it is definited that the new AMRAAM isn't sd10a.

. .
Doesn't look like SD missile. Different fins.

SD is export designation for PL-12 AAM.

very likely

4. PAF is impressed with the performance of SD-10s and confirms that the missile is comparable to the AMRAAM-Cs.

5. An improved SD-10s, designated here as SD-10Bs with improved range, seeker, new motor and better seeker has been tested in China on the FC-1. These missiles are marginally lighter than the first generation and are in the same standard as the best Western BVR AAMs.

The weight of the SD-10Bs still remains slightly greater than the AMRAAM Cs but this is not an issue anymore because the performance is equal or superior. The missiles displayed in Zhuhai were not the new generation SD-10Bs but the earlier model.

smaller fins and lighter weight might indicate this BVRAAM will be used by chinese 5th gen fighters`as they need to reduce the size in order to fit as more missils as possible in weapon bays`

.
Photos of this missiles on CJDBY and sina have been deleted, looks like it is still a classified project.

Correction: I found the photo on sina.com. but CJDBY photos are not accessible.

. .
Nothing surprising. There are four variants of the PL-12 missile:
- PL-12A
- PL-12B: with improved guidance system
- PL-12C: with foldable fins for internal carriage by 5th generation fighters
- PL-12B: with belly ramjet intake for even longer range attacks, similar to PL-21

The PL-12A is generally believed to be in the class of the AIM-120D and the rest of the PL-12 family is considered generally superior to the AIM-120 family.

One of the things which China has a technological advantage over the US is in the field of guided missiles.

Way too optimistic. Peishen once said PL-12A is only equal to AIM-120B, but they do have some interesting stuff coming up.

And I was talking mostly about the "interesting stuff coming up".

And remember, the PL-12A was thought to have only 70 km of effective when only a few years later the PLA confirmed that it has over 100+ km of effective range. Range isn't everything, but it demonstrates that what we know of the PL-12A may change any time. Apparently some Chinese claims state that the basic PL-12A variant is "superior to the AIM-120A/B but slightly inferior to the AIM-120C".

It was reported that 607 Institute has been developing a new activing radar homing AAM comparable to American AIM-120D (dubbed PL-15?). Recent photos showed a new type of missile being tested onboard a J-11B fighter. Compared to PL-12 of the same class, the missile features stablizing fins and tailfins with reduced wingspans, suggesting its design is optimized for internal carriage by the 4th generation fighter such as J-20. PL-1X may also features improved guidance system (including duplex datalink and new active/passive dual mode seeker with enhanced ECCM capability) as well as a bigger motor which gives it a longer range (~100km?). There was a speculation that PL-1X is actually a new anti-radiation AGM comparable to American HARM, but this has yet to be confirmed.

Why are we jumping to the conclusion that it's a new family of missiles so fast? It could very well be part of the PL-12 family.

All fingers pointing towards SD-10B........

LETRI “PL-13” “Sino-Meteor”

In 2008 an image appeared on the Chinese internet showing a solid ramjet powered AAM evidently based on the existing PL-12 design. The status of this design is not clear. Conceptually it is closest to the MBDA Meteor AAM planned for the Royal Air Force.

If such a missile is in development it would likely be similar in performance to the Meteor, which has exceptionally high endgame lethality due to the increased sustained G capability arising from persistent engine thrust, compared to conventional single and dual pulse rocket AAMs.

China's indigenous equivalent to the AMRAAM is the PL-12/SD-10, claimed to use the seeker and other components from the Russian R-77 AMRAAM-ski. Credited with competitive performance against the AMRAAM, the PL-12 is expected to be deployed on the Su-27, Su-30, J-10 (image © 2009, Zhenguan Studio).

While some confusion remains about designations, most sources identify the SD-10 and PL-12 as the same missile, China's equivalent to the AMRAAM. This weapon is in sizing and configuration very similar to the AIM-120A, but employs a unique tail planform. Equipped with an active radar seeker, and datalink aided inertial midcourse guidance, this missile is a credible player against the AMRAAM and R-77 series. The indigenous AMR-1 active seeker is identified with the PL-12, and numerous reports exist claiming that it is a derivative of the Russian Agat 9B-1348E seeker package used in the R-77 series. The missile is widely credited with superior range performance to the AIM-120A-C variants.
The production status of the PL-12 is unclear, but the missile has been claimed as a future weapon for the indigenous J-10 fighter and the Su-27SK and Su-30, replacing imported R-77s on the latter. The missile has been photographed on the J-10A, J-10S and J-11B.
A variant with an all aspect infrared seeker may exist, analogous to Russian heatseeking variants of the R-27 / AA-10 Alamo and R-77 / AA-12 Adder.
There is little doubt that the PL-12 closes most of the technology gap between Chinese built BVR missiles, and in service Western BVR missiles.
