China ready to work on Ctg-Kunming road link

Chinese Vice President Xi Jingpin has told BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia that China is ready to work together with Bangladesh towards establishing road and rail link between Chittagong and Kunming as part of growing connectivity in the region, reports UNB.

The Chinese Vice President said this during a meeting with Khaleda Zia at Beijing's historic Great Hall of the People Thursday afternoon, according to a message received here.

Xi Jingpin said China will actively consider participating in the construction of a deep sea port in Sonadia in the Bay of Bengal.

Khaleda, also the leader of the opposition in parliament, is now in China on a weeklong visit.

Khaleda Zia's meeting with the Chinese Vice President received wide publicity in the Chinese media. It was the lead news in the electronic media Thursday.

The BNP chairperson went to China on Monday at the invitation of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Khaleda is scheduled to leave Beijing on Friday for home via Bangkok.

On her arrival at the Great Hall, BNP Chairperson and her delegation members were formally received by Xi Jingpin and other senior leaders in traditional Chinese custom.

During the meeting, the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and China were discussed in great details with special emphasis on ways to strengthen it further in the days to come.

Assuring Khaleda of China's continued economic, financial and technical support to Bangladesh in the days ahead, the Chinese Vice President said that the relations between China and Bangladesh will get a new dimension in near future.

Both leaders agreed that this project would play a vital role for the economy of Bangladesh and other countries in this neighbourhood.

Xi Jing Pin recalled that the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and China were established by late President Ziaur Rahman and spoke of President Zia's invaluable contributions towards strengthening the relations.

He was happy that these have further been consolidated under the wise leadership of Khaleda Zia.

The Chinese leader recalled the contributions of Khaleda Zia towards promoting socioeconomic development in Bangladesh.

Xi Jingpin said, "Strengthening party-to-party relations between the CPC and the BNP will contribute towards giving our bilateral relations a further boost."

In response, Khaleda said the people of Bangladesh have always considered China as a special friend.

She recalled with gratitude the immense contribution that China has made in the economic and infrastructure development in Bangladesh and expressed confidence that this would continue in the future. She also reiterated BNP's support to China's 'One China Policy'.

The former premier expressed the hope that a solution can be reached between China and Japan over disputed Islands in East China Sea in the interest of peace and stability in the region.

Khaleda wished the upcoming 18th Congress of the Communist Party of China a success and expressed confidence that China will attain greater success under the dynamic leadership of the party.

Inshallah we will move the direction rajapakse's SL is heading as soon as awami crooks are ousted. China will always be a irreplaceable development partner of BD and a truly trusted time tested friend. The ctg-kunming highway when it will take off (and it will definitely take off oneday inshallah) and the prospected sonadia deep sea port if done by the chinese will permanently seal a unbreakable strategic bond of friendship and trust between BD and china. Inshallah it will happen. :)

For deep sea port, China sent officials multiple times to talk about financial assistance and project modalities but Awami League regime showed no interest on advise from india. There will be no movement as long Awami League regime in power. So we lost good 7 years since feasibility study completed. And if I may add, success of building the deep sea port will depend on character and direction of next govt.

I am an optimist bro. Inshallah it will even be far better & patriotic than the one in 2001-2006. We simply have no other options do we? :)

High-profile China team due today- Aid deals worth $260m to be signed

FHM Humayan Kabir

Bangladesh is likely to get a big boost to improving the economic ties with China as a high-profile delegation from Beijing is coming to Dhaka today (Saturday) for expanding cooperation between the two nations, officials said Friday.

"The Chinese team will sign two aid deals worth nearly US$ 260 million with Bangladesh government on Sunday, the second day of its two-day visit to Dhaka," a senior Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) official told the FE.

The 63-member delegation, led by Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, will call on Bangladesh's President, the Prime Minister and the opposition leader in parliament on Sunday.

Mr Changchun, also the propaganda chief of the CPC, will participate in a bilateral luncheon meeting at Jamuna State Guest House in Dhaka with Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni on Sunday, he told the FE.

The senior MoFA official said Dhaka and Beijing would sign a $236 million loan deal for setting up a river water treatment plant beside the Padma river to supply water to Dhaka city and another $24 million in grant deal.

Under the $236 million loan, Dhaka WASA will set up a water treatment plant beside the Padma river at Jashalia. The WASA will bring water from the plant in a bid to supply it across the capital city.

Under the proposed grant aid deal, Dhaka will be able to utilise the $24 million fund in any development project of the country.

Another senior foreign ministry official said the visit of the Chinese delegation would enhance the economic relations between the two nations as Bangladesh was interested to boost its ties with the emerging economic superpower China.

An Economic Relations Division (ERD) official said, "We would request the Chinese delegation to expedite its financial support for the development projects in Bangladesh."

Dhaka has already sought nearly $5.0 billion's worth assistance for its 29 development projects for upgrading infrastructure and boosting the socio-economic condition.

"During the bilateral discussion, we will also seek $290 million financial assistance as grant for constructing the Karnaphuli tunnel in Chittagong," the ERD official told the FE.

The Chinese government has already assured of proving the fund as loan for building the tunnel under the Karnaphuli river, which will now be approached to provide it as grant, he added.

Earlier, Beijing had finalised loans for the 7th Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge on the Arial Khan river in Kazirtek, Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Centre in Dhaka, setting up of Shahjalal Fertiliser Factory and 3G telecommunication system upgrading for the state-owned Teletalk.

In January this year, the Chinese government has confirmed its single largest loan for building the Shahajalal Fertiliser Factory. A total of $235 million in concessional loan and $325 million in preferential buyers' credit has been offered for the fertiliser factory project.

Interesting fact from the news: while indians had been making sure all rivers are dammed and Bangladesh does not get enough or any water, Chinese are providing grant (money that does not have to be paid back), loans and technical support so Bangladesh can have enough drinking water. That ought to tell the story why Bangladesh welcome Chinese involvement in Bangladesh.

Burmese aholes have no honor and are untrustworthy, they do not keep their words. Given the rohingya situation and the backwardness of the Burmese nation I am no longer convinced that connectivity can be achieved or if achieved can be maintained. We are not landlocked, we should concentrate on having a bigger merchant navy and also developing our ports. If this works out great but Burmese should not be trusted, their words have no value whatsoever.

Good now you get the taste of same medicine that harming us. I want china to build Dam and withdrew all water goes into bloody Bharat.

lmfao, you lots are a joke.

Where do you think that river eventually goes? Your Jamuna river is Brahmputra in India, Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet. Its the same river! China started to dam Yarlung Tsangpo/Brahmputra/Jamuna, India will dam all the tributaries(already started) to secure water for North East India, only the Bangladeshis will be left out dry.

Get a grip eh, they don't teach geography in BAngladesh?

. .
Yarlung Tsang Po becomes Brahmaputra after it enters North East states of India and then Jamuna as it enters Bangladesh.

China will hopefully manage this river jointly with North East states concern and Bangladesh concern. I am optimistic that this will happen, because both Bangladesh and North East Indian states are friendly towards China and it is matter of mutual management of three friendly group of people.

If mainland India tries to divert that water through Siliguri corridor then it will become another matter.

Here comes another shyte stirrer. There is no Mainland India and North East Indian states. Water resource is a central government concern, not state's.

China can suck all the water out of Yarlung Tsangpo(as Al Zakir requested:rofl:) it would not affect India. Thats why India is busy building dams on all the rivers that originate in India.

Water management is a central Govt responsibility, nothing to do with North East states...

Such a dumb statement I dont even know what to say. If China dams the rivers, whaever water is left comes to India, and after India uses the water, whatever is left over goes to Bangladesh. China damming this river affects Banglaesh negatively more than India because you guys are last on the river route :P
