China has launched a second round of sea-trials for its aircraft carrier. And a spokesman for the Ministry of National Defense responded to widespread concern over the trial’s aim.
The aircraft carrier, China’s first, left the northern port of Dalian Tuesday for testing.
A statement issued by the Ministry of National Defense last week said the trial is geared towards scientific research and experiments that the vessel’s first trial in mid-August didn’t cover.
However, the move drew considerable attention to increasing Chinese military power. And some speculated that it is related to ongoing disputes in the South China Sea. But it was dismissed by the defense ministry.
Geng Yansheng, Spokesman of Ministry of National Defense, said, "This is a routine trial of previously planned experiments. We hope the project will be viewed objectively and rationally. "

The spokesman didn’t give a timetable or detail the experiments and tests. But he confirmed they were running smoothly.
Experts say the trial is meant to test the steel cables used to catch and decelerate aircraft upon landing, and catapults may also be tested to see whether they can help propel planes into the sky. Communication and navigation systems could also be evaluated.
The carrier is a former Soviet Ship, The Varyag, towed from Ukraine in 1998 minus engines, weaponry and navigation systems. It was dispatched on its first five-day sea trials in August following years of refurbishment.
