  • amendments to be made in the constitution
  • will pass the National Assembly and the Senate by the 6th of January
  • all political parties backing it
  • cases to be reviewed by federal government before sending to military courts
Decision comes after this statement by the Army Chief
"special courts was not a ‘desire’ of the military but a 'need' of extraordinary times."

Gen Sharif was also quoted by ISPR as saying that the country would return to ‘original system’ when normalcy returns.

Pakistan amending constitution to start military courts

. . .
"Gen Sharif was also quoted by ISPR as saying that the country would return to ‘original system’ when normalcy returns."

Yes, elections in 90 days. Where have I heard that before? :D

I had probably heard the 90 days one straight from that horse Zia ul Haq's mouth on TV back in the 70's.

But let's not look for the worst in everything. Army has rightly/wrongly blamed the civilian agencies for the terrorists running lose. So let there be a chance for the Army to squash the menace of the terrorists without undue hindrance. The military courts are supposed to lapse after a certain time frame--two years? After that they will become UNCONSTITUIONAL.
I, for one, welcome the new political consensus as reached today!

Once the military courts are established, this parallel system will stay to the detriment of the country, like most things military that take on a life of their own. Granted, they may be needed for now, but we will all repent at leisure later for not bolstering the regular courts.

The amendment is being made by Parliament to cover military courts for two years. Any additional time would have to be authorized by the same Parliament.

I wish all the newspapers and channels and all other media outlets be closed for one month and after a month we will see how much people are hanged.

Complete media blackout in the country, no more so called third grade analysts spouting non-sense on TV nor any human rights lawyers.

Aik bar kaam muka do.

Just as was done in Swat.

The only problem with that approach is that the results are not durable.

Of course this measure is not meant to be a stand alone.

People need to see that executions or military courts are not to be understood as the only measure that is to be taken. It is just a cog in the machinery.

And I genuinely believe that now there is an awareness in the government that it needs to do it's part as well to make this whole process durable as you say.

Let's wait and see now.

That is precisely the problem. The Army by itself cannot do it all. And the rest of the government is more likely than not to still fail. Hence my apprehensions.

We'll just have to wait and see about what results will this whole process yield.

We've got the bill being presented to the Senate and voted on by Tuesday..then it'll need the Presidents signatre and it will be a part of the constitution.

Expect some things to happen.
