Does the United States use it to hunt down African Americans? You're confusing racism in a society with a state sanctioned persecution of a ethnic minority. When it comes to personal liberty, freedom of religion/speech the United States probably stands at number 1 in my view, China should compare itself to Saudi Arabia. Both two sides of extremes.

If your mind wants to stretch my words further that they actually intend, be my guest. I only mentioned that since Google was also called being racists because of what their AI did.

In addition, if you know a little computer technology, you would have recognized that the news tries to play on people's feeling. No AI can recognize Muslims. Being Muslim is to adopt Islam as his religion. It is something in his head, not something written on his face. Unless AI can read mind, it is just not possible. What it can do at most is to recognize a group of people that are likely to be Muslims. It probably recognizes central asian or middle east people better than Muslims. It is likely to recognize a Jew as a Muslim.

Of course, if the news describes the thing as it really is, it won't stir up your feelings. So it twisted and from how you reacted, apparently it has succeeded.

Facial recognition technology’s failures when it comes to accurately identifying people of color have been well documented and much criticized. But an attempt by Google to improve its facial recognition algorithms by collecting data from people with dark skin is raising further concerns about the ethics of the data harvesting.

Google has been using subcontracted workers to collect face scans from members of the public in exchange for $5 gift cards, according to a report from the New York Daily News. The face scan collection project had been previously reported, but anonymous sources described unethical and deceptive practices to the Daily News.

Title is mis-leading .. A.I can not detect a person's religion from his or her face , hence the AI is basically to track all Chinese which is demonstrated by @beijingwalker .
@waz I think the Title needs to be changed .

Even if the system is decided to track all Chinese, it could still mean they can be used to track specifically Muslim, that's because the system was indeed designed to track everyone, that mean they could program the application to track Muslim group, as they belong to the subgroup of Chinese and they can look up the national registration.

Since we don't know what the capability of such system and what the Chinese Government are intended to do with it, they could as well used to track/target Muslim, minority or any expat group..

Notice that I do not suggest it was used to track any particular minority, I said there could be possibility that it was one of its usage.

So, google = government and police state?. The Chinese police state is using facial technology to go after a group they've put in prison, tortured, killed for simply being Muslims

We don't know. And that was my point.

Because it can be used to target anyone, and Muslim or any Minority subgroup is part of that "anyone" so unless we know how this AI system work, we don't know if they can be used to target any particular group, Muslim included.

So, unless we know what this system actually do (Which I highly doubt we ever will) It both is and isn't used to target Muslim. It's like the Schrödinger's cat paradox
