BEIJING: Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie on Thursday promised all form of assistance to the Bangladesh military in order to advance bilateral and military relationship.
"China is willing to enhance interactions with Bangladesh in all fields and at all levels to advance bilateral and military relations and make contributions to safeguarding regional peace and stability," Liang told the visiting chief of army staff of the Bangladesh Army, Muhammad Abdul Mubeen.
Mubeen's visit to Beijing comes within days of his army and government participating in an agreement for settling the India-Bangladesh border dispute during the recent visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Dhaka.
The official Xinhua news agency quoted Mubeen as saying that the government and military of Bangladesh attach great importance to developing relations with China. Bangladesh is willing to work with China to enhance cooperation and further promote military-to-military relations, he said.
Liang responded by saying that it was China's established policy to strengthen friendly cooperation with Bangladesh.
There was no specific mention of China offering to sell arms to Bangladesh although it is well known that Beijing is expanding its network of arms markets in Asia and Africa.
Beijing and Dhaka have been involved in talks for lying a railway line connecting Kunming in China's Yunnan province with Chittagong in Bangladesh via Myanmar as part of the Trans-Asian Railway project of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. Developing this rail link will boost movement of both civilian and military hardware between the two countries, observers said.
