Chinese daily fears India may resume nuclear tests

Beijing, April 27 (IANS) India is ‘likely to resume its nuclear tests’, the online edition of China’s main state-run daily said, asking China and other countries to sharpen ‘vigilance on India’s every manoeuvre’.
An editorial in the online edition of People’s Daily Wednesday said only North Korea and Iran were cast negatively in the international nuclear discourse.

‘But the fact is that behind the scene there exists a super antagonist in the US-produced nuclear soap opera, and it is India,’ said the newspaper in the editorial titled ‘Possible, India resumes nuclear test?’
The online edition is run by the People’s Daily, the official newspaper of the Communist Party of China.

India conducted its first nuclear test in 1974 — and again in 1998.
‘The reason why India refused to sign the NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty) is that it disagreed with the fact that only five large countries of the world use the NPT to monopolize the right for possessing nuclear arms,’ it said.

The editorial said: ‘India has long been desperately trying to step over the (nuclear) threshold, and gain the international recognition of being a nuclear power.

‘In the conditioning of India, equipped with nuclear weapons, it would boost confidence in dealing with Pakistan and pluck up courage to counteract China whom it has long taken as `a slumbering threat’ at its bedside.’

It added that the international situation appeared to favour India, saying the unrest in the Arab world was taking attention away from the Indian sub-continent.

‘And perhaps, once the Middle East situation further exacerbates, the US would risk helping India become a nuclear-weapon state. Considering this, India is likely to resume its nuclear tests. For this, China and all the neighbours should sharpen their vigilance on India’s every manoeuvre.’

No chance.

India is not ready to lose its credibility in the international comity for all times to come.

Kiteflying at best and aimed to do a bit of scaremongering and set the cat amongst the pigeon in the SE Asian countries given that the US is trying to cobble up a loose coalition amongst Asian countries and Australia.

What will extra scientific data India will gain by another blast?

I believe the same data can be obtained by simulations. But then I would not know for sure being no nuclear scientist.

Everything is china is controlled by government, China is trying to be offensive on India by passing such statements.. There s something fishy behind it... Pakistan who keeps close vigil on india haven't pass any such concern..

I think China is trying to sabotage Indian development by imposing low intensity war ...

this statement is part of their propaganda.. They are trying to emulate America (As Americans imposed war on Iraq in the name WMD)

State controlled Chinese media and its news articles , Apparently the author can't even research data properly before writing .

If 100 something nukes , Ballistic missiles , nuke subs etc - makes one only "try " to step over the nuke threshold

Chinese media keeping its citizens in fools paradise as usual....

Oh man I would like to see what the chinese on PDF have to say about their media. And they call Indian media overhyped

china probably has a lot more to worry about thn to look at this report . . they have a lot of things to do .. busiest nation on earth :)

It will take a BJP Govt to have the courage to resume testing.

Not all our N-warhead designs are validated.

Many scientists are pushing hard for long to resume testing.

If Indian govt. can manage pressure on the diplomatic front and can convince the Western nations not to impose sanctions then I see no harm in resumption of nuclear testing.

We need to move ahead from the 200 Kt yield capability that we keep dancing around.

The US hasn't manufactured a new warhead in 20 plus years. Before that it tested those warheads over a 1,000 times to certify them as reliable. The US's most powerful supercomputers are only used to re-certify the reliability of that stockpile without underground testing. Simulation alone is insufficient for any new designs. The US solution to this problem is to say the current stockpile is good for another 50 years, so worry about new designs later.

Yes, India will need more underground testing or the US will need to give India it's data & designs. Criticize Chinese media all you want, but this op-ed has merit.

i think we dont need any more weapons. even if we have 10 nuclear weapons with reliable delievery systems, no country can dare to attack us. meanwhile we should perfect our nuclear triad and get MIRV.

India does not need to test new weapons, but ensure that our stockpile is in healthy condition and does not deteriorate. As for china, they fear their own citizens, so nukes of India is not a surprise!!

PPls advocating that we do not test should know the importance of validating warhead designs.

Otherwise there is no guarantee that they will function as desired as and when they are used.
