China has launched serial production of the J-10B multipurpose fighters. After coordination of the project, it was decided to equip the aircraft with the Russian-made AL-31F turbojet engines, as the trials of the Chinese WS-10 Taihang power unit have not been finished yet.
It should be noted that the Air Force’s Command of the People’s Liberation Army proposed to start producing this aircraft with the reliable Russian-made power unit, while the Defence Purchase Department and representatives of the national defence industry offered to equip the fighter with the Chinese engine, despite several problems during its tests.
The information about a new modification of the J-10A multipurpose fighters appeared in 2009. Its main difference from the J-10A version consists in the improved airframe and upgraded avionics.

The one used in J-10B are Russian AL-31FM3 with max thrust (estimate 13,600kg to 14,000kg)close to 117S but without the overheat issue.

The domestic WS-10 A has long finished tested and equipped with our unit but it's max thrust (13,200kg) is more suit for J-11B ,J-11BS and J-16 which top thrust is not a criteria.

Will China buy AL-41 engines to power J-20s?

impossible, chinese is developing WS-15 for J-20, what are you talking about, its a dead project, developed in early 1992 for MIG-1.42, there is no AL-41 project today, its technology is use in 117S engine:hitwall::hitwall::hitwall:
