China's one-child policy fallout

The Chinese government says its so-called "one-child policy" has succeeded in reining in its population.

But more than three decades after the policy's implementation, China is dealing with some challenging consequences.

In a country where families often value sons over daughters and $20 can get you an illegal gender ultrasound test, there is a massive gender imbalance.

Combined with the country's economic development, this has left an entire generation of men unable to find wives.

That's a serious problem, but that's what you get for being sexist.....

YouTube - China's one-child policy creates massive gender imbalance

this is absurd.
i think they should make it two child policy instead of one .
this descison is very absurd.

Though the gender imbalance is a problem i always wondered about the long term effect, 4 grand parents, two parents one child. Who is going to be looking after the elderly in China and what effects are there on the economy when most of the population is over 60?

.
i dont think the situation in china is so tragic that they had to make such a desperate policy to keep population.

Well as women's "rarity" increase, their "values" will go up. As their "values" go up, their "desirability" to potential parents would also go up ... And as "desirability" goes up, the "supply" will hopefully go up ...

Isn't that how the Magical Market is suppose to operate?

BTW, a few of my cousins could legally have two children (both parents are the only child in their respective families), but not one of them did!

Until then, old-time Tibetans are role models - they share ...

You know these effects go both ways. I mean look at it from a different angle. If you are the only child of two parents and 4 grand parents, you will get all the attention as well as resources available to the family to be used on your well being.

I have so many Chinese class mates here and they are the most cool people in terms of their get ups and gadgets because they get whatever they want and money is hardly an issue for them.

It is uncertain exactly why, but naturally more boys are born than girls. Some scientific studies conclude that because male sperm (Y chromosome) is more active (but shorter lived) than female sperm (X chromosome) is the reason. Anyhow, the over evolutionary history this has proved advantage because men more often engage in more hazardous work and in armed conflict.

For whatever reason the # of boys born over girls born is only small difference. While it is true that many couples prefer boys over girls, that number is decreasing. Also when we factor in the natural birth distribution, the trend is OPTIMISTICALLY IMPROVING.

Furthermore, there are excess women in Russia, Japan, ASEAN, Europe, Americas, etc so the issue of finding a mate is a small issue in this globally mobilized world. And indeed many more Asian Males are getting married outside of their ethnic/racial group -- and this trend is positively increasing.

Lastly, this issue is often over-hyped in "certain" media (*cough* propaganda *cough*) outlets. You can see for yourselves there is a HEALTHY BALANCE of males-to-females in Asia (CJK + ASEAN). I am not certain of Pakistan, but I can speak for India. When I went to India it was SHOCKING to find an alarmingly greater gender imbalance -- much more so than in China, in fact terribly imbalanced. This is due to several important factors:

1) Pre-natal abortion

2) Post-natal "abortion"

Let's discuss the issue of post-natal abortion. This is when the baby has already been born. In India a greater bias towards males than females, leads to 2). What typically happens is one of several things:

a) baby girl is not fed for days or weeks, and left to starve to death;

OR

b) baby girl is suffocated with a blanket to die;

OR

c) baby girl is drowned in water to die

Bharat's situation is much more SEVERE than PRC for several important reasons:

Firstly, Hindustan's population density is unsustainable. In fact, it relies on MASSIVE IMPORTATION OF FOODSTUFF -- yet even with this there are massive starvations (leading to death) and farmer suicides each year!

Secondly, the gender imbalance in Hindustan is much, MUCH HIGHER. In the PRC the preference for boys is DECLINING, and there have already been talks to modify the preferred policy to 2-child as the population enters sustainable growth --- so this already becomes less of a future problem. In Hindustan however, little improvement (if any) have been accomplished. This problem is compounded when one considers Indian men have much harder difficulties attracting mates outside of their ethnic/racial group.

In conclusion, this issue has been highly hyped-up in PRC, while it has been glossed over in other more seriously affected regions of the world.

There is no need to bring in "Hindustan" for this ... although I concur that sexism among the Chinese are nowadays a bit less "stinging" than among the Indians (my first hand observation only) ...

However, it is a social problem however you cut it and slice it. But most Chinese - including the diaspora, still tacitly agree that over-population was/is a bigger threat.

This 4-2-1 inverse pyramid Vassnti talked about is on everyone's mind ... no one knows where this experiment is headed ...

The Architect of the Reform said it was like "wading across the river by stumbling over pebbles" ... still wading, still stumbling, with no end of pebbles and no sight of the other side of the river bank yet ...

If india wants progress we should also adopt this (for a short term).later we can bring it back to two child policy.

India has also gender imbalance especially in northern states including Punjab and Haryana. Amartya Sen has claimed that there are 100 million "missing" girls. This gender imbalance may lead to war and violence as young men with no prospect of marriage will get their kick in other ways. Some Sikh men are marrying Bengali and South Indian girls since there no Punjabi Sikh girls available. The Indian culture of dowry has also fueled foeticide with catchy advertisement of "spend 600 rupees now and save 50000 rupees later".
