Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's Visit to India

India-China rail link through Nepal suggested

New Delhi, Dec 15: Stating that Nepal looks upon both India and China as new opportunities for development, Nepal's Former Foreign Minister Dr. Prakash Chandra Lohani on Wednesday proposed a trans Himalayan rail link, connecting the two Asian giants through the Himalayan Republic.

Dr. Lohani, the co-chairman and parliamentary department head of Rashtriya Janashakti Party (RJP), said developing this new connectivity as a rail link would immensely help all the three nations, especially India and China, world's top emerging economies, whose bilateral trade is increasing rapidly."The notion of regional connectivity and Nepal as the link is a big challenge," said Dr. Lohani, while making a presentation on "Nepal's evolving relations with India and China" at Observer Research Foundation, a public policy think tank headquartered at New Delhi.Pointing out that Nepal will remain sensitive to the "minimum national interests" of both China and India, Dr. Lohani also called for cooperation between these countries to utilize the Himalayan water resources in the best possible way."Water is going to be a big issue in the region. With India growing so fast, it requires lots of water for its needs," Dr. Lohani pointed out, stressing that already Nepal is providing huge water resources.Dr. Lohani said India and China, in consultation with the international community, should make it clear to parties in Nepal that leading the State through constitutional means is the only acceptable route to power and not street revolution to "capture the state" as advocated by the Maoists."A democratic and strong Nepali state - ideologically democratic, economically liberal and linked with the rising giants in our neighbourhood is in the best national interest of India, in all three areas - political, economic and security," he argued.Dr. Lohani further said the big neighbours should also resist the temptation to manipulate or micro-manage Nepali politics, which he described as the viceroy syndrome.Saying that the perception of nationality and nationhood is emerging in a strong way in Nepal, he said Nepali people are not anti-Indian but only pro-Nepal.

"Raising issues with India on trade, water resources, and even aspects of security is not being anti-India. It is just trying to see it from the interest of Nepal and seeking on a common space that is acceptable to both," Dr. Lohani contended."Being a pro Nepali is not against India's national interest on all three areas - political, economic and security," he said.Dr. Lohani also stressed that there is a need for candid communication and no name-calling, understanding each other's objectives and constraints."Development of trust based on dealings that are seen as being just and fair" is the need of the hour, he said.Former Ambassadors to Nepal, experts and academics took part in the discussion, which was chaired by M. Rasgotra, President of ORF Centre for International Relations and a former Foreign Secretary.

New Delhi, Dec 15 (IANS) "India-China friends forever" was the message sent out by Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao when he visited the Tagore International School here Wednesday to interact with its students.

Wen who arrived here Wednesday on a three-day visit, interacted with nearly 50 students of of the school during a talk on Mandarin, Chinese culture and calligraphy.

Addressing the premier affectionately as "grandpa Wen" Student Body President Abhishek Sanskritik said: "The premier was very positive about the friendship between the two countries."

He also said that Wen took questions from students on various subjects concerning India and China, including what China thought of India.

"His answers brought across the message of friendship between the two emerging powers India and China," he said.

School principal Madhulika Sen said the the experience was very educative.

"We did not want it to be political. He put all the students at ease while interacting with them... He spoke more about Tagore and how China too had been Tagore's home," Sen said.

Shweta Sument, a student at the school, was chirpy about the session.

She said: "The perception of China as a threat to India needs to change. The visit is going to strengthen the 'Hindi-Chini bhai bhai' bond."

The school has been running exchange programmes, calligraphy and yoga classes through video-conferencing under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Jinyuan School, ranked amongst the best language schools in Shanghai, Sen said.

The school was chosen for Wen's visit due to the enduring Chinese fascination with Nobel laureate poet-philosopher Rabindranath Tagore.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has already announced plans to introduce Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language in its 11,000 affiliated schools from Class 6 onwards next year.

You have changed a lot in last 5 months my friend..Watch out ..These forums are not exactly the reasons for which you should change your attitude towards a group of people..

Thank your own countrymen for helping me see the light.

As long as we improve our trade balance (whether at the cost of India's trade balance or not, I don't care) then Wen Jiabao can say anything he likes, it's just politics at the end of the day.

You guys can say "Hindi Chini bhai bhai" again if you want, let's see how far this kind of talk gets us this time around. Hopefully history will not repeat itself.

China is very friendly toward india which cannt be said the other way round

yeah? China has very funny way of showing its friendship.
1. by arming the archenemy with missiles and nuke warheads
2. stapled visas > questioning territorial integrity
3. denying visas to a general
4. trying to block NSG waiver
5. propping anti-india regimes in Indias neighborhood.
