China and Vietnam have expressed support for Thailand's new military government, an army spokesman said, after several foreign governments voiced disapproval of the coup.

Army supporters held a small gathering yesterday at the Australian embassy in protest against the downgrading of relations after last month's coup, which saw General Prayuth Chan-ocha take power after months of political unrest that undermined the government of Yingluck Shinawatra.

China's and Vietnam's ambassadors to Thailand met Supreme Commander General Thanasak Patimaprakorn yesterday and assured us that they still have a good relationship with Thailand and that they hope the situation will return to normal quickly," said Yongyuth Mayalarp, a spokesman for the military's National Council for Peace and Order.

Myanmar's foreign affairs ministry said it recognised Thailand's new military rulers.

"Thailand is a sovereign state and the military government has been endorsed by their king," Aung Linn, a director general at Myanmar's foreign affairs ministry, said yesterday.

"Of course we do recognise them."

China's foreign ministry had no immediate response to the report.

The United States scrapped joint military programmes with Thailand days after the May 22 coup, while the European Union has urged the military to free political detainees and end censorship.

Australia downgraded its ties with Thailand on Saturday, imposed a travel ban on junta leaders and cut defence cooperation, the toughest measures taken by a foreign government since the change of regime.

A handful of pro-military demonstrators gathered outside the Australian embassy yesterday to protest against what they see as foreign meddling in Thailand's internal affairs. Some handed roses to police at the embassy.

The army is determined to silence dissent and has summoned around 300 activists, journalists, academics and politicians since taking power two weeks ago.

Many have been detained for varying periods of time and, in order to be released, have had to sign statements that they will step away from politics and halt anti-coup activities.

The military government has deployed thousands of police and troops across the country to search for weapons in a bid to crack down on armed groups on both sides of the political divide.

It seems Vietnam didn't get the memo. When you become a US puppet state, you have to support US foreign policy in lockstep, otherwise you get burned. Pakistan learned this the hard way. Now Vietnam risks getting a dressing-down.

the Thai military junta is pro-VN, therefore the decision to recognise them :partay:

it is you who does not get the picture. Uncle Sam suspends aid to Thailand following the coup.
even If one day we join a security alliance with the US, you chinese have no say.

Exactly. Why are you cozying up to new military government after the US clearly designated them off-limits? Are you ready for your spanking?

since when are you pretending to be Barrack Obama?

I think what Raphael says makes great sense and you should appreciate him for pointing this out. Nothing comes free in this world; when you cozy up to the US for support against China, the US will one day come back and ask you to follow their line. When/if you fail to do that, the US will get angry and since you are no China, you will be punished. So, think a hundred times before taking a step.

Too much excitement and hot-headedness (look how Turkish PM is lowering himself to a lunatic fanatic out of his hot headedness) is unhealthy for a nation. I think Vietnam should think long term and see the region 30 years from now and act accordingly. Do you have capability to do that?

But I enjoy seeing two comrades pursuing policies in similar step.

sorry, I don´t know what you are talking about. you are talking about things in 30 years?

tomorrow a war can break out if you don´t withdraw the actual fcking oil rig and continue placing more of the likes in our waters. China is the last country on earth that can give Vietnam a lesson in foreign policy. It is none of your business how we maintain external relations.

Do you think America is bad?
Yes, that is correct. But China is worse.

What have you done to help us to recover from wars and destructions?
Did you ever say "Sorry" and pay compensations for the many wars you raged against us?

China media is shameless to threaten Vietnam with war recently. Chinese warships intrude to our waters and harass our fishing vessels. Some chinese posters insult and threaten killing us to the last women and men. AND you are talking about our bright future in 30 years?

Yes, but in 30 years Vietnam may no longer exist.

What kind of benefit Vietnam can provide to Thailand military government ?

You are too funny. I really enjoy your posts even if it's childish. China is drilling off it's Xisha islands. Vietnam sends warships disguised as fishing vessells to cause trouble for the Chinese. Who is provoking a war? Who is the troublemaker?

China will not move its rig, in fact a second one is heading to Xisha as we speak. If you want war with China which I don't think it's wise, than you urge your navy and sink a Chinese ship.

If Vietnam cease to exist 30 years from now, it's due to people like you who are your leaders. Look in the mirror for the one to blame.

why does the military junta need Vietnam´s backing? with Vietnam help, they will win the backing of ASEAN.
Thailand confident Vietnam will understand situation : Sihasak - The Nation

Vietnam has agreed to recognise the junta and promised to provide assistance to stabilise the country. One example, the governments of Vietnam and Thailand will meet at a joint cabinet meeting soon.
Maybe China can support Thailand become the region powerful nation in Indo-China areas, to give more weapons & funds support. Let Thai deal with Vietnam.

Good thinking. While we are a democratic country, we are so by choice. If Thailand needs a junta, then let them have it to stabilize their nation.

Their country, their rules.

About time Thais show the door to those who meddle in Thailand's internal affairs.

It is hard to predict the trustworthiness of the Thai military. The status quo is fine.

The Thai military just want to put our name on it to give it more justification and credibility. They should know we have a non-intervention policy. The status quo remains our priority. We want a stable Thai environment. They know that.
