unit.

The federal government had approved the project in January this year. The 300MW imported coal-fired power plant is expected to serve as a sustainable source of electricity provision in the port city, which holds central importance in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) initiative.

The Gwadar Free Zone North, also known as Phase II, is set to commence its first formal operation within a month, marking a significant development in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Spanning an expansive area of 2,221 acres, the zone will enjoy tax exemptions and customs duty waivers for a period of 20 years. Agven Private Limited, an export fertilizer company, will be the first investor to establish an industry in the Gwadar North Free Zone, with plans to begin production in early August.

The company has acquired 10 acres of land and will initially rely on temporary arrangements for utilities provided by the China Overseas Port Holding Company.

The timely completion of the factory's construction will create job opportunities and boost local business activities. Hangeng, another export company, is also preparing to commence operations in the Gwadar Free Zone North, focusing on agriculture, livestock, and aloe vera cultivation.

Their initiatives are expected to generate direct and indirect employment for the local population and contribute to the development of Gwadar's industrial ecosystem.

GWADAR, - Pak-China Friendship Hospital in Gwadar is a state-of-the-art medical facility that not only provides free and high-quality treatment for the local residents but also offers employment opportunities to the coastal community.

The hospital extends an invitation to individuals driven by excellence and guided by vision to join its team, contributing to the advancement of this noble endeavor. The hospital has unveiled 37 vacancies across various departments, encompassing roles such as senior consultants, registrars, specialists, and junior technicians.

Gwadar Development Authority (GDA)’s Pak-China Friendship Hospital is a state-of-the-art health facility under China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), serving the people of Gwadar and Balochistan. Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN) operates tertiary care facilities at the hospital through a public-private partnership with the Government of Balochistan.

Departments offering employment opportunities are gynecology, pediatrics & neonatal medicine, and family medicine. This strategic focus highlights the hospital’s dedicated commitment to prioritizing the well-being of women and children, ensuring specialized care tailored to their unique needs.

According to the official website of CPEC, the hospital is planned on 68 acres of land. As per the plan, the hospital consists of medical blocks, nursing and paramedical institutes, a medical college, central laboratory, and other allied facilities. Before the currently offered jobs, the hospital had already created 35 jobs for the locals, as per the website.

E-gates to equip New Gwadar International Airport​

GWADAR - New Gwadar International Airport (NGIA) is soon to be equipped with Electronic Gates (E-gates) in line with international high-tech standards for the facilitation of passengers.

This is part of the project of Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) to make installation of e-gates across Pakistan in phases. Other airports that will have e-gates include Islamabad, Allama Iqbal, and Jinnah International Airport.

This project will be completed under the supervision of the Aviation Secretary and the Director-General of the Civil Aviation Authority (DGCAA).

Sources indicate that suggestions have also been obtained from different national institutions including the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), etc.

Meanwhile, tenders will be sought for the E-gate project.

The installation of E-gates will eliminate the hassle for travelers as they don’t need to wait in queue to get boarding pass and can obtain their boarding cards through the E-gate by scanning their passport and ticket.

The sources within CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) mentioned that the E-gate uses the data embedded in the Passport’s biometric chip.

This new technology will provide international travel convenience to passengers. Under this system, passengers undergo biometric authentication through facial, fingerprint, iris recognition or overall procedures, after which the gate will automatically open for the passenger.

US envoy visits CPEC-hub Gwadar​

GWADAR - United States Ambassador Donald Blome on Tuesday afternoon paid a visit to the port city of Gwadar which is a pivotal hub for China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and a vital component of Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a global economic corridor.

During his visit, Ambassador Blome inspected the Gwadar Port, which has seen development and expansion with Chinese assistance.

He also held discussions with Gwadar Port Authority Chairman Pasand Khan Buledi, focusing on potential development plans and Gwadar's role as a regional trans-shipment hub.
Additionally, they explored avenues for connecting Gwadar with Pakistan's largest export market, the United States.

Ambassador Blome engaged in dialogues with local political leaders, representatives from the Gwadar Chamber of Commerce, and leaders from both the government and the private sector.
He reiterated US support for Balochistan's development, encompassing economic growth, disaster relief, security, trade, and investment.

Ambassador Blome later visited Pakistan Naval West Command, where regional issues were discussed, emphasizing the continued partnership between the United States and Pakistan.
Meetings at the Gwadar Chamber of Commerce and Industry revolved around strategies to boost American trade and investment in various key sectors, including business, logistics, tourism, fisheries, and the blue economy. The objective was to foster Pakistan-led growth, create job opportunities in Balochistan, enhance technical skills, and promote bilateral trade.

Gwadar Port: 5 lakh tons of silt scooped out​

GWADAR, - Since the project's inception in March 2023, nearly 0.5 million (5 Lakh) tons of silt have been excavated from the bed of the navigational channel and anchorage area at Gwadar Port.

The project is set to be completed in 12 months. Dawood Baloch, the Gwadar Port Dredging Plan Project Director, communicated to Gwadar Pro that China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd (CHEC) has successfully removed 5 lakh tons of silt since the desilting process began in March.

This desilting process aims to restore the original depth of the navigational channel at Gwadar Port, allowing heavyweight ships to navigate efficiently. This restoration will ensure the seamless movement of various types of vessels, facilitating easy docking without interruptions. Another official from Gwadar Port Authority (GPA) stated that the plan is to reclaim the natural and original operational depth of 14.5 metres at Gwadar Port, at a cost of Rs 4.7 billion.

He expressed satisfaction with the operation's pace. The official added that the project, titled “The Maintenance Dredging of the Navigational Channel of Gwadar Port,” will be completed in 12 months per the agreement signed between CHEC and GPA.
