Amtrak train derails in Washington state onto Interstate 5; at least 6 dead

By Katherine Lam, Travis Fedschun | Fox News

An inaugural ride on a new line meant to speed train service in Washington state turned deadly Monday after an Amtrak train carrying more than 80 people derailed outside of Tacoma — causing several train cars to tumble from a highway overpass and killing at least six people, officials said.

At least 50 people were taken to four local hospitals, officials said. At least two people are in critical condition, while 11 other people are seriously injured, hospital officials told The Associated Press. At least one person was taken into surgery.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency after Amtrak train 501 derailed around 7:30 a.m. along Interstate 5 as it was leaving the new Tacoma station. A U.S. official told The Associated Press the death toll is expected to rise and track obstruction is being investigated as a possible cause of the derailment.

The train was traveling southbound from Seattle when it derailed. Washington State Trooper Brooke Bova said 12 train cars and two engines jumped the tracks. Thirteen total cars were derailed.

Police previously said several cars were struck by the Amtrak train cars, injuring multiple drivers on the highway. No motorists’ deaths were reported, according to Pierce County officials.

Amtrak said 77 passengers and seven crew members were on board the train, part of its "Cascades" service from Seattle to Portland, Ore. It received reports of passengers and crew members injured that were taken to the hospital. Service for two Amtrak Cascades trains were canceled.

A highway camera showed at least one train car toppled onto the road, causing a traffic jam. Photos tweeted by Washington State Patrol Public Information Officer Brooke Bova showed one detached and smashed on the ground. Another car was dangling from the overpass.

Chris Karnes, who was on the train — three or four cars back from the front — told The Associated Press: "I'm not sure what got hit. I'm not sure what happened."

Bova told Fox News' "Happening Now" that people are advised to avoid Interstate 5 and that clearing the area will be an “all day” process.

Kaines, the chair of Pierce Transit's advisory board, said on Twitter, "The train has derailed. Emergency crews are on the scene. Massive damage. People are hurt." He said the train appeared to have hit a truck, adding that the car was "destroyed."

The train was going 81.1 mph moments before the derailment, according to transitdocs.com, a website that maps Amtrak train locations and speeds using data from the railroad's train tracker app.

The maximum speed along the stretch of track, known as Point Defiance Bypass, is 79 mph, according to information about the project posted online by the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The Washington State Department of Transportation said that drivers should expect long delays and avoid the area. Southbound Interstate 5 near DuPont was closed shortly after the derailment after traffic backed up for miles.

Monday was the first day of schedule changes to include two new round trips between Seattle and Portland, according to the Amtrak website. Amtrak train 501 is part of the new route running between Portland and Seattle daily. The Washington Department of Transportation spent $180.7 million project on passenger train improvement project, which sped up service by removing passenger trains from a route along Puget Sound that's bogged down by curves, single-track tunnels and freight traffic.

Monday's accident came just two weeks after Lakewood mayor Don Anderson made a chilling comment saying it was only a matter of time a deadly derailment will occur, according to KOMO News.

He advocated for grade separations to protect people from trains.

"Come back when there is that accident, and try to justify not putting in those safety enhancements, or you can go back now and advocate for the money to do it, because this project was never needed and endangers our citizens,” Anderson said at the time.

The southbound lanes of Interstate 5, which see about 60,000 vehicles per day, are expected to be closed for "an extended period," according to the WSDOT.

The derailment was Amtrak's 26th within the U.S. since 2014, and the fourth in the state of Washington since 2014.

Chinese firm wins work on U.S. project

Adding third track to Long Island Rail Road a high-profile contract

A Chinese construction company is among those that will work on a $1.81 billion project for new third track on the main line of New York's Long Island Rail Road, the U.S.' busiest regional rail system.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority, which oversees the railroad, approved a contract on Dec. 13 with 3rd Track Constructors for the 9.8 miles of new track for the rail system east of New York City.

CCA Civil Inc, a unit of China Construction America, is one of several companies that have joined 3rd Track Constructors on the project. The others are Dragados U.S.A Inc, John P. Picone Inc and Halmar International LLC.

China Construction is a unit of China State Construction Engineering Corp, the world's largest investment and construction group by revenue. CCA has completed commercial and government projects in the U.S., such as the Pulaski Skyway in New Jersey, the Yankee Stadium subway station in New York City and the Staten Island Expressway, which connects Staten Island to both Brooklyn and New Jersey.

Founded in 1985 and based in Jersey City, New Jersey, CCA has around 2,000 employees, 98 percent of whom are U.S. hires. The company provides services such as construction management, general contracting and public-private partnership assistance for public and private clients.

As one of the top three builders in New York and South Florida, the Chinese company also has constructed high-rises in the U.S., including Madison Square Park Tower in Manhattan and the One Thousand Museum luxury condominium building in downtown Miami.

"The localization strategy has played an important role in gaining a favorable impression from U.S. society," Yuan Ning, president of CCA, said in November.

The new track between the Floral Park and Hicksville stations will be built on existing LIRR property and is part of the rail system's expansion project, which also includes eliminating seven grade crossings, the renovation of several stations and six new parking garages. Construction is expected to begin next year and take up to four years.

The segment of the railway for the new track serves more than 250 trains on a typical weekday and is used by 40 percent of LIRR riders.

Don't worry, here comes the Chinese to fix things up for the incompetent Americans. Get ready your purse as we are gonna collect those millions . I know the old crumbling infrastructure in America are decaying, heck i don't know what the US government is doing with those tax payers' money, seems to me only the ruling class are pocketing those green back. But hey you don't hear us complaining, those Yankee tax money are filling our pockets too.

I wish Trump delivers on his promise of spending $1 trillion on infra. That would generate lots of opportunities for China.

But I do not believe that promise anymore. Trump has thrown the towel under the pressure of real power holders.

With so much militarization going on, where the hell Trump find the money. Make Mexicans also pay for Seattle metro after the WallTM?

As long the US military stays numero uno, Trump's promise "we are gonna win" will come true. Let the infra crumb, no big deal. There's even this hook worm epidemic in USA going on, a third world decease. HAs USA become a 3rd World by now?

I have to say train derailment happens too frequently in USA.
But people like @Hamartia Antidote are obsessed with things that happened like more than 5 years ago.
Such mentality is the very reason that American infrastructure is collapsing in an unpresidented speed.

America's railway patronage is so tiny
but in the meantime having one of the biggest railway accident fatalities per year.
Those people never think about any viable solution.
Their solution is probably more immoral wars.

They need to come up with a solution about how to build better infra than Sub-Sahara Africa.

According to some UN experts, actually, yes, some part so of the US may be described as 3rd world, which surprising.

It is normal for a developing country to have poverty and other issues, but, for an advanced country that has begun its industrialization some 70 years before China, it is abnormal.

But people like @Hamartia Antidote are obsessed with things that happened like more than 5 years ago.

They probably have no idea how long 5 years is for a country like China that experiences explosive growth and unprecedented social-economic changes.

For many rigid Western countries, 5 years probably means little for meaningful change in conditions. 5 years basically means yet another boring election cycle: Rinse and repeat. Mediocrity.

Wow look at that, no accidents since 2011 (which was the first time China deployed HSR) and before that not so many accidents either for a super huge population like China depending on trains for travel.

Since 2011, no incident involving passengers injured or dead inside a train.
We have trains where coins can be erected for minutes.....

I think that's why America gave the project to a Chinese company for building their rail road. We have excellent reputation. Americans just can't do it themselves

I know many Americans who visited China were all in awe of China's HSR. They were asking themselves why America can't build these like China.
Nearly 20 subways will open this month......
Tens of new expressways have been open this year.....
