SUKKUR, Aug 6 (APP): Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani visited Sukkur and Guddu Barrage on Friday and viewed the flood affected areas.

Army chief was briefed by top Irrigation officials about Sukkur Barrage as well as floods and monsoon rains.

Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani visited flood affected areas of Sindh and Southern Punjab today. He visited Sukkur Barrage and Qadirpur Bund and also witnessed relief and rescue operations by troops.

Later, he flew over the flood affected areas around Guddu Barrage, Rajanpur and Muzaffargrah. COAS appreciated the relief efforts and directed Army Formations to render all possibile support to the flood affectees. He reiterated that Army will also contribute meaningfully towards rehabilitation and reconstruction in affected areas.

US defence team arrives for consultations

ISLAMABAD: A US Department of Defence delegation led by the Under Secretary of Defence for Policy Michele Flournoy and acting US Central Command commander Lt Gen John Allen arrived in Islamabad on Thursday for Defence Consultative Group (DCG) meetings with their civilian and military counterparts.

According to the US embassy it is the 19th DCG meeting, which is the primary forum for exchanging views and coordinating defence policy discussions for strengthening the Pak-US defence relationship based on mutual respect, trust and interests.

The last DCG meeting was held in Washington in December 2009 under Pak-US Strategic Dialogue. Under-Secretary Flournoy and Lt Gen Allen both expressed their condolences to those who have lost loved ones in the recent floods and emphasised continued US support during Pakistan’s time of need. app

US, Pak defence teams agree to boost cooperation

ISLAMABAD: Defence strategists from the US and Pakistan agreed to strengthen the existing cooperation between the two countries to achieve the mutually agreed goals of peace, development and stability in the region at a two-day meeting, which concluded at the General Headquarters on Friday.

The 19th Defence Consultative Group (DCG) meeting was held in Rawalpindi from August 5 to 6. The Pakistani delegation was led by Secretary of Defence, Lt Gen (r) Syed Athar Ali, while the US delegation was headed by the Under Secretary of Defence for Policy, Michele A Flournoy. The DCG plenary session reviewed the Exchanges on Defence Planning (EDP), which took place in June and July 2010 and identified Pakistan’s immediate and long-term defence needs.

Both sides emphasised the importance of such exchanges in defining the mutual opportunities and challenges associated with multi-year cooperation between Pakistan and the US, and the value of prioritising and integrating Pakistan’s security and defence capability requirements. The meeting decided to continue the EDP process.

The Pakistani side also gave a briefing on counterinsurgency and counterterrorism. The US side acknowledged the extraordinary sacrifices given by the people and military of Pakistan in its efforts to defeat violent extremists. The Pakistani side also discussed the significant burden that increased military operations have placed on its forces and economy. The two sides also discussed prospects for peace and security in the region. The delegations also acknowledged the improvement in coordination of activities along the border with Afghanistan.

It also discussed ways to assist Pakistan in transitioning across the counterinsurgency phases of clear, hold, and build.

COAS expressed satisfaction over the rescue and relief operations being carried out by the Army in the flood affected areas. COAS issued orders that all resources be utilized for rehabilitation of affected people. It was further informed that a plan was under preparation for full rehabilitation of people and two corps would also make all out effort to restore infrastructure.

The DCG plenary session reviewed the Exchanges on Defence Planning (EDP), which took place in June and July 2010 and identified Pakistan’s immediate and long-term defence needs.

A dangerous development, Pakistan and the US have burnt each other twice before and it's going to happen again because the US and Pakistan (at least the people of Pakistan) are on different or parallel paths.

The US cannot be, that is to say, it's not within it's present structure, it is simply unable to be a friend nor ally to any Muslim majority country. That the armed forces of Pakistan are once again in the kind of cooperation with the US that the US is defining is a dangerous development for the people of Pakistan because it will once again bind Pakistan in a relationship of dependency and humiliation and brother countries such as Iran cannot know but look with suspicion at these developments. We have forewarned our readers of planning to coerse the Pakistani state into a much larger regional conflict.


Pakistan must first have correct relations with the US, these relations must be allowed to mature, because deep and long term relations with the US must first incorporate US commercial interests, these then provide for a possible (and the only legitimate) security relationship with the US. Pakistan and the US must first learn to walk with each other before they can run - the past relationship is best buried and if deeper relations are genuinely in the interests of Pakistan and the US, then these are best predicated on mutual comercial interest, shared values and worldview - neither of these elements, I would argue, seem obvious to observers.

Pakistani politiicans will have once again let down the Pakistani nation and subordinated Pakistani and regional interests to those a US hell bent of expressing civilizational hostility towards the interests of the Pakistani nation and state.

ISLAMABAD: Chief of the Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani came face to face with Higher Education Commission Chairman Dr Javed Leghari during a recent meeting of the board of governors of a university, at which reservations were expressed over drastic cuts in budgetary grants for public-sector universities.

Gen Kayani attended the meeting in his capacity as chairman of the board of governors of National University of Science and Technology (NUST). He was informed by the HEC chief about the poor financial health of government universities, sources told Dawn.

Dr Leghari is a member of the board. Normally he sends an official of the commission to attend meetings of public-sector universities. But this time he attended the meeting because it was being chaired by the COAS.

Sources privy to the meeting said that after the formal sitting of the board, Gen Kayani spared some time for Dr Leghari and had a cup of tea with him.

Although a top NUST official insisted that it was a routine BoG meeting, observers believe that in view of the ongoing controversy over verification of parliamentarians’ degrees and the government’s pressure on Dr Leghari’s family, the meeting could not be dismissed as a routine matter.

A NUST official said the focus of the meeting was on financial problems being faced by the university. Despite repeated attempts, ISPR chief Maj-Gen Athar Abbas could not be reached for comments.

The Tripartite Commission composed of senior military representatives from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Coalition Forces in Afghanistan, held its 31st meeting in Kabul today.

Delegations were headed by General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan Army, General David H. Petreaus, Commander International Security Assistance Force, Aghanistan and General Sher Muhammad Kirmi, Chief of General Staff of Afghan National Army.

The Forum reviewed the security situation in areas along Pak-Afghan Border. The participants showed satisfaction in the existing level of cooperation.

Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani also met President of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai and discussed matters of mutual interest.

LAHORE: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Kayani met Afghan President Hamid Karzai on the sidelines of the 31st Tripartite Commission meeting of military representatives in Kabul on Monday, where the two leaders discussed the new counter-terrorism strategy, a private TV channel reported. According to the channel, Kayani called on the Afghan president and the two leaders exchanged views on the new counter-terrorism policy chalked out to curb the menace prevailing in the region. He had travelled to Kabul to attend the 31st meeting of the Tripartite Commission of senior military officials from Pakistan, Afghanistan and the coalition forces in Afghanistan.
