Changing Bengali attitudes towards Bangladesh

I don't understand what are some posters trying to say, bangladeshis are not bengalis? :blah:
Bangladesh-country of bengals :welcome:
sorry OP :offtopic:

Bangladesh is composed of many nationalities, the majority of whom are ethnically Bangali. Others are Biharis, Chakma, Mog, Burmese, Tipra and many other tribals. All together, we are Bangladeshis. There are two groups who try to define it differently. One group, led by Al-Zakir, say we are just Bangladeshi and NOT Bangali. Another group, led by PM SHW, say all of us including the tribals are Bangali. I think, both these groups are wrong and need the basic lessons on political science, specially SHW.

It is not difficult to differentiate between two groups of Bangalis living in two countries. We can say Bangalis of Bangladesh and Bangalis of India.

This is the first reasonable comment on the matter. If I may point out, it is simply this and nothing more that Bangalis of India have understood to be true. It is also simply this that has led to a lot of harsh and unseemly language used by Bangalis, and others, of Bangladesh, against anybody at variance with them; anybody who did not accept a clear distinction between Bangladeshis of Bangladesh, and Bengalis of India.

The amount of bad blood generated by this intransigence of the Bangladeshi section is wholly disproportionate to the value of the distinction, which, it finally turns out, didn't exist.

Why go through this quagmire when there is an easy solution? To me it's clear and free of confusion. Perhaps this may help you understand what we mean by Bangladeshi nationalism. This explains the ideology behind Bangladeshi nationalism introduced and enforced by late president Zia-ur-Rahman.

Bangladeshi nationalism is a political ideology that glorifies and promotes the citizens of the People's Republic of Bangladesh as a distinctive cultural and political nation. In contrast with its rival Bengali nationalism, the ideology emphasizes a clear distinction amongst the Bengali people, that essentially Bangladeshi citizens are different from their linguistic and cultural counterparts in the Indian state of West Bengal which borders Bangladesh. The term also has religious significance and was initially developed by Bangladesh's first military regime in order to politically counter the ideology of the Awami League party, that professed Bengali nationalism and led the Bangladesh Liberation War on the basis of the establishment of a sovereign homeland for the Bengali people. As opposed to the secular Bengali nationalism, Bangladeshi nationalism stresses the ethnic and Islamic consciousness of the people of Bangladesh, where 89% of the population are Bengali Muslims.

Throughout the late 1970s and then in the 1980s, the concept of Bangladeshi nationalism evolved into the principal ideology for a large section of Bangladesh's political and military establishment. It had been fiercely promoted by President Ziaur Rahman and his formation of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, now one of two major political parties of the country, had centered around the development of Bangladeshi nationalism. Politically, the concept is today advocated by the center-right and rightist political parties in Bangladesh led by Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

Well, simply put it - the term "Bengali" is an ethnicity, not a race or religion. I am an ethnic Bengali, a Bangladeshi by nationality and Muslim by religion.

Chakmas for instance are NOT ethnic Bengalis, but are Bangladeshi nationals and Buddhist by religion.

Is that so hard to understand?

Why go through this quagmire when there is an easy solution? To me it's clear and free of confusion. Perhaps this may help you understand what we mean by Bangladeshi nationalism. This explains the ideology behind Bangladeshi nationalism introduced and enforced by late president Zia-ur-Rahman.

I think it is you who is confused and redundantly making things more complicated.

Bengali culture, and Bengali nationalism are two different things. What is a culture? It is a set of traits and habits that define a particular society. That's it! The food they eat, the language they speak, their social norms, etc. Culture can change over generations.

And besides, your sources does emphasize on the Bengali ethnicity along with nationalism.

Bengali nationalism on the other hand somehow came out of nowhere. But it exists in the AL for now.

You are not exactly a Bangladeshi, are you Al Zakir?

Tsunamis on tea cup but end up doing nothing.

Blindly worshipping people who are exempt of above rule.

Oh ****....

ok whats our nationality?? Why it was necessary for Hasina to change our nationality to Bangali from Bangladeshi quickly after coming to power? You guys are taking this to lightly! Why did OP use Bangali instead of Bangladeshi?? Yes it is a mistake! is he asking to his fellow citizens of Bangladesh who are only Bangali? what about chakmas, marmas Garos then? Why were they excluded from the question?

Bro there is another point of view, people who don't follow Ali -Zakir or PM SHW and can still think of us all as Bangladeshi's.

Reading through this thread tells me lots of people have deep unsettling issues.
I love the enthusiasm of many, but we should all try to work together towards prosperity and peace.

But the OP actually is not so updated about present condition in BD. We expect nothing from our country. We fault no one, it is our inability to find some decent good leader to lead us, that's all.

I would definitely go Indian against India's policy in water sharing, cowboy BSF's unruly behavior. These affect our economy & cause social unrest. And India never tries to put a positive image with us, public sentiments do matter in BD when Govt think of foreign affairs. Look at recent few comments of PM SHW to India's HC.

Rakhi bondon akta utshob. It's to strengthen the bond between a brothers and sisters and of course celebration follows suit. You sure bro you are Bangladeshi?? You do know that in Bangladesh we do celebrate a lot of festivals together, or don't you!?

Munāfiq is an Islamic Arabic term used to describe a religious hypocrite, who outwardly practices Islam, while inwardly concealing his disbelief (kufr), perhaps even unknowingly.

Now how does that relates to "Rakhi bandhan'" utshob!!!

Thanks.
