Visakhapatnam, Jan 19 (PTI)Indian Coast Guard will induct 250 ships and 100 aircraft over the next five years, a top official said today. Talking to reporters here, Commander Coast Guard Region(East),Inspector General, Satya Prakash Sharma said that the orders for 150 ships have already been placed. Stating that Coast Guard was in the forefront in safeguarding the maritime interests of the country, he said the new ships would boost its capability in the eastern region. Presently, Coast Guard has 60 ships and 49 aircraft. He also informed that six new coast guard stations, one each in Kolkata and Odisha, two each in Andhra Pradesh and Pondicherry would be established soon. Meanwhile, three of its ships, Vikram, Chandbibi and Ramadevi were decommissioned today with full military honours.

Indian Coast Guard Ships C-150 and C-151 were commissioned by Vice Admiral Anil Chopra, Director General Coast Guard at an impressive ceremony in Kochi today.

The two ships are the 8th and 9th of the 11 Interceptor Boat (IB) class, designed and built indigenously by M/s ABG Shipyard, Surat. They are fitted with ultra modern navigational and communication equipment, and will be deployed for enhancing the close coast surveillance capability of Indian Coast Guard.

The 28 metre ships displace 90 tons each, and have an endurance of 500 nautical miles with an economical speed of 25 knots. They can achieve a maximum speed of 45 knots for responding to urgent calls at sea, and are equipped with advanced navigational and communication equipment. In addition to small arms, the IBs are fitted with 12.7 mm ‘Prahari’ Heavy Machine Gun (HMG).

By the end of 2012, the Indian Coast Guard is on track to operate:

- 42 Coast Guard Stations

- 5 Coast Guard Air Stations

- 10 Coast Guard Air Enclaves
