It is reported that China has fully independently developed a world class medium range Active Radar Homing (ARH) air to air missile SD-10. As a hot trend in modern air combat, medium range air to air missiles have gone beyond the role and status of traditional short-range combat missiles, and major air powers have raced to develop this advanced type of missile. The ARH SD-10 medium range air to air missile development started in the mid-1980s, and is able to "Fire and Forget".
The Chinese-made SD-10 BVR air to air missile is in terms of normal aerodynamic layout, 3.9 meters (12.2 feet) in length and 199 kilograms (438 pounds) in weight, with a top speed of over 4,000 kilometers per hour, a maximum range of 70 km, a maximum overload of 38G, and a maximum altitude is 21 km (62,000 feet); able to all-aspect-attack and down-attack.
Its seven recent test firings all hit the targets.
Bearing a high-effect antipersonnel rod warhead, the SD-10 provides a brilliant damage effect on all sizes of targets such as fighters and bombers. In addition, due to its strong anti-jamming capability, SD-10's effective against several forms of electronic interference, basically covering the current common ways of electronic interference. Experts believe that domestic SD-10's performance has surpassed the U.S. AIM-120A/B, Russian R-77 and the French MICA (Missile d'Interception et de Combat Aerien), etc., and close to the AIM-120C.
SD-10's highly versatile, and can be mounted in a variety of advanced fighter such as the FC-1 Xiaolong fighter which has recently performed another successful test flight.
China is still working hard to increase its fighting efficiency and use by improving its range up to 100 Km and using better electronic components to improve guidance accuracy. In the future it may be developed into ground to air and sea to air; equipped on highly mobile vehicles and warships to perform as a short-range air defense weapon.
Foreign media indicated that the U.S. "AMRAAM" which has been used for as long as 20 year, is similar to SD-10 but about 25% lighter. China considers SD-10 performance equivalent to or better than "AMRAAM" as it has a more advanced guidance system. However, "AMRAAM" missiles have been widely used in combats and have excellent records; if China wants to prove what it said, it would need a same combat reco
