Comac is working toward an internal target to deliver its first ARJ21-700 to launch customer Chengdu Airlines on 28 November.

The date holds significance for the Chinese airframer since it marks the day the indigenous regional jet took its first flight back in 2008, the programme’s vice chief designer Zhao Keliang tells Flightglobal in an interview in Shanghai.

The plan is for Comac to deliver two regional jets to Chengdu Airlines this year, which will then be put into commercial passenger service next February.

Zhao says Comac is still working on making changes to the ARJ21 despite receiving type certification from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) last December. He adds that while these issues do not relate to the safety of the aircraft, they could affect the operational efficiency of the jet.

Examples include changes that need to be made to improve how the aircraft’s anti-icing system functions in the event of a single-engine operation, as well as to its warning system to help enhance pilots’ operational awareness and help them better anticipate possible flying situations.

The airframer has also taken into account requests from the airline such as smoothing out sharp edges in the interior of the aircraft, says Zhao.

Comac has yet to receive production certification for the programme, which means it needs to get individual certification for aircraft 105 and 106, which are slated for Chengdu Airlines. The firm is working toward an end-2016 target to achieve production certification for the type.

Sources add that attaining western certification for the regional jet is no longer a priority for the airframer, despite the US Federal Aviation Administration's shadow certification with the CAAC to determine its certification capability.

Chengdu Airlines, a subsidiary of Comac and all-Airbus operator, has meanwhile been preparing to add the type to its operations. Its pilots have been training with Comac's pilots in Chengdu, while its maintenance personnel undergo training at the manufacturer’s customer service and after support centre in Shanghai.

China's COMAC delivers first ARJ21 jet plane to domestic airline

Nov 29 State planemaker Commercial Aircraft Corp of China (COMAC) said on Sunday it has delivered the first ARJ21 jet to domestic low-cost carrier Chengdu Airlines, calling it a big breakthrough in China's efforts to develop its domestic jet plane design and manufacturing capabilities.

China is keen to develop a successful commercial aircraft to rival Boeing and Airbus. But it has been held back by inexperience, a shortage of local aerospace design and engineering talent, as well as a lack of home-grown companies with the technology to help drive the project.

The ARJ21, China's first locally built regional jet, is designed to compete against Brazil's Embraer SA and Canada's Bombardier Inc.

The aircraft, which seats about 90 passengers, was given permission to fly domestically by China's civil aviation regulators at the end of last year following years of delays due to technological problems.

It has not yet been granted certification by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which will limit its access to overseas markets.

COMAC said in September it had signed a preliminary deal with ICBC Leasing to supply 10 ARJ21 jets and 10 of its C919 models to Thai airline City Airways. (Reporting by Fang Yan and David Stanway; Editing by Muralikumar Anantharaman)

Congratulations China. The regional jet market is really heating up with arrival of Mitsubishi, Japan and COMAC, China. Competition is always good and may be soon I can be flying a cheaper regional business jet than Piaggio Evo. This also marks the development of Asian aerospace industry.

The 70-90 seat MRJ will be a competitor to the medium range jets produced by Canada’s Bombardier and Brazil’s Embraer.

the 158-174 passenger capacity C919 will compete with the flagship aircraft of the world industry leaders–the Boeing 737 and the Airbus A320. Its standard range is 4075 kilometers, extendible to 5555 kilometers.

They don't belong to the same category.

The Mitsubishi was design much later. Anyhow, it is about the color scheme which make appearance of Mitsubishi more "cleaner". Perhaps, our fascination with red is going too far.

Looks good to me :enjoy:

Congrats to our Chinese friends, building a Aircraft of this size is no small deal :china:

. . . .
Isn't this a shared platform with Bombardier - 100??
This aircraft fill the regional sector which can really transform air travel in Pakistan..as a worthy replacement for smaller inter-city routes..
