China successfully develops drone defense system: Xinhua

BEIJING Sun Nov 2, 2014

(Reuters) - China has successfully tested a self-developed laser defense system against small-scale low-altitude drones, state media said on Sunday.

The laser defense system is capable of shooting down small aircraft within a two-km (1.2-mile) radius and can do so within five seconds of locating its target
, the official Xinhua news agency said, quoting a statement by the China Academy of Engineering Physics.

The academy is one of the drone defense system's co-developers, Xinhua said.

The reported development comes as concerns about the country's military preparedness are being raised in state media. A front page article in China's official military newspaper last month said that weaknesses in military training posed a threat to the country's ability to fight and win a war.

The paper - the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Daily - said in the same report that China's military authorities had sent a document out to units detailing 40 weaknesses in current training methods.

President Xi Jinping has been pushing to strengthen the fighting ability of China's 2.3 million-strong armed forces as they project power across disputed waters in the East and South China Seas. China has developed stealth jets and has built one aircraft carrier.

The country's armed forces, the world's largest, came under criticism earlier this year from serving and retired Chinese officers and state media, who questioned whether they were too corrupt to win a war.

According to Sunday’s Xinhua story, the drone defense system is designed to destroy small-scale drones flying within an altitude of 500 meters and at speeds below 50 meters per second.

"Intercepting such drones is usually the work of snipers and helicopters, but their success rate is not as high and mistakes with accuracy can result in unwanted damage," Yi Jinsong, a manager involved with the project, was quoted as saying.

China develops anti-drone laser

BEIJING, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- China has successfully tested a homemade laser defense system specially targeting small-scale drones flying at low attitude.

The machine is able to shoot down various small aircraft within a two-kilometer radius and can do so in five seconds after locating its target, said a statement released Sunday by the China Academy of Engineering Physics, one of the system's co-developers.

Characterized by its speed, precision and low noise, the system is designed to destroy unmanned, small-scale drones flying within an altitude of 500-m and at a speed below 50m/s, it said.

"Intercepting such drones is usually the work of snipers and helicopters, but their success rate is not as high and mistakes with accuracy can result in unwanted damage," said Yi Jinsong, a manager with China Jiuyuan Hi-Tech Equipment Corp., a group under the academy spearheading the project.

According to Yi, small-scale, unmanned drones are relatively cheap and easy to use, which makes them a likely choice for terrorists. In addition, concerns have been raised over drones engaged in unlicensed mapping activities and the affect this could have on military and civil aerial activities.

The new laser system, which will either be installed or transported in vehicles, is expected to play a key role in ensuring security during major events in urban areas, the statement said, adding that a recent test saw the machine successfully shoot down more than 30 drones -- a 100 percent success rate.

The academy revealed that it was developing similar laser security systems with greater power and range.:o:

My advice for China.

Integrated CIWS, Laser weapon and Short range missiles.

This is a Civilian model for shooting down low-flying drones/aircraft models that may pose a threat to airports/airfields/buildings. The tactical variant used against cruise missiles and military surveillance drones is still under wraps. Rumour has it that ship-based testing began in December 2013.

from article, the specs is very similar to rheinmetall's 50kW laser anti-drone

There is one weakness for this kind of integrated system. That's this system can only target 1 arc at a time; as they are put into one fixed position that face into 1 arc.

There would be multiple systems onboard of a vessel. If this system is being operated to defend a high value ground facility then it can be mounted on a hill etc to give it good altitude and a suitable position for incoming threat engagement.

It's a low-power lazer weapon, max 2km range & 500m altitude, hit 50m/s speed target.

Wait for high-power Lazer weapon out to hit down aircraft.

This is for police use:

I am sure they won't reveal the systems for PLA uses, yet。:D
