China Forces Are Reported to Have Shot at Tibetans

BEIJING — Chinese security forces on Saturday fired into a crowd of Tibetans in a restive area of Sichuan Province after they tried to take away the body of a Tibetan man who had died after setting himself on fire that morning to protest Chinese policies in the Tibetan areas, according to reports from two Tibet advocacy groups and Tibetan officials in the exile government in India.

It appeared that at least two people had been hit by gunfire, and one of those might have been killed, said Kate Saunders, a spokeswoman for International Campaign for Tibet, which is based in Washington. Ms. Saunders said the group had spoken to at least two sources.

Another group, Free Tibet, said it had confirmed reports that a Tibetan woman was shot. There were unconfirmed reports that many others were also hit, said Stephanie Brigden, the director of the group, which is based in London. Security officials in the area could not be reached for comment on Saturday night.

The violence took place in the town of Aba, known in Tibetan as Ngaba, a focal point for protests against Chinese rule and the scene of civilian deaths during a widespread Tibetan uprising in 2008. Since then, it has been the site of at least 11 self-immolations, some of them fatal. Those setting themselves on fire have mainly been monks, nuns or former members of the clergy. The monks in Aba who set themselves on fire all come from the Kirti Monastery, where anger has grown over Chinese repression of religious practices.

The self-immolation on Saturday was the 16th since March 2011, when Phuntsog, a monk at Kirti, set himself on fire and died. The wave of self-immolations in the past year was preceded by that of one monk from Kirti in the spring of 2009. In total, at least 12 Tibetans have died through self-immolation since 2009, if the death on Saturday is confirmed. Scholars of modern Tibet say the self-immolations represent a new and disturbing protest strategy among the clergy.

Four of the self-immolations have taken place recently. There was no information on Saturday about the identity of the person who committed the latest act. Ms. Saunders said several witnesses reported that the police began beating the man after putting out his flames. “Tibetans at the scene became very distressed and angry and gathered together in what seems to be an impromptu demonstration,” she said in an e-mail.

The Tibetan government-in-exile in India issued a statement on Saturday saying that 700 people had surrounded the police station after the police took away the body of the person who had set himself on fire. "A confrontation ensued and an elderly Tibetan woman was reportedly shot dead by the police,” the statement said.

The statement added: “The People’s Republic of China’s government must take full responsibility for these cases of self-immolation. It is within its power to end these unfortunate incidents by adopting liberal policies for Tibet and Tibetan people.”

India should pay more $ to the exile government so that it could dispatch more self-burning activists to China.

Sounds like self-defense against a dangerous mob using human shields. This is very disturbing, as it means some kind of organized insurgency is brewing.

This is obviously being orchestrated from Dharmsala. China must launch missiles to destroy terrorist camps in india!

This is not about India, this is about chinese oppression of the tibetans. I though pakistanis were all for freedom and right of people to decide their state. But When tables are turned and Tibetans say it, you dirty your pants? DOUBLE STANDARDS!!

1) There is no Chinese oppression , this is just India crying about the bashing they got in '62 + the fact that they cant do anything about China, it's eating them up !!!!

2) With 30 armed insurgencies in your back yard + your horrendous human rights record, best to keep your mouth shut!

Well, Israel says Palestinians are an invented people, even though they are indeed extremely different from Israelis, but if a Tibetan isn't a monk, you can't tell them apart from Chinese...

We should consider a tit for tat policy of supporting Maoists and other armed anti government organizations to destabilize India if Indian government are hosting the likes of Dalai Lama.

This kind of heavy handiness is because Chinese believe in image above all and to maintain that image, all though not fooling anyone, they disregard basic human rights as a government and in their laws. Here is article I read where their public is slowily revolting

A wave of large-scale strikes and protests in China during the first week of 2012 leads experts to predict that the Chinese communist regime will be facing increasing pressure from millions of disgruntled farmers, workers, and other disenfranchised groups this year.
Protests have erupted in at least six Chinese provinces--Guangxi, Guangdong, Sichuan, Jiangsu, Henan, and Liaoning--in the first week of this year.

On Jan. 1, thousands of people, who lost their savings in an investment scam, took to the streets in the eastern province of Henan. Their anger was also directed at local officials for not protecting them.

On Jan. 4, workers in several provinces held wage-related strikes.

In Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, 5,000 to 10,000 workers in a state-run steel company began a three-day strike, demanding higher wages and bonuses.

In Wuzhou, Guangxi Province, all of the workers at a toy factory went on strike to protest the company’s delay in paying wages and it’s cancellation of year-end bonuses.

About 300 workers in a factory in Panyu, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, held a third strike when their demand for payraises wasn’t met.

During Jan. 4 -- 5, over 1,000 employees of a household appliance manufacturer in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, were striking over layoffs, pay cuts, and cancellation of their annual bonuses.
Thousands of beer factory workers in the northeastern port city of Dalian, Liaoning Province, also went on strike because of low wages and poor benefits.

In Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, about 500 veterans held a rally on Jan. 9 in front of the Bureau of Letters and Calls, protesting over poor social security benefits.


More Protests in Slowing Economy
Wu Fan, a U.S. based political commentator, says China saw an increase of protests after the 2011 Jasmine Revolution in North Africa and the Middle East. However, the numbers and scale of strikes and protests that have erupted in China during the first week of 2012 is not something the Chinese Communist regime expected

Wu said there are several reasons for these strikes at this time. One is that the Chinese New Year, the biggest holiday in China, is fast approaching and workers need money to celebrate the holidays with their families. However, because of the slowing economy, companies are unable to pay employees or have to lower wages.

Another reason for the sudden increase in strikes is the influence of the Wukan incident has given people more assertiveness to stand up for their rights. Wu said he expects a lot more protests in China this year.

“2012 is full of uncertainty in China, and many people are waiting for something big to happen,” Wu said.
Political and social commentator Huang Hebian agrees with this assessment. The Wukan protests have had the effect of awakening the masses across China, and this foreshadows increased tensions between the regime and workers and peasants, he told The Epoch Times.

Huang also predicts that more protests will take place in March during the National People’s Congress.
