From athletics and music to social media, new twists are drawing a response

Innovative ways of celebrating the National Day holiday this year — including use of new media — have drawn enthusiastic reviews, especially among the young.

Sunday was the 68th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Fudan University in Shanghai marked it with a school run.

"It is a very special and meaningful way of celebrating. Nowadays young people need a positive life attitude to strive for their dreams," said Mao Jianjiang, a teacher at the School of Chemistry, who took first place.

Modern technology is being used in many ways. On the WeChat social messaging app, some public accounts provide features that allow subscribers to write their wishes and have an electronic ink painting automatically made to match. The painting, with the subscriber's handwriting, can be shared in the Moments section.

China Central Television's business channel offered an online wish map. By scanning a QR code, users can create a heart on a map of China. The system will show the user's rank and the rank of provinces with the greatest number of wishes.

Tencent's QQ Music, a streaming and download service, posted an online album with a collection of 18 popular patriotic songs.

"I listened to the album early this morning. All the songs are sung by popular singers and some are theme songs of hit TV shows, which are very familiar to us," said Li Jiehao, 22, a senior at Kunming Medical College in Yunnan province.

"Patriotic songs used to appeal only to older people, like my grandparents. But now things are changing. The rhythm and lyrics are changing with the times and become closer to our daily lives," he said.

Holiday warmup activities started in September in many cities, encouraging college students to build a positive attitude through music and sports.

In the past two weeks, over 42,000 students from 10 universities joined in a national run event.

Peking University participants ran a total of 1,606 kilometers to take the top spot, according to the QQ Music run competition public account.

Media platforms provided livestreaming of Sunday events from the morning flag-raising at Tian'anmen Square to light shows staged in more than 30 cities.

On Saturday, President Xi Jinping and other senior leaders paid tribute and laid floral baskets to the Monument to the People's Heroes at Tian'anmen Square.

The event was to mark the country's fourth Martyrs' Day.

The leaders also attended a reception marking National Day on Saturday with 1,200 people from home and abroad.

Lol butthurt white boi, come and stop us. All that MAGA and the only thing you can do is put tariffs on Canadian soft wood lumber and bombardier airplanes cause Canada is weak and have no alternatives.
Glad that true color is revealed! My earlier observation has its ground. :coffee:

I have been learning over time and through many kinds of media and places, that some folks with disguised agendas like to attack the nation of China from sideways, avoiding to attack it directly as an entity of nation for it will be too naked... too ugly! I have been observing time and again that most of the time the attacks will be targeted to its form of governance, the ruling party, namely the CPP... they believe that the Communist label is the weak point good for attacks under the banner of democracy freedom human rights religions...

I will just say very briefly here... that folks of those kinds are "envy" of strong, united and progressing modern China ("envy" is just my soft word for many other much stronger, sinister motives). A stable, strong, continuous/sustaining, effective and efficient form of governance as shown by the CCP over decades is the very key to achieve a prosperous and harmonious society in modern China... [IND is a good learning case!] amidst the chaotic world and the wild wild west world order! Once China loses its consistently quality government and leadership, and instead being burden by the internal political struggles as experienced by the many nations adopting the multi-political parties with one-man-one-vote...esp. those nations with sizable populations, the rising Middle Kingdom will be weakening then will again be the lame target for those predators... just as its latest century-long history had seen and recorded!

Watch this presentation, it's a good reference!

Every time I see folks attacking the CCP yet mention that their real target is not the nation itself... and that the country should adopt the political system blessed by the established world order... I know these folks are deceptively dishonest and they are carrying some other agendas... and regardless who they are, whatever their colors or racial matter or beliefs are... they are just lobbing an indirect jab trying to hit the very foundation... not to say that they will bring some effects... I am more just sharing here my long time observation upon this trick or tactic... :P

Long Live People's Republic!! :china::china: 中华人民共和国万岁

Exactly.

The CPC lifted over 800 million Chinese out of poverty in the last few decades, and turned China from a broken and destroyed country into a great power.

So these foreigners will of course hate the CPC, because the CPC makes China strong. Whereas these foreigners want China to be poor and weak.

China hosts 461 mln domestic tourists during holiday
Xinhua, October 4, 2017

Some 461 million Chinese tourists traveled around the country in the first four days of the National Day holiday, the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) said on Wednesday.

The figure represents an increase of 11.4 percent year on year, the CNTA said.

Domestic tourists spent 385.6 billion yuan (57.55 billion U.S. dollars) in that period, up 13.6 percent from the same period a year ago.

The National Day holiday, which runs from Oct.1 to 8, sees a surge in passenger flows as leisure travel has become a major holiday entertainment due to improving living standard, a CNTA official said.

Railway traffic was busy with at least 10 million trips made everyday in the past four days. On Oct. 1, 15.03 million trips were made, an all time high, according to the China Railway Corporation.

Some 11.9 million trips were made on Oct. 3, up 9 percent year on year.

Outbound travel gained steam with the number of DIY (Do-It-Yourself) trips outnumbered that of the group travel.

According to Ctrip.com, a leading travel service provider, outbound trips are expected to exceed 6 million during the holiday.

One of China's two "Golden Weeks", this year's National Day holiday has been extended by one day as the Mid-Autumn Festival falls on Oct.4.

Travel demand appears to be stronger this year, possibly because the Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for family reunion.
