NEW DELHI: Raking up the 2002 post-Godhra riots issue, Congress on Friday appeared to compare Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi with 'Yamraj', the lord of death in Hindu mythology.

The party also said it feared the "consequences" if Modi was to become Prime Minister, a day after the chief minister made the strongest-ever indication of his prime ministerial ambitions.

"Had he intended to indicate Narendra Modi he would not have referred to somebody riding a horse but somebody riding a buffalo (Yama's vehicle) ... Rahulji has talked about somebody coming on a horse, he must be referring to a messiah," AICC spokesman Rashid Alvi told reporters.

He was replying to a question whether Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was referring to Modi when he said in his CII speech on Thursday that no one person can come charging on horseback and solve all the country's problems.

The invoking of 'Yamraj' barb brings back the memories of " merchant of death" used by Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the campaign during Gujarat assembly elections in 2007, which was believed to have boomeranged on the party. In subsequent elections, the party avoided references to the riots.

Ridiculing Modi's comments on Thursday about "repaying the debt" to nation, seen as his first-ever admission of his prime ministerial ambitions, Alvi said "We are frightened if he wants to pay back the debt to Delhi (nation) in the same manner in which he has paid the debt to the soil of Gujarat."

On Thursday Modi had said it was the duty of every child to repay the debt he owes to "Mother India".

Striking a similar note, information and broadcasting minister Manish Tewari said, he often worried about Modi's statements and hoped he does not not do in the rest of India what "he did" in Gujarat in 2002.

"As someone who believes in the idea of India, who believes in the plurality of Indian ethos, who is committed to the founding values of the Indian Constitution, I often worry about the statements of the Gujarat chief minister.

"I hope he doesn't want to do in the rest of India what he did in Gujarat in 2002."

On questions related to the United States' stance of not granting a visa to Modi, Tewari said he wondered why there was an obsession related to a foreign visa.

Mocking at Modi's remarks on repaying debt, Alvi said that he can do it while working in a village also.

He went on to quote a Ghalib couplet 'haazaron khawhishen aisi, ke har khwahish pe dum nikle' (There are thousands of wishes and in pursuit of each, life could be consumed).

"If somebody thinks the debt of the nation can be paid by only coming to Delhi, this is that person's thinking. People have various desires," he added.

Congress links Modi to death again, calls him Yamraj now - The Times of India

it seems like suddenly everything is funny or am i high ???

Have they forgot how "Maut ka Saudagar " bounced badly

When you say "Yamraj" do you mean "King Yama" (阎王)?

He is the God of death in East Asia as well. Specifically he is the King of the Underworld/Hell.

Hypocrisy at best coming from a party which conducted the biggest genocide in inpedendent India's history.

In 2007 they called him 'Merchant of Death' and he swept to power. Looks like history is going to repeat itself.

When you say "Yamraj" do you mean "King Yama" (阎王)?

He is the same. Never knew that he is known in East Asia as well.

What is the matter with these people ?

Sure MODI was responsible for the Murder of 3000+ innocent Indian Citizens.

But Modi did recently APOLOGIZE for those Murders.

The guy said he was SORRY. Isn't it enough ?

What do you guys want from Him.

Spread as much hatred against him as you can because the more you will hate him the more we Indian will Trust him...

Hindu Diety Chitragupta: Angelic Record Keeper

Hindus believe that a deity named Chitragupta is in charge of recording all the deeds -- both good and bad -- that people perform during their lifetimes. Chitragupta is an angelic being called a deva , and he works for the Hindu god of death , Yama (who is also sometimes known as Dharam Raja) writing down people's actions in the Akashic records (a mystical code of everything that has ever happened in the universe).
Chitragupta's name is similar to the names of the two angels in Sikhism who record people's deeds during their lifetimes: Chitar and Gupat (whose alternate names are Chitra and Gupta, which together form Chitragupta's name).
Recording Every Action
Chitragupta notices and records absolutely everything a person chooses to do during his or her lifetime, believers say.
"Chitragupta knows all of the deeds and behaviors of each individual on Earth," writes Constance Victoria Briggs in her book Encyclopedia of the Unseen World: The Ultimate Guide to Apparitions, Death Bed Visions, Mediums,Shadow People, Wandering Spirits, and Much, Much More .
In his book Fasts and Festivals of India , Manish Verma writes that, "Chitra Gupta literally means 'hidden picture' and it is he who presents a true picture of our actions after death."
Reviewing the Records for Judgment
Yama (Dharam Raja) carefully reviews the records that Chitragupta has kept on every person, and then uses the recorded information about each person's actions to decide how to reincarnate that person in the next life, say believers.
"In ancient Indian mythology, Chitra Gupta is the scribe who records all actions of every human being," writes Kamaljeet Singh Dogra in his book Prayer at Dawn . "These records are reviewed by Dharam Raja for judging the soul after it migratesto the next world after death."
Briggs writes in Encyclopedia of the Unseen World that Yama and his helpers take the souls ofpeople who have just died to a place called Yamalok to examine them, "and his or her good and bad acts are recorded and kept by the god Chitragupta (the keeper of records of humanity).... From these records, Yama decides where the person will go in his or her next incarnation."

In Fasts and Festivals of India , Verma writes: "It is Chitra Gupta who maintains the accounts of ourgood and bad actions in this world, and we are rewarded or punished accordingly in the afterlife . The good and evil deeds are reckoned and judgment passed by Yama. The good are then sent to one of the higher Lokas or worlds, and thesinful are sent to hell to receive their deserts."
Chaitra Purnima Festival
During the full moon in either March or April, people in India celebrate a festival called Chaitra Purnima to honor Chitragupta and try to motivatehim to show them grace when recording the details of their lives, believers say.
In their book Encyclopedia of Hinduism , Constance A. Jones and James D. Ryan write that people celebrate Chaitra Purnima "to recognize Chitragupta, assistant to the god of death Yama. It is thought that if he is honored while people are alive he may be more lenient with them afterdeath."

Neither he was responsible neither the number is any where close to 3000 and neither did he apologized

Reminds me of a Hindi proverb " the thief calling the police a thief" or is it something else?

The other name for Yamaraj is Dharmaraj or Yamadharmaraj - meaning (God of justice).

Modi is Dharmaraj is something I am willing to believe.

Thank you congress :P

So wait, does that mean "King of Dharma"?

Dharma as in the Law of the Universe/Nature? (That's what it means in Buddhism anyway).

Well to put it exactly its is Justice..Justice transalates roughly to Dharma

He is named so because he is the one who punishes/rewards the souls after they are dead according to their pava/punya (sin/good deeds)

Law = Justice, so about the same. Dharma in Buddhism means the Law of the Universe (which is necessary in order to maintain Justice, order and harmony), and it also means correctly living your life according to this Natural order.

He is named so because he is the one who punishes the souls after they are dead according to their pava/punya (sin/good deeds)

That makes sense to me. King Yama has exactly the same role in Chinese mythology.
