China may match Obama support for India for UN seat

United Nations Security Council veto power - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This says that Russia used the veto 123 times, the USA used the veto 82 times, etc.

China only used it 6 times in total. China prefers to "abstain" rather than veto.

Not sure i just read it on here oh i read it wrong it says

Between the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the end of 2004, vetoes were issued on 19 occasions. For that period, usage breaks down as follows:

the United States used the veto on 13 occasions (11 regarding the Middle East, one Bosnia, one in 1989 following its invasion of Panama)

Russia/the Soviet Union used the veto on 4 occasions (two regarding Cyprus, one Bosnia, one Myanmar)

Till date China was not so active in world politics... China kept it self away from most of the cold wars politics and now it is using politics to expand its industrial growth. And in business you have to manage all types of customers with :smitten::smitten:

That's right.

So I think it is very unlikely, that China will veto India's bid for a permanent seat.

China almost never uses its veto power, it will usually just abstain from voting.

And in this case it might even give outright support to the UNSC reforms.

@Speeder... good reasoning up there... but the only downside I see with China vetoing is that it will heighten the tensions between India and China... and you already know who the other powers will side with given the current situation. With billions of dollar trade on the line, I would think this is not a probable situation.
This means that if the argument does reach a standstill, it will just raise tensions in Asia, nothing more.

Though i have stated before that India will enter the UNSC eventually, and China is gonna welcome India when that happens. But we can't preclude the possibility of China vetoing India this time.

The tensions between China and India have always been heightened by India side for a long time. No doubt, if China vetoed India this time, it would infuriate India and may add more turbulence to Sino-Indo relationship. But let's be honest, Sino-Indo relationship has never been good enough for one to support the other to gain the most powerful diplomatic tool-UNSC seat, given all the conflicts we had and are having.

Think about it from another perspective, if India was the one who was holding UNSC seat and China was the one who was trying to get it, will India support China? If you have an answer, will you share it with us?

More importantly, China sees no chance of bettering bilateral tie with India even if China supports India this time, because we have not felt any sincerity from Indian side. India is more like pushing China to support her, rather than asking for it politely. The implication in your post that India is gonna avenge upon China if being vetoed by China just makes it a blackmail.

Nevertheless, i also don't rule out of possibility of India getting what she is fighting for. Politics can not be easily predicted, it is out of our hands. Anyway, good luck to India.

Support on issues concerning developing nations, climate change, emission caps, maybe currency reforms too.

But India votes alongside China in those matters right now anyway -- not because it loves China but because India's interests coincide with China on these matters.

If China opposes India's UNSC bid, the latter will not start voting differently just to spite China.

Right....But correct me if Im wrong here, but India can veto any new resolutions on Kashmir that go against Indian interests....right?

Given the makeup of the UNSC, any new Kashmir resolutions that are unfavorable to India will be vetoed by Russia (or the West) anyway. Anything against Pakistan will be vetoed by China. India's veto power is superfluous in this matter.

Mostly agree, although it seems like you are blaming India for "heightening tensions" and "lack of sincerity". Its good to to be patriotic, just dont let it cloud your objectivity. I think its highly likely that countries like India and Brazil could be part of an expanded SC altho not anytime soon. China could wait, watch, see which side the wind is blowing, and make a final decision. No one will be avenging nobody.. Anyways i think SC is a relic of the past, to remind everyone who won the last great war.

Good question. If you ask me frankly my answer will be yes, why not. In the UNSC, how many are developing countries? Would you allow the developed nations to take decisions for the rest of the world having 1/3 of the population of the whole world?

I have another perspective for you to ponder. Would China support India if both India and China would not have been a part of the UNSC?

Please do share an answer with us

Well, you certainly have got a greater mind than i do, i admire that.
