China should now take 'pushy' India seriously: Chinese daily

BEIJING: China must start taking an of late "pushy" India seriously as it has strategically placed itself in the US-China face-off to gain maximum benefits, a leading official newspaper here said.

Days after the postponement of the 15th round of Sino-India border talks, Global Times, an influential tabloid of ruling Communist Party of China, said the talks need to be kept alive to avert a breakdown in ties.

In the first such comment from the Chinese media on the postponement of the border talks, the paper said that of late India appears to be interested in having a face-off with China and Beijing should start taking it seriously.

"The scheduled talks between China and India over border issues at the end of November were temporarily postponed," the Times said referring to deferment of talks over Beijing's objections to the Dalai Lama addressing a Buddhist conference in New Delhi.

The Chinese media has so far avoided publishing any report on the postponement of the talks that were supposed to be held in New Delhi this week between national security advisor Shivshankar Menon and top Chinese diplomat Dai Bingguo.

In a surprisingly guarded editorial tiled 'China and India mustn't go for the throat', The Times, which in the recent past has carried write ups asserting that China should resolutely stop India-Vietnam cooperation in the South China Sea using "every possible means", struck a more conciliatory note today, saying both countries should stop "over reacting to their disputes" to aggravate the crisis.

"While speculations about this decision (for postponement of talks) are varied, one thing is certain: India, whose GDP is a third of China's, has been maintaining a bold stance when dealing with China. Indian public opinion will not permit concessions to China, but China will not yield to India's demand on border issues either," it said.

"This is where the dilemma is. Both sides must keep the border issue from worsening by focusing on keeping goodwill talks alive and being mindful of the consequences of a sudden breakdown".

"Currently, India is a bit pushy in its relations with China. The country appears to be highly interested in facing off with China. But that contest is not the primary focus of the Chinese society," it said.

It said if India can maintain its current economic growth rate, it will only become increasingly important to China, and that India's placing itself strategically in the US-China conflict will make it difficult for Beijing to "buy it over".

. . .
this will make so many indians proud that for once their country causes 'major' concern on Chinese newspaper``

This is not the first article from newspaper controlled by ccp. And this will not be last one.
And until now china was arrogant and pushy that was ok, when india started to stand by itself, then india becomes a concern, a pushy one.

.
They are unhappy with our rail and road projects in Himalayan region and think that we should take permission from them to do every thing.

The reality is just the opposite and world knows it because China is fighting with all of its neighbors. Well, whatever China does is her own policy but they have to be little more understanding...

Well thats not true...Its just that if China really wants peace its tenable. China is such a great and large country, they don't lose anything if they give into Indian demands. Not to mention the land under dispute is useless for any purpose. Also China shouldn't interfere with India-Pakistan dispute and India will leave China Vietnam alone. As far as Tibet is concerned, China should know we treat our guest like god, but we also won't let them use our land to attack our enemy and China should see our track record. India does not allow any anti-china activity on her soil while many countries allow it and still China has no issues with them.

This means that the PRC govt is putting pressure to rein in belligerent articles. At least until the border talks continue.

whatever the ground realities are we already know. The ground realities need not be told by some chinese media.
The onus was on the chinese media to acknowledge them and make them abreast with reality.

we are neither happy nor belligerent.

Having said that, the article first mention that India has placed itself strategically ( thereby acknowledging its independent identity in the US-China game ) but also goes on to say that it will be increasingly difficult to buy over India after some years down the line ( assuming US has already bought us ) and fails to acknowledge the independent foreign policy of INDIA which is not correct interpretation.

lets not delude ourselves, they are the stronger nation by far.

They should be:

- Their land is is larger
- Their population is larger

And we are not in any illusion we know china's threat and power and we are preparing for it.

If china is strong it have even stronger neighbors and enemies be it Russia, S Korea, Japan, USA or India.

Aww.. now the ickle government paper has to "guide" Chinese folks into reassuring themselves. :P. This is better than funny.

Here's the article.

China and India mustn't go for the throat

The scheduled talks between China and India over border issues at the end of November were temporarily postponed. While speculations about this decision are varied, one thing is certain: India, whose GDP is a third of China's, has been maintaining a bold stance when dealing with China. Indian public opinion will not permit concessions to China, but China will not yield to India's demand on border issues either.

This is where the dilemma is. Both sides must keep the border issue from worsening by focusing on keeping goodwill talks alive and being mindful of the consequences of a sudden breakdown.

Currently, India is a bit pushy in its relations with China. The country appears to be highly interested in facing off with China. But that contest is not the primary focus of the Chinese society.

Both China and India have been feeling anxious about being "circled." But their roles are different in each other's eyes. For India, China is the plotter and executor of this "scheme," whereas for China, India is a participant to this theory. The insecurity from both countries is not on the same level.

Nationalistic sentiment is strong in India. It claims that India is on the "first tier" of the world even though the country is still developing. India has been eagerly seeking this acknowledgement worldwide. Although the US has given the country a first tier diplomatic formality, the "elephant" is not satisfied. What it really wants is the first-tier growth rate and statistics that match China's.

However, China rarely thinks of India when it plans its economy. While it is predictable that India will get excited when their GDP growth outpaces China one day, it is hard to say whether China will feel any sadness at this result.

This does not imply that China does not take India seriously. If India can maintain its current economic growth rate, it will only become increasingly important to China.India will not allow itself to stay quietly between the US and China. It wants to play triangle affairs with the duo, and will do anything it can to maximize its benefit out of it.

Therefore, China will find it hard to buy India over. It needs to treat the South Asia country seriously.

The US has been persuading India to join its alliance against China, and issues between China and India, such as border disputes and the Dalai Lama, are difficult to solve. Therefore, China's relation with India will face a tough road ahead. But India's ambition of becoming a strong power, as well as its economy-driven policy, will help stave off these uncertainties. This ensures that China's relations with India will not be the worst among neighboring countries.

Both countries should stay calm and not take small issues to a level of strategic hostility. India's power and its development will not make it a strategic enemy to China.

News media in New Delhi have been making stories from unreliable sources to advocate the so-called "China threat theory." Both countries should avoid overreacting to their disputes, but that does not mean these issues should be hidden away.

What we need to do is not aggravate it.

Intention of the article seems good, but choice of words seems very fan boyish:lol:
