What's new

Commonwealth citizens can join British armed forces now

They should just increase the number of Gurkha recruits if their only concern is less people applying for armed forces..but on the contrary, they are downsizing the Gurkha regiments. I think they also want these soldiers to be ambassador of British interest in their home country and that's why recruiting from all of the commonwealth.
Perhaps they do not want a single community or nationality forming a majority group and turn their own white people into a minority. It is shame that they can't find 8000 people to serve in their military out 80 million population. What happens to the far-right EDL racists who think themselves as the saviours of UK...
Also, it is strange that it is not open for European citizens..why? do they not trust them. I smell the rat here.. may be these soldiers will be sent back to their countries as agents after the job.

Common wealth idea is interesting concept , loose ties to British Empire of old which can come together at time of future need, allowing foreign soldiers to Join your main force quite a new concept

  • Seems like a Mercenary force from poor nations exploiting poverty

Now not sure how this works but ..... surprised as this ruling

Specially since global environment is quite calm

I think Pak army should allow overseas Pakistanis to join their ranks. They could bring expertise in areas such as infortmation technology/ linguistics / engineering. If we can take their money in overseas remittances, we should allow them a chance too if they want to serve. Israel is a good example of this

Would be really interested to hear views from fellow Pakistanis

Nobody overseas is stupid enough to join British armed forces.

1. The pay is rubbish.
2. The army has a culture of racism, bullying and rape (for females)
3. They spend most of their time killing Muslims

Will the slaves get acknowledgement?

Last time they were used as cannon fodder from East all the way to the Horn of Africa.
Some died while marching and dust storms lead others astray. They were left at the mercy of the elements and for a fact that British officers planned their massacre to sometimes escape situations of discomfort while other times to over heat the german machine guns.
When there was lull in the fighting, these slaves oh i mean liberators of truth worked till they would fall dead.

Also these people ended the khilafa of the ottomons and gave jews the land which they call israel now.

now thats way too harsh. people are gonna get all sensitive about it. i should not post this. oh wait ooasdoadsdasdad

How about NO

there are some families in Pakistan who take great pride in serving under the british.

reminds me of those stories from the african tribe when the white man first encountered them, they fell in prostration thinking that gods avatar is here.

Yeah,I pretty much doubt those from the commonwealth willing to join the British army will ever plan to go back to their homelands. They're going to serve, probably get the British citizenship, establish themselves there, bring their family...

Foreign nationals living abroad will be allowed to join Britain's Armed Forces, the government is set to announce.

Currently, citizens from Commonwealth countries can only join if they have lived in the UK for five years.

But in a bid to recruit more servicemen and women to the Army, Navy and Air Force, the Ministry of Defence is lifting this rule.

The Armed Forces is short of 8,200 soldiers, sailors and air personnel, a report found earlier this year.

It is the worst shortage since 2010, said the independent government watchdog, the National Audit Office.

Ministers are expected to announce the change to recruitment rules on Monday.

It means people from Commonwealth countries - including India, Australia, Kenya, Fiji and Sri Lanka - will be considered for roles, even if they have never lived in Britain.

The government already allows 200 Commonwealth citizens who have not met the requirement of living in the UK for five years to apply for a limited number of jobs every year. They introduced the rule in 2016.

Now, that cap of 200 will be lifted.

It is hoped the changes will recruit an extra 1,350 people every year.

According to the Daily Telegraph, which first published details of the plan in Monday's paper, the Air Force and Navy will begin recruiting immediately and the Army will open applications early next year.

Applications from citizens of countries outside the Commonwealth will not be accepted, the paper adds. Citizens of Ireland and also Gurkhas from Nepal can already join because of special rules.

Recruitment crisis
April's National Audit Office report also said there were "much larger shortfalls" in the number of engineers, pilots and intelligence analysts.

It said the Armed Forces were involved in 25 operations worldwide in 2016/17 - and the Air Force is undertaking more missions than it has for a quarter of a century.

And a Conservative MP's report in July 2017 on the state of Army recruitment warned that the Armed Forces were "hollowing out" due to recruitment issues.

Mark Francois, who spent a year meeting with MoD officials as well as military personnel, said there was a "perfect storm" of high employment rates and an ageing population with fewer people of military age.

An increase in obesity and also a rising proportion of black, Asian and minority ethnic people - who he said have until now been less likely to apply for military service - are also factors, he added.

He made many recommendations - including attracting more black, Asian and minority ethnic recruits and women.

Last month, it was announced that women were now allowed to apply for all roles in the British military for the first time in history.

In the government's Budget, Chancellor Philip Hammond announced an extra £1bn of defence spending.

If implemented properly, large swathes of English speaking Indians may possibly join the British armed forces, could this be a threat of any sort to Pakistan? Any implications ?

Why Pakistan is not included??
