China circled by chain of US anti-missile systems

That's a very good analysis oceanx!

I really don't know Indian politics that much and didn't realize their upper class' mentality/view of Asia.

Regarding the SCO I totally agree that it is non-significant at present, but I think the basic idea of creating a ring of neighboring countries with deeper cultural, political and to a lesser extend military cooperation to counter the US "containment" policy is be to applauded. Right now there are still some elements of distrust between the SCO members, i.e. between Russia and China, but the relation between the two has been steadily improving since 1991 through China's "soft power" and non-interference policy and closer economic ties. Russia has been suggesting moving SCO to take on a stronger military role and since 2005 there have been regular joint-military exercises, while creating a NATO counter-power is (far far) far-stretched and it's probably not in every member's interest, but if they can at least write the non-invasion policy into the SCO's present constitution to ensure they are free of harm from each other, even if its members are not required come to each other's aid when faced with a foreign war, it will still greatly enhance the regional stability and developments. Basically it comes down to one thing -- China has the most neighboring countries in the whole world (14) and establishing a trustful relation with its neighbors is critical if it wants to maintain a stable development environment. So while having a strong national defense is a big focus and critical in maintaining the status quo across the Taiwan strait, China also needs to use its soft-power and peacefully expand its sphere of influence, it is this strategy that has helped China in achieving its political status in the world today.

SCO still serves its purpose
If a country is in SCO, it cannot be in NATO

this is extremely important.

the reason for US currently "winning" is because the old chinese doctrine of 远交近攻 is, in the modern world, complete bulls*. in fact, every successful country since 1900 has been the opposite, 远攻近交. Britain didn't attack france and make friends with india, it made friends with france and then attacked india. the US attacked mexico early on, but then afterwards, only attacked people far away.

russia is a typical example. in the wars and conflicts it won in since 1900, it was either a defensive war (ww2), or a far away conflict won with soviet backing (vietnam, latin american revolutions). when it attacked Afghanistan, a neighboring country, the soviet union dissolved later.

the countries that lost their wars, like Germany and Japan, were the believers in China's ancient philosophy that attacked their neighbors and tried to make friends with far away powers.

China should take note of Germany and Japan's mistakes. Attacking your neighbors is a terrible strategic mistake, ever since 100 years ago.

CCP followed no doctrines either ways. The only consistent policy has been to play a "xiao bai tu".

. .
"xiao bai tu" -- heard of that term before but don't really quite understand it, care to elaborate if convenient?

Do you mean just being "soft" ??

.
Well, it's perhaps another word for "韬光养晦". The economic development has been given the highest priority that ruled both domestic and foreign policy making. Behave like a "xiao bai tu", so to speak.

Deng, Jiang and Hu should be remembered. It wasn't an easy job for China's rising. There will be no second chance or any other country to have it in the foreseable future. Take India or Vietnam as examples their development would always be affected by Chinese economy in one way or another. There's no way they can do as well in manufacturing sector within 10 to 20 years. :china::cheesy:

It's said that China's military budget will be around 80billion dollars this year, about 15+% increase. Thanks to Indians indeed.

Dude do you really think china needs to spend 80 Bn to take care of India :what: why are u mixing up things u guys are spending to be on par with US and suddenly you talk abt India which has nothing to do with it. At-least officially :hitwall:

Especially Deng should be remembered, many of his policies had profound influence in China and we are still benefiting from it -- the open door policy, the one china two systems policy, experimenting new ideas in special economic zones and introduce to the rest of the country if it works, his "white cat, black cat" pragmatic approach in decision making, it was not easy but he did some great things to the country.

That's a different debate mate. The downsides to Deng's legacy have also begun to show. One can't "pragmatize" away every issue of historical, right-vs-wrong proportions ...

And getting "rich" isn't the goal, really (unless the objective is to become Saudi Arabia at any cost - nothing wrong with KSA being wealthy btw).

The objective is, IMO and in lay terms, to become "competent".

There really is more to material things on God's green and dusty earth.

Anyways, I digress again ...
