The Statue of Unity, to be the world’s tallest statue when completed, has made significant headway with its construction. Designed by Michael Graves Architecture & Design, the Statue of Unity will be 182-meters tall and depict Vallabhbhai “Sardar” Patel, the first deputy Prime Minister of India. Standing at almost twice the height of the Statue of Liberty, the Statue of Unity project will also consist of a hotel, memorial garden, visitor’s center and miles of roadways and bridges to connect the statue to the town of Kevadia, India.

The Statue of Unity is currently being built at the Sadhu-Bet Island, approximately 3.5 km south of Sardar Sarovar Dam in the Narmada district of Gujarat. The project is spearheaded by the current Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, to promote the significance of Sardar Patel’s achievements in India’s struggle for independence.

The statue sits on a base which will house a visitor’s center and a series of display halls dedicated to Sardar Patel and the history of India’s independence. A viewing area will also be located in the chest of the statue, providing panoramic views of the Narmada River and the Shoolpaneshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, whose lush green landscapes surround the site. Within the chest of the statue, visitors will also be able to view the structural detailing of the micro-panels that create the massive sculpture, giving them an indication of how the statue was assembled.

A significant portion of the project has been in the engineering needed to reinforce the rocky outcrop in the Narmada riverbed, where the statue is being erected. The reinforcement of the outcrop, the foundations, and the internal twin concrete cores have finally been completed, and work has commenced on the secondary structural steel scaffolding which will serve as the support system for the bronze panels of the statue. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2018.

Incredible photos reveal the world's tallest statue taking shape: £226million landmark that's twice as high as Lady Liberty is set to open in October

  • The Statue of Unity is currently being built on Sadhu Island in the western state of Gujarat in India
  • It is being built in honour of the late political and social leader Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel
  • The structure is set to be completed in October, with the foundation and central support pillars already laid

Incredible photos reveal the progress being made on what is set to be the world's highest statue.

The £226.9million Statue of Unity in western India will be 597 feet tall when it's finished in October - that's almost twice the height of the Statue of Liberty and nearly 100 feet higher than the current record holder, China's Spring Temple Buddha.

It's being built on Sadhu Island in the state of Gujarat, with the waters of the Narmada river surrounding it.

Images reveal that the foundations have been laid for the £226.9m structure along with central support pillars but there is still a bit of work to do before it takes on the form of the late political and social leader Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, whom it will honour

Millions of tons of cement and steel have been shuttled to the site and recycled iron was used for the statue's foundation.

Along with a visitor's centre, the Statue of Unity will have a viewing gallery at 501 feet, which can accommodate up to 200 visitors at a time. It will offer expansive views of the surrounding area.

Adjacent to the attraction will be a three-star 128-room hotel, with restaurant and conference facilities.

Some people have criticised the Statue of Unity project for being a waste of money. Vishal Shah wrote on YouTube in response to a promotional video: 'This is a ridiculous project, what would we achieve from it?'

The Statue of Unity will dwarf the Statue of Liberty and will be nearly 100 feet higher than the current record holder, the Spring Temple Buddha

Explaining the concept behind the giant idol, the Statue of Unity site notes: 'As a memorial to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the statue will not only remind every individual of our great nation's freedom struggle but will also inspire the people of our country to inculcate Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's visionary ideologies of unity, patriotism, inclusive growth and good governance.

'This monument will not just be a mute memorial like the rest, but a fully functional, purpose-serving tribute that will spur all round socio-economic development, in the form of better connectivity, healthcare and education infrastructure, research centre for agriculture development and various tribal development initiatives.'

While the Statue of Unity has been backed by ardent fans of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, some have criticised the project for being a waste of money.

Vishal Shah wrote on YouTube in response to a promotional video: 'This is ridiculous project, what would we achieve from it?'

While Surya Vanka mused: 'Besides being an enormous waste of resources, this is a rather tasteless and gaudy project.'

I'm not surprised, but only N.Korea and India are still doing this.
PS: government behavior.

Haha again. The farmers do it, not the government. The final result: it was asked to dismantle.

LOL.... nope.

The chinese govt. is still doing it. and doing it .... and doing it .

SO ?

Is that the magic date when all tall statues should be stop being built ?
No, the Chinese government rarely sets up huge statues(the height is above 10 meters. This number will not exceed 10). It's very rare. even before 80s, there were only a few giant statues in China built by the government. Your picture, in fact, it's all small. It's just the shooting angle that makes the illusion.
