A strong military have an even stronger economy behind it & not the other way around.

Here is what I found on the Wikipedia, explaining why the Sino-Vietnamese was a "failure" (not really) in the eyes of the Vietnamese.
"When China sent troops across the border into Vietnam, many observers assumed that China would win the conflict. This estimate was based on the huge size of the Chinese army and on its excellent performance against United Nations forces in the Korean War. After China failed to achieve a decisive victory, the same commentators examined China's transportation and telecommunication networks and found that, while they were very highly developed in the Northeast, they were quite primitive in the South. It was concluded that the advanced northeastern systems and the primitive southern systems were prime factors in China's success in Korea and in its lackluster performance in Vietnam. In the end, both China and Vietnam claimed victory."
There is a reason why the Southern forces weren't as good as the Northern force.
Many of the best units were stationed near Beijing, the capital. Also, many other good units were stationed near the border with the Soviet Union and Mongolia.
If the Northern forces were sent to Vietnam, they would steamroll the war shocked Vietnamese forces, remorselessly. But the Southern forces were sent instead.
So, to the boastful Vietnamese members here, please read and think about this before claiming your "super duper" army defeated the Chinese.
Actually, never mind. They'll just ignore, thanks to the massive ignorance stuck between their thick skull and their brain.

It took only one country, France, to bang Vietnam. It took only a few thousand French colonial administrators to rule millions of Vietnamese peasants, and impregnate thousands of Vietnamese women. Pol Pot did not trust China, it was China which mistakenly trusted Pol Pot.
Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge helped Vietnam, and set back the anti-Vietnamese resistance by KILLING the Cham and Montagnard leaders of the anti-Vietnamese FULRO.
The Cham and Montagnard fighters had bases in Cambodia from which they raided in Vietnam, killing Vietnamese troops in order to free Champa and the Central Highlands. The Cambodian Cham Muslim officer Les Kosem led the Champa Liberation Front against Vietnam.
However, when the Khmer Rouge got into power, they first fought against Les Kosem and forced him into exile in Malaysia. The Khmer Rouge then rounded up the Montagnard leaders in FULRO, and had them all killed, and severely hampered FULRO's activities in Vietnam. China tried supporting FULRO with weapons and materiel, but the Khmer Rouge severely restricted their resistance against Vietnam.

The Cham IOC organization noted that although FULRO became an enemy of the Khmer Rouge, it continued to fight against Vietnam and try to free Champa and that the Cham still work with the Kampuchea Khmer Krom and Montagnards against Vietnam today.
