UAE FM calls on COAS

RAWALPINDI, Nov 23 (APP): Foreign Minister of United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan called on Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Tuesday.

The visiting dignitary remained with him for some time and discussed the matters of mutual interest.

COAS orders inquiry into alleged NLC irregularities

The Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, on Tuesday ordered a high level inquiry into alleged NLC irregularities.
A serving Corps Commander has been nominated to head the inquiry along with two Major Generals as members. Appropriate action will be taken on completion of the court of inquiry, as per relevant Army rules and regulations.

Army helps flood-hit family after publication of picture

PESHAWAR: The flood-affected family of Sher Afzal was pleasantly surprised on Tuesday when Pakistan Army soldiers arrived at his home in Banda Mulla Khan in Akbarpura area and brought for it relief goods and construction material.

Corps Commander Peshawar Lt Gen Asif Yasin Malik, who had seen a picture of the family members rebuilding their destroyed house on self-help basis, sent the relief goods. The picture had appeared in The News on Tuesday and the soldiers made their way into the village in the company of photographer Mohammad Sajjad.

The military authorities wanted to recognise and reward Sher Afzal’s family for taking the initiative to reconstruct its flood-destroyed house and rebuild their lives. Captain Hameed Ahmad of the 14 Sindh Regiment reached the village first and later soldiers arrived from Peshawar. They had brought packs of flour, sugar, vegetable ghee, pulses and tealeaves. They also gave the family cooking utensils and clothes.

More importantly, the soldiers brought bricks, bags of cement and doors for the family and promised to deliver roof for one room in their house. In fact, the army authorities promised to assist all the families in the flood-affected Banda Mulla Khan village with construction material to build one room each. An army official said the construction material would be made available soon to enable the flood victims to build the rooms before the harsh winter season sets in.
No doubt the picture of the Sher Afzal family that appeared in the newspaper focused attention on Banda Mulla Khan and got it help from the army. Sher Afzal’s son Inzar Gul told The News that he had four brothers and six sisters, four of whom were unmarried. He said their family did farming and barely survived on the income from agriculture before the floods and deprived it of its livelihood.

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif held a meeting with Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Kayani, a private TV channel reported on Wednesday. According to the sources, the meeting, held in General Headquarters (GHQ), discussed various issues, including measures taken for internal security and the war on terror. The chief minister has met the army chief thrice from September 2009 to March 2010. He last met him on March 14 earlier this year. ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani kicks off his second three-year tenure as the army chief today (Sunday).
Kayani is considered thoroughly professional with many good things to his credit like successful operations in tribal area, Swat and steps for de-politicisation of the army-controlled intelligence agencies.
Gen Mirza Aslam Beg, the army chief during Benazir’s first government, had neither received an offer nor given extension but was conferred on medal on the grounds that he had done a great favour for protecting democracy instead of usurping power through the force of baton.

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had refused any extension to the then army chief General Tikkah Khan, said former ISI DG Lt Gen (R) Hameed Gul.
Tikka was succeeded by Gen Ziaul Haq who in no time had usurped the power, and later hanged Bhutto.

Benazir Bhutto-led PPP offered extension to former COAS General Wahid Kakar who refused the offer.
Kayani, who would have been retired today had he not been given three-year extension, will now pass the baton onto his successor after giving a send-off to President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani in 2013, record indicates.

His revised retiring date, November 28, 2013, comes only short before the superannuating age of Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry who will put off the gown by December 13, 2013.
