Let's stop this Chinese love fest for a while and discuss something actually on topic.

As someone who grew up in Beijing, I'm not impressed with the recent skyscrapers boom. I'm proud of the fact Beijing was pretty much a horizontal city without high-rise buildings, and think further vertical development will only ruin Beijing's skyline.

I'd say let Shanghai to chase New York, Beijing should stay the way it is or at least look more into London or other European cities for models of development.

Why can't we have skyscrapers side by side with the Forbidden city and the old hutongs? Why not go for a contrast of the old and the new? Beijing is, after all, China's capital.

Here you can see skyscrapers side by side with old buildings in downtown Tianjin.

Because it will completely ruin the skyline? I don't want to walk in some old districts in Beijing and have a whole bunch of skyscrapers towering over me.

I grew up in central Beijing, 15 mins walk from Tiananmen. It had that sense of openness, you can look up and see the whole sky extending every direction.

Beijing should keep its own characteristics, and it's not just Beijing. Xian'an, Hangzhou, Suzhou, etc should all say no to skyscrapers.

I agree . Beijing would lose it's charm if too may modern sky-scrapers are built along side the historical structures. That is the reason why there are no sky scrapers around the Capitol Hill or Eiffel Tower. But again, it might work if the new city is separated from the old.
