'China will be 2nd most powerful nation by 2050'

The introduction of "race" into the conversation is all your idea, which renders the rest of your response "rather pointless", doesn't it?

Are the Han chinese not a race?

Who knows if in a century or so China won't assert its trade links to Pakistan as justification to install its own favored leaders, and eventually to invade and colonize Pakistan itself? After all, the Himalayas aren't much of a bother to airborne divisions based less than a thousand kilometers away from Pakistan's capital.

While I greatly appreciate your concern for Pakistan, rest assured that China invading Pakistan is about as likely as the Canadians taking Washington. Both might be technically possible - especially in your 100 years hence scenario - but are presently out of the realm of possibility. Threat perception is something that every state must calculate for itself. Others cannot "tell" you what your threat perception is. That is always a non-starter. That's why when foreign countries have lectured Pakistan on India not being a threat, it's never worked. It's like Pakistan telling Israel that Iran is not a threat to them, or vice-versa. You can say the words, but they won't have much of an impact.

China has overwhelming support in Pakistan, and is not perceived by anyone in Pakistan as a threat. And 5,000 years of Chinese history shows us that the Chinese have never been interested in occupying any territory, other than the contiguous areas they deem to be part of "China" for millennia. In contrast, there are many countries who have thrived on colonialism, imperialism and the illegal theft of wealth from lands they've invaded. It would be wiser to worry about countries with such chequered historical records prior to worrying about China.

Quite frankly, it is useless to make a prediction 40 years down the road based on current trends. Forty years is a long time and anything can happen.

Still, I wish China the best of luck in their future endeavors.
This is the century where China and India, the two Asian giants, reclaim their historical places in the global power system.

Well I think India and China are totally in a Deifferent League with Respect to Population.

The 3rd Highest Population is USA with 300 Million.

They are often taken as a Benchmark for being the Most Perfect Nation.

Literacy Rate: 99%
HDI: 0.95
Per Capita: 40,000$

It's my view that India and China will take over 100 Years to reach that, never in our Life Time.

I think these both Nations should completely set their own Definitions for Development.

First of all, the US is far from being "perfect". Ingrain that in your head right now.

Just as India and China have numerous social problems that are not found in the US, the US has numerous social problems that are not found in India or China. Our cultures and our philosophies are quite different. Trying to imitate the US will only lead to disaster.

The fact is, there is no way that India or China can have a GDP per capita of $40,000, or living standards comparable to the upper middle class of Americans. The reason is because there are not enough resources in this planet - food, water, energy, etc. - to allow nearly 2.5 billion Indians and Chinese to live as 300 million Americans do.

Consider this: America makes up only 5% of the world's population, and yet consumes 25% of the world's resources. If India and China consumed resources as wastefully (per capita) as Americans did, what would be left of this planet?

So no, India and China's benchmark should not and never be America and the West. We must set our own benchmarks.

Personally, I would be more than happy if India's GDP per capita increases to $20,000 by 2050. That seems achievable, given that current trends continue. But as I said before, the future is unpredictable.

I totally agree with you, the revolutionary green technology is the way to go for the enormous population of our countries!!! Currently, China is ahead over US in the field green technology, and i can foresee that India following the same path in the near future.

We don't possess a large chunk of colonized lands and natural resources like the Western countries have, but that would give us more motivation to push more investment in the green technology. Always trying to be as optimistic as possible.

I think it's hilarious that Solomon, our Israeli friend, is having a go at us over Tibet.

Newsflash: Tibet is recognized as a part of China, by every national government on Earth.

Whereas the land-grabbing and settlement building in the occupied territories by Israel is regarded as illegal by the United Nations and by international law.
The vast majority of the governments violating UN Security Council resolutions are close allies of the United States. Israel (just an example) is violating over 200 UN resolutions.

We should also look at the total number of UN vetoes. I doubt that China's UN vetoes made it past the first digit.

I think a GDP per Capita of 20,000 - 30,000 is more than enough - as long as there is a balanced and fair income distribution.

TL, do you think the Tibetans are impressed with Chinese "humility" when they see their native land swamped by millions of Han immigrants?

Better than American Indians with Europeans where the Indians were nearly exterminated and no more noises are heard and their land are infested with Europeans/foreigners ... :taz:

You point is that Han is not brutal enough such that Tibetans are still allowed to make noises?

My point was, quite simply, that the "Chinese sense of humility" TechLahore professed to "respect and admire" was not "innate" but a currently useful pose. A point aptly confirmed by the anything-but-humble responses of several Chinese posters on this thread to my argument, wouldn't you agree?

I certainly agree with you. I have been reading posts by Chinese forumers here and many of them will make you puke with their horrible attitude and supremacism. In addition, there's hardly any country which they don't have a problem with, with Pakistan and North Korea being notable exceptions!

Actually, Chinese trolls are notorious throughout cyberspace for trolling and flaming. On several other forums with less strict moderation I have constantly seen their habit of putting down other countries and cultures and the attitude of "we, the Chinese people are the greatest and you are s-h-i-t".

Now, I am NOT saying that other forumers are innocent. Yes, we have Indian nationalists who are similarly offensive, and those of a lot of other countries besides. But the point is, calling Chinese 'humble' and all that sort of sycophantic praise is laughable.

Holocaust was fake, Israel is terrorist nation, USA is terrorist boss.

Don't refute me, you'll only confirm that Jews are defensive, hostile and arrogant.

Think about what you say before you say it.

The thought had occurred to me that the Chinese here might not easily find a "humble" way to refute my argument. I'm pleased that you both recognize and understand one of the barriers Jews face when we respond to various calumnies against us in similar situations.

Wow, more stereotyping and generalizations.
