Type 96AG features a more powerful engine, improved electronics and a western-style turret. Recent photos suggest the Type 96AG was heavily modified with add-on armor modules and explosive reactive armor, similar to the Type 99 standard. Its internal electronics may also have been upgraded to Type 99 standard.
 
2300 of these are already in service.

Nice. This will serve as the bulk of China's third gen tank fleet.
 
It's actually not that big if you compare the size of the gunner's hatch on the turrent.

This is the low of the high-low combo of PLA 3rd gen tank force.

When are they phasing out all those roundie turrents (ie type 69), they're so 20th cent.
 
At first glance looks smart also seems its width is reduced.
