Chinook & Apache final, signatures likely in FY14

Boeing Defense is closely monitoring two major deals with the Indian Air Force that have reached finality in negotiations, though contract signature could slip into the next financial year, possibly under a new government post the national elections.

Air Force deals for 22 AH-64D Block III Apache attack helicopters and CH-47F Chinook heavy-lift helicopters are all but ready to be signed (price negotiations could be fully complete by the middle of February), though the contracting atmosphere has slowed down as a result of national election season in the country and its attendant constraints. The previous IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal N.A.K. Browne had hoped to complete the crucial acquisitions in his tenure, though delays in late 2013, including the tragic demise of MoD Acquisition Manager Arun Bal, led to a significant limbo period before things continued....

can anyone please explain why the f*** do we need the apaches and that too only 22 of them. attack choppers are a overhyped and overused species. even if we do need them we have our home made ones as well LCA , Rudra. etc. the only good that could have come from this deal was that if we could reverse engineer them.

We already developing an Light attack Helicopter but that is not even close to Apache which is world's best at it's class.
We'll make additional Apaches. We don't reverse engine or Copy paste like Chinese do, if you gonna do that then no one is going to give you Western tech or their toys

If we dont have the reverse engineering capability.we need to hire some experts from northern neighbors. Apaches are the best in its class of weaponry,agile and extremely lethal. It can rip off any target on its duty. well LCH,Rudra are light class when we compared with Apache.

firstly you meant to say LCH and not LCA
Apaches and LCH/Rudra do not fall in the same catagory. Apaches are heavy,more capable and are proven tech than LCH.Also if things go as per my guess,Apache may land with IAF and IA may settle for LCH.

But I too am confused with it's role in IAF. Attack Helicopters seem more useful in fighting insurgencies than against conventional armies.

Whether with IA or IAF attack helis will be a integral part in our conventional wars. kargil war and other war games we had are proof for it.

Not at all, Apaches were meant primarily as tank busters, to decimate massed Soviet armoured formations rolling into western Europe. In our case, they will be used both in the anti armour, as well as airborne artillery role.

Whether they are absolutely essential for India, I do not know. But they can definitely be useful in convetional war, and not for counter insurgency.

That's a myth, there is nothing like a weight category for attack helicopters, only helicopters that were converted to the attack role, like Rudra, or armed Black Hawks and helicopters that were designed and developed for the attack role, which includes the Apache just as the LCH. The fact that the Apache is heavier is not a reason that it's more capable than the LCH, but the lack of a mast mounted radar, or the fact that the stub wings of LCH can carry "JUST" 2 x missiles less in anti tank role, while both would carry the same standard load of 2 x ATGM quad launchers and 2 x rocket pods.

They will also include role of UAV and UCAV Control + Coordination.

Only if we can add a custom data link that is compatible to our UAVs. Most of the block 3 upgrades are software and avionics additions based on the requirements of US / NATO forces, that doesn't mean they automatically would be useful for India too.
