Chinese Martial Arts

No worse than from some fake 'Shaolin monk'.
If you are referring to that guy fighting the Navy Seal, he readily admits that he trains at a martial art school associated with the temple, but is not an actual monk. Shaoline was a marketing plot by his promoter. He clearly doesn't buy into his own marketing bullshit. You on the other hand, I am not so sure about.

Still a bit too esoteric. The best combination of the martial arts for anyone wishing to learn self defense is boxing and karate, particularly Shotokan karate. Boxing teaches a person, man or woman, how to use the fists and arms hands down better than any martial arts and in the shortest time. Shotokan karate teaches a person, man or woman, how to best use the legs for the waist and below in the shortest time. Any kicking higher than the waist, and am speaking as a TKD stylist, increases the risk of being off balance and lose the fight. Against a Golden Glove caliber boxer, a 'black belt' of any Asian martial arts style has at best a 50/50 chance of a tie, not a victory.
I guess McDojos don't teach you about use Muay Thai, Jujit-Su and Judo then.

Heard that Judo is a watered down version of Jujitsu adapted for sport and therefore loses some of the more lethal/potent moves.( I'm not disrespecting the art btw)
Jujit-Su is certainly not watered down version of anything. Depends on what school of Jujit-Su you're talking about. The Japanese school has more in common with Judo with throws. Brazilian offshot is a little more focused on ground control, positioning and strength. Nowadays alot of people are moving into no-gi grappling, which is what I did at a sports club in university.

No worse than what those dime-a-dozen 'Shaolin sifus' teaches. Between a one-year trained boxer and a one-year 'Shaolin' trained kung-fu practitioner, those with street experience and common sense will put their money on the boxer any day.

this is just from experience, because i have 4 years of training in taekwondo which is utterly useless for defense purposes... only useful as an exercise. Taekwondo is the most useless martial arts in the world for defense as it is too limited to unstable stances (KICKING), and not as good as Tai Chi for exercise.

We are the result of our own intentions. Tae-kwon do is a very deadly art if practiced and the user is committed to it.

So you got a belt from a McDojo? You forgot to mention your 5th dan black belt in Bullshido.

I am a great admirer of Bushido. I always wanted to learn it, but never got time or the opportunity to train :cry:

I was talking about Judo, not Jujitsu. They added more margin of safety, removed certain dangerous holds and locks, removed armed combat, and put more emphasis on throws than strikes.

If you really wanna fight and not just look good doing some moves, try MMA/ Muay Thai.

Try kalari, it's the mother of all martial arts. Even the founder of Shaolin Kungfu, the legendary Bodhidharma was from Tamil Nadu and he was a master in Kalaripayattu.

Still in Kerala Masters are there who can use "Nokku varmam" to surrender people only by looking at their eyes without even touching them. This was shown as a live demonstration by a Local Tv channel(Star Vijay). Really proud to know that, still people are here who can do the tricks used by bodhidharma.

"Nokku varmam" can be used to surrender enemies by looking at their eyes. "Thodu varmam" and "oothu Varmam" can be used to attack enemies without even touching them.

The video is the guru "Prakasan gurukkal" who can do what bodhidharma can, but he is using skills only for cure not in fights or to harm anyone.

Street experience tells me that bouncers will beat the crap out of anyone no matter how many black belts he has.

I have seen a 6.7'' guy taking a full power spin kick in the face and then just carrying on with the pounding of the poor guy ...

there is a reason why no amount of Karate or boxing in the world will not let you beat up a bear or a gorilla

yep brute strength beats all, except certain types of tricks. you can definitely beat much bigger people with things like kicking them in the balls, eye gouging, choking and finger breaking.

like you said, even if you have a black belt in brazilian jujitsu, a bear will still kill you.

Not just brute strength, but functional compact muscles, which contributes to striking, power and brute strength, a body build like a brick wall not just swole and disfunctional like a bodybuilder. I will take a 6'0 fighter that weights near the same weight as a 6'7 fighter anytime, that the 6'0 compact fighter will handily beat the 6'7 more uncoordinate fighter. We seen this happen all the time in MMA or other mix martial arts fighting tournaments and the basic science behind this is the compact fighter easily shrugs of hits while being able to dish out much harder and more accurate hits himself.

That principle goes with grappling as well, if you want to take out a fighter so much taller than you go for his weakness, IE his weaker center of gravity. The same situation may not apply for boxing where reach plays an important role, but we have seen what some short heavyweights like Mike Tyson(5'10) could do when you have such a compact physic, you just power yourself inside an opponent and punch him into submission.

The origin of Shaolin Kung Fu is generally credited to an Indian monk named Tat Moh, who is also sometimes known as Boddhidharma. He began life as a prince in Southern India, but became a devoted Buddhist, renouncing his royal heritage to take up the simple lifestyle of a monk. He traveled widely, spreading the teachings of Buddhism. Eventually he rose to become the 28th patriarch of India.

In those days, it was common for Indian monks to travel to China where their Buddhist teachings were eagerly received. In the year 520 A.D. Tat Moh made just such a journey, right through India and China, finally settling at the monastery called Shao Lin - which means 'little forest'. He was disappointed, however, to find the monks very weak and unable to withstand the austere ways of Buddhism - a life which often consisted of long fasts and frugal living.
