Sickening. I can't believe this is happening in 2019. The surveillance, the cops following her and the fear on faces of people, this is why China doesn't allow journalists. So the world doesn't get to see the terrorism they're doing on Uighurs.

Yes an old Han lady had some arrogant and racist views on a train. Nothing remarkable there. Many old ladies think like that. Hope she gets reeducated herself.
When the reporter was accosted by police, she was hardly brutalized. She was told to not film sensitive areas and to move along. Police all over the world can be pushy, I didn't see any abuse of power. Police in Europe regularly boss people around in exactly this way. Clearly the journo is trying to exaggerate and so clearly, the police are right to be suspicious.
I agree that Uighur culture, language and religious rights must be protected. Their religious freedom should not be compromised. But there is no harm in teaching them to refrain from separatism and develop themselves.
At times these videos make xinjiang look like a police state, but not always. If there has been recently separatist activity, coupled with possible infiltration by foreign forces, then why is this surprising?
The younger Han men who seemed more thoughtful than the old train lady also questioned the heavy handedness of the police and simply wished to present their narrative that they are proud of the state they have grown up in - they didn't come across as arrogant or condescending towards Uighur people. They clearly weren't supremacist Han zombies that don't question anything, as western media would make us believe they all are.
Some heavily defended boarding schools teach citizenship lessons and people cry "state oppression". Gimme a break. We get the same brainwashing in Europe, we are just brainwashed into wanting it voluntarily, otherwise our social media status might take a negative hit and that might quickly spiral into serious charges of terrorism planning or sedition or a whole range of other trumped up stuff.
Just ask Julian assange or Mr snowden if their journalistic freedom was honoured in the free west.
I'm not defending everything I saw in the video...I'm just saying it is a slightly different version of "state worship" that we all put up with even out here in the free world. People need to panic less over these things as China quite simply protects China, whoever it us that is engaged in separatism, hk, Tibet and xinjiang all get fiercely monitored and spied on...this isn't some "anti Muslim" pogrom, which btw sets this clearly apart from the likes of Modi-land or Netanyahu-land.
All I see here is a protective nation state and their well intentioned attempts at reducing separatist sentiment by enhancing and improving the lives of those susceptible to separatism. Nobody said they are flawless but they aren't doing too bad a job I would say since many would agree that terrorist attacks have ended, and xinjiang appears to be developing.
