Li Yuhai, deputy general manager at China’s Aviation Industry Corp., known as Avic, and Lin Peng, the FC-31’s chief designer, were on hand at the Dubai Airshow this week to talk about the program. For More on This Story GO HERE

Tony Osborne, a reporter for Aviation Week & Space Technology, reported:

“With a first flight planned for 2019, an initial operating capability would occur in 2022 or 2023, and the aircraft would be fully operational two years later.

And this:

"The plane is made by Shenyang Aircraft Corp., a subsidiary of Avic, and resembles the U.S. military’s F-35 Joint Strike Fighter manufactured by Lockheed Martin Corp., though with two engines rather than one. The pair of Russian-made Klimov RD-93 engines are a variant of the propulsion systems found on the Mikoyan MiG-29."

RD-93? Isn't this the same engine in the JF-17? When the production J-31 starts flying, it might have an ingenuously designed new engine?

To clear up the confusion:

1. The improved variant of the FC-31 is expected to fly in 2016.

2. The FC-31 will go into production in 2019 (i.e. the first LRIP aircraft will fly in 2019), provided that a customer has ordered it and is willing to finance part of the development/testing phase.

3. Induction, as expected, will take a few more years, with IOC being slated for 2022-2023. Again, this is assuming that a customer has indeed purchased the aircraft.

Pakistan is considering buying between 30 and 40 of the Chinese aircraft to replace American-made F-16s for close air support, air interdiction and other missions.

To clear up the confusion:

The FC-31 was never intended purely for export. Having a major customer like the PLAAF/PLANAF would give the company major capital to finance further development of the FC-31 program (and other projects).

What about, The FC-31's "Big Brother," the Chengdu J-20, which first flew in January 2011.

Talking about Production model. In my opinion however, it will happen much faster.

Yes they are (sadly)!! Stolen designs and tech from the JSF. They have 2 prototypes ready and 2 being created for testing. You can see resemblance with the American platforms. The thing went up from final 15 in about 10 seconds, which I think is pretty good for a copy.......but their engine still blows smoke like an old car with a blown gasket :enjoy:

1) FC-1 in Pakistan won't replace the F-16's. The F-16's are there to stay beyond 2030.

2) The JFT block IV will be a potential addition which might form the top tier of the PAF, putting -16's as a complimentary second tier due to home built and advanced enough, eventually replacing the - 16's!! Plus if the PAF acquired any twin engined jets, those will also supplement too.

3) FC-1 will form Pakistan's top stealth tier (5th Gen) and would also serve as the master design for the JFT block IV and V (smaller, one engine stealth optimized planes).

4) China will induct the FC-1 in large numbers, specially in their Naval air fleet, and on AC's.
