China's first homemade regional jet gets certificate

China's first domestically produced regional jet model was officially certified on Tuesday, marking a crucial step forward for the jet's entry into the market.

The ARJ21-700 won the certificate after a series of examinations by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) using the country's airworthiness standards.

The ARJ21, short for Advanced Regional Jet for the 21st Century, is a type of regional airliner designed and manufactured by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC).


There are 78 seats in a dual-class configuration and 90 seats in a full economy class configuration. Its economic life is designed to be 60,000 flying hours or 20 calendar years.

The first ARJ21-700 jet was designed and manufactured between 2003 and 2007 and made its first test flight in November 2008. Since then, the jet has completed more than 5,000 hours of test flights.

After the CAAC started the jet's certification process in 2012, a total of 300 ground examinations and more than 1,141 hours of test flights were carried out, the CAAC said.

Certification is not the end of the process, said Luo Ronghuai, vice president of COMAC and also head of the ARJ21 project.

There must be a period for improving the model's design, systems and operations before its entry into the market, Luo said.

The jet will still need to gain brand recognition and market share in order to be a success, and eventually it must be able to bring profits to the airlines that use it, he said.

The jet currently has 278 orders, COMAC data showed.

Its unfortunate for the delay, the long body version will never be implemented as by that time C919 will have enter service. But more cost saving or fuel efficient model maybe introduced for regional flight.

Too late. Should have been way earlier IMO. The newer larger body aircraft will put this out of market/business. This is without talking about other more efficient/effective competitors in this category like embraer and bombardier who have unveiled similar sized aircraft years ago and are already proven in the market. By the time this one starts operation it will be way too late. Think they should focus on the larger one(C919) so it can be put into operation ASAP, if they want to stand a chance at all, if the delay it like this ARJ21 then it will be too late for them as well.

Anyway, its a good project, and helps set up an aerospace industry in the country, so its overall still a useful project in the long term.

China has a huge market. Its success will lies in domestic sales to state control airliner company who will be obliged to buy few hundred of them. Russian Sukhoi -100 looks a very good spec compare to ARJ-21 but lacking a big domestic market will be its killing point.

Of cos, C919 will be the main future for China aviation development with expectation to sell a thousands.

As we know, Xian MA-60 also passed.
MA-60 is never slated to get FAA but ARJ-21 do.

We wish CAAC would be more careful with their certificate.

China offer a cheap alternate commercial airplane to the majority of the developing country. The more option the better the choice for the custom, drive down the price, consumer benefit.
