Careem, Uber Declared Illegal by Punjab Government

Calm down ! the bhatta you refering too is actually called TAX and is charged by every country in the wold ... nothing wrong with that

Im pretty calm, BETTI. Here we are not talking about the tax but a complete ban on the services, Open your god damn eyes before you reply or donate them if you cant use them. Did Mr Zahadi called you here to reply in his support and you mindlessly start blabbering? The above article is about a complete BAN n does not mention TAX anywhere. Where the HELL did you read the word TAX in the above article?

If anyone is ignorant and limited here is You. Since you keep calling me a PTI supporter when i have explicitly mentioned that i am not. Only shows immaturely in the upper portion of your head.

The government isnt paying for those roads from their mom's purse, we the people pay for the road hence they are our roads you DUMMY.

How will you pay the tax until this source of income of yours is not declared ?

Ishaq Dollar just wants to squeeze more money out of these companies who are providing quality transport services to the public, which the govt has FAILED to provide.

Thats not what the article is about, if you want to impose a TAX, you just do it without declaring a service illegal. I dont understand what a ban has to do with TAX. There is no reason to ban or declare a service illegal and ordering government officials to crackdown on them just to impose a tax.

Obviously he won't be banning it. Just a threat to regularize them and impose certain tax. That's it.

This article is about BAN and not about your freaking rant about paying TAXES. Open another thread about Taxes and ill sort you out there. Till then, just post something about the BAN if you wish to quote me.

Oh yea and Mr Dar personally told you that last night over dinner? Pfffft.. Stop spreading shit you dont know about. Thanks

Lol ... the govt can ban / tax as they wish why " if any entity wishes to operate in any country in the world must obtain valid permission and license from The state .. this is common sense however very visible from ignorant / childish personal comments Thats its beyond your kind of ignorant foolish chuddy

And how are your off topic comments any mature than a 5th grade student? We both know you came here because Salam Zaidhi was in trouble and mindlessly started posting without reading the first post. How were they allowed to operate in the first place since past 2 years if they didn't have a legit license and never fulfilled all the legal requirements? If that was the case, the culprits in the government should be punished first before a BAN on a public service thats benefiting millions of people everyday from all walks of life. You either must be a shallow transporter or just dont grasp the gravity of the situation and are constantly blabbering about TAX when thats clearly not the main point of argument here.

LAHORE / KARACHI: Punjab Government’s Provincial Transport Authority on Monday declared Careem, Uber and other ride-hailing services illegal.

A notification in this regard was sent to Lahore’s chief Traffic Officer to ensure these services are not allowed on Lahore’s roads. However, it is still unclear if the ban is valid for Lahore only, or other cities in Punjab are also part of the order.

The notification states that the two companies have been offering transport services “without registering private cars with any regulatory body.”

Here’s why people are deleting Uber from their smartphones

The notification says that since private cars are being used for transportation, and they must not be used for commercial purposes, such services are not only violating local laws but also pose as a security threat for the public.

The provincial government has also stated in the notification that the failure of Uber and Careem to obtain the required fitness certificate and route permits for their fleet of cars has resulted in “great loss to the government.”

According to the notification, field traffic officers have been directed to ensure that prompt action is taken against these illegal services and that they are not allowed to operate in the city.

Sindh govt asks PTA to block Careem app

A day after Punjab government banned ride-hailing services, the Sindh government also sought legal action against them.

The Sindh government has declared the use of private cars as taxis without mandatory legal permits as ‘illegal’ and has contacted PTA to block Careem’s mobile app.

Sindh Secretary Transport Tuaha Farooqui said there are three types of NOCs which the management of Careem and Uber had to obtain. “When private cars are used as commercial vehicles they have to pay Rs160 annually to the Excise and Taxation department. However, they are not required to change their number plates,” Farooqui explained while speaking to The Express Tribune.

Apart from that, he said that the management of the two companies have to get themselves registered with the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) and also need to get fitness certificate from them. Once these requirements are fulfilled, he said that they can operate freely.

According to him, they have written around 12 letters to Careem to comply with the legal issues. As for Uber, the secretary transport said their management committed to go through the legal processes, however, only eight of their vehicles were registered.

As for now, he said that they have written to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to block their services.

Management of Careem, did not respond to the issue, when contacted by The Express Tribune.

Ride-hailing apps

Pakistan was a relatively late entrant to the ride-hailing landscape – Dubai-headquartered Careem launched middle of last year and Uber in March, but the battle between the two heavyweights is only now truly underway.

Uber says Pakistan is one of its fastest growing global markets and Careem asserts that its local operations have grown at an average rate of 50 per cent month-on-month.

Such figures aren’t hard to believe in a country of 200 million people with abysmal public transport options. Both startups solve a very real problem – hence the fast rate of adoption. Uber drivers are being forced to stay on the road for up to 18 hours a day. But both Uber and Careem have so far been wary to venture out of the large urban centres of Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. Uber, in fact, doesn’t even operate in the capital city and hasn’t given a timeline when it plans to do so.

Yea great. Working fine all around the world including highly advanced economies with more more focus on security and now all of sudden our Paindo ministers and government officials are worried about their 0.005% tax revenue instead of looking at the peace and ease of use the public get. Careem and Uber has done more for Pakistani people than Metro Bus lines or any other government transport project in recent times. Shame and lanat on you all.

This has nothing to do with Federal Government so Dar isn't involved. This is only restricted to Punjab or may be Lahore. This looks like an effort to just get the department's "share" or to promote turkish cab company which has Hamza Shahbaz's shares.

If it was illegal, PM's daughter wouldn't be cheering the inauguration of UBER by Chairman of Punjab IT Board.

Thanks for the first reasonable educated post on this matter. We all are going to be effected if the haramkhor corrupt government and its equally haramkhor baygheret officials ban these apps (along with their limimted dummy public supporters who support such idiotic moves out of sheer ignorance n illiteracy or due to some other hidden motives) These corrupt b@stards should be giving subsidies to these 2 apps in a country where transportation is the absolute WORST in whole wide world and yet we are still unclear about the inside issue that sudden ban is being enforced causing problems to millions of people who have started to relay on Uber and Careem for their personal transport everyday.

No it has nothing to do with any ones share. This is how new business ventures are actually encouraged. You let their business flourishes and than ONLY impose certain taxes. Read the post of Devil Soul where Sindh Govt is also doing same. E-Commerce sites like Daraz.pk are next in line with having similar business model. We gonna see slight increase in their fares now.
