Arrested terrorist says the gang hoped to get away
Saturday, 29 November , 2008, 08:15

Mumbai: The lone terrorist nabbed alive by National Security Guard (NSG) commandos has reportedly his Mumbai Police interrogators that he and his 39 colleagues were given the impression that they would come back alive after carrying out their mission of mayhem in India’s commercial capital.

Ajmal Amir Kasab revealed that the terrorists were scheduled to sail out of Mumbai on Thursday, adding that their recruiters had even charted out the course to be taken with the help of a global positioning system device. Kasab also told police they had done a reccee of Mumbai few months ago. He said he had come along with eight operatives, posing as students and lived in a rented room at Colaba market.

Sources told a newspaper that this safe return bait was enough to convince the terrorists to undertake the audacious mission that has so far left over 120 dead, including several foreigners and over 300 injured.

According to Ajmal, the Lashkar-e-Taiba had trained all terrorists in marine warfare. According to one report, they received training in a special course called Daura-e-Shifa which converts a routine terror strike and into a specialized commando raid.

According to a Times of India report, Ajmal has revealed the name of his fellow jihadis, all Pakistani citizens, as Abu Ali, Fahad, Omar, Shoaib, Umer, Abu Akasha, Ismail, Abdul Rahman (Bara) and Abdul Rahman (Chhota).

The terror group is said to have set off for Mumbai on November 21 from an isolated creek near Karachi without the deadly cargo of arms and ammunition they were to use against the innocents in Mumbai.

The group received arms and ammunition on board a large Pakistani vessel which picked them up the following day. The vessel, whose ownership is now the subject of an international probe, had four Pakistanis apart from crew members.

A day later, they captured an Indian-owned trawler Kuber and killed all four fishermen on board. The skipper, Amarjit Narayan, was forced to take them to India and was killed immediately thereafter.

Ismail, one of the terrorists and a trained sailor, is said to have then guided the trawler towards Mumbai and reached its shoreline on November 26.

The group slowed down its advance and planned for a landing after dusk. They shifted to inflatable boats and disembarked at Badhwar Park in Cuffe Parade and began their killing spree, distributing themselves in batches of five.

Kasab, who sustained minor injuries in the police firing in Girgaum, was produced before the Esplanade Metropolitan Magistrate on Friday and a magistrate has remanded him to police custody till December 8.

Kasab and Ismail are said to be terrorists who gunned down Mumbai anti-terror squad Chief Hemant Karkare, Additional Commissioner of Police Ashok Kamthe and encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar.

Sources say that the satellite phone and global positioning system (GPS) map recovered from the trawler Kuber is now among the most crucial pieces of evidence.

The trawler was owned by Vinod Masani and had a five-member crew. Sources said that it is likely that the trawler was hijacked near the maritime boundary, where incursions by vessels on both sides are frequent.

Vinod Masani and his brother Hiralal have been detained for questioning by the Gujarat police. The four fishermen on the boat, Balwant Prabhu, 45, Mukesh Rathod, 20, and Natu Nanu, 20 and Ramesh Nagji, 37 are still missing.

EXCLUSIVE: 'We wanted to do a 9/11'

TIMESNOW.tv - Latest Breaking News, Big News Stories, News Videos -

In a startling revelation by Times Now, terrorist who was caught alive had confessed to investigating agencies that they had a plan to blow up the Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai.

Times Now spoke to officials who are investigating the sole surviving terrorist, identified as 21-year-old Azam Amir Kasav.

Kasav, according to sources said that their plans were to carry out a JW Marriot-like attack on the Taj and Trident. This was in reference to the the recent attack on the JW Marriot hotel in Islamabad. "They wanted to reduce the Taj and Hotel Trident, symbol of India's strength and prosperity to rubble. They planned on bringing down the buildings similar to the 9/11 attacks.

The terrorists had enough explosives to blow up the Taj hotel," Kasav reportedly told investigators.

In a sense to destroy the symbol of financial strength of the country and send shock-waves all across the globe, the terrorists wanted to do a 9/11 in India.

The above revelation came from the 21 year old Azam Amir Kasav, who hails from tehsil Gipalpura in Pakistan's Faridkot.

On Wednesday-Thursday (November 26-27), night Azam and his colleague opened fire at CST before creating havoc at Metro and then moving on to Girgaum Chowpatty in a stolen Skoda, and where they were intercepted by a team from the Gamdevi police station. Azam shot dead assistant police inspector Tukaram Umbale.

But in that encounter Azam's colleague was killed and he himself was injured in the hand. He pretended to be dead giving rise to the news that two terrorists had been killed. However as the 'bodies' were being taken to Nair Hospital, the accompanying cops figured that one of the men was breathing.

According to sources, the casualty ward of Nair hospital was evacuated and the Anti-Terror Squad moved in to interrogate him. Azam who was tight-lipped initially, cracked upon seeing the mutilated body of his colleague and pleaded with the medical staff at Nair to save his life. "I do not want to die," he reportedly said. "Please put me on saline."

A team of around five officials are interrogating Kasav. Sources have told Times Now that each terrorist had three bags. The terrorists were well equipped to bring the Taj down. Explosives are still present in the Taj and may be even the Trident. In fact, a significant amount of explosives reached Mumbai before the terrorists.

The entire set of explosives have not yet been used, and is believed to be lying around.

They travelled in a boat from Karachi to Porbandar. In Porbandar they boarded "Kuber" in which they sailed to Mumbai. They killed the crew of Kuber. They then boarded speed boats and reached Budhwar Park, Mumbai. They reached the very night the attack was carried out - November 26.

True, But i am putting no bias that could be reason why External Affairs minister did not point at BD.

Terrorist from Faridkot is all over the net. Good thing is that this guy is alive he may change his story till confirmed.

The Jihadi mentality is truly amazing!

First some Jihadis from HuJI blow up Marriot most probably in an attempt to get Zardari.

Next some other Jihadis from LeT try to blow up Hotels in Mumbai as "revenge" .

Is there anybody out there who can explain this insanity.

Now we can also tell you who this man is and how he has become the vital link for investigating agencies to crack the terror plot. His name is Azam Amir Kasav, he is 21 years old, speaks fluent English, hails from tehsil Gipalpura in Faridkot in Pakistan, and is the only terrorist from this audacious operation to have been captured alive. An ATS spokesperson confirmed that the man captured was indeed the one photographed by us.

I want to live: Captured Pakistani terrorist Azam

MUMBAI: His swaggering image as he walked around Chhatrapati Shivaji terminus dispensing death was captured by Mumbai Mirror photo editor
Sebastian D' souza, and was the first glimpse of the terrorists who have held Mumbai hostage over the last 48 hours.

On the night of Wednesday-Thursday Azam and his colleague opened fire at CST before creating havoc at Metro and then moving on to Girgaum Chowpatty in a stolen Skoda, and where they were intercepted by a team from the Gamdevi police station . Azam who was tight-lipped initially, cracked upon seeing the mutilated body of his colleague and pleaded with the medical staff at Nair to save his life. "I do not want to die," he reportedly said. "Please put me on saline."

Ammunition, a satellite phone and a layout plan of CST was recovered from him. According to sources the young terrorist has given the investigators vital leads including how the chief planner of the Mumbai terror plot had come to the city a month ago, took picture and filmed strategic locations and trained their group and instructed them to "kill till the last breath." Every man was given six to seven magazines with fifty bullets each, eight hand grenades per terrorist with one AK-57 , an automaticloading revolver and a supply of dry fruits.

Azam reportedly disclosed that the group left Karachi in one boat and upon reaching Gujarat they hoisted a white flag on their boat and were intercepted by two officers of the coast guard near Porbandar and while they were being questioned one of the terrorists grappled with one of the officers slit his throat and threw the body in the boat. The other officer was told to help the group reach Mumbai. When they were four nautical miles away from Mumbai there were three speedboats waiting for them where the other coastguard officer was killed. All the ammo was then shifted into these three spedboats they reached Colaba jetty on Wednesday night and the ten men broke up into groups of two each. Four of these men went to the Taj Mahal hotel, two of them to the Trident hotel, two towards Nariman House at Colaba and two of which Azam was one moved to CST.

Azam, who was at Nair hospital for nearly four hours, was taken away by the intelligence agencies in the early hours of Thursday to an unknown location after the hospital authorities had removed the bullet from his hand and declared that his condition stable. But it seems the police grilling was so intense that before he left the hospital for an undisclosed location he pleaded with the police and the medical staff to kill him. "Now , I don't want to live," he said.

Pakistan-Based Terrorists Suspected in Mumbai Attack

Little is known about the terrorist group that calls itself Deccan Mujahideen and claimed responsibility for the series of attacks Wednesday, in Mumbai, India, that left more than 150 dead, including as many as six Americans.

So far, most security analysts, intelligence experts and news reports have focused on two potential culprits: Lashkar-e-Taiba, a terrorist group in Pakistan, and Indian Mujahideen, a shadowy organization in India.

Lashkar is the leading contender, a U.S. counterterrorism official told FOX News, though the group denied any role in the attacks.

"Lashkar-e-Taiba strongly condemns the series of attacks in Mumbai ... Lashkar has no association with any Indian militant group," Abdullah Gaznavia, chief spokesman of the group, told Reuters.

Since Lashkar-e-Taiba was founded in 1989 in the Kunar province of Afghanistan, the group has grown into one of the largest and most active terrorist organizations in South Asia, and its fighters have been actively fighting Indian security forces in Kashmir since 1993.

India has accused the group of carrying out deadly explosions in Mumbai in 2003 that killed 55 people and injured 180, as well as an armed raid on India's parliament in 2001 that brought India and Pakistan to the brink of all-out war.

But the group has also been accused of carrying out attacks in Pakistan in opposition to the policies of former President Pervez Musharraf, leading to its ban in Pakistan since 2002.

The group is known to operate training camps that have been tolerated by Pakistan's powerful Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency because of their potential use in conflicts against India and in Afghanistan. Lashkar-e-Taiba and Al Qaeda have shared training camps in Pakistan, but no one yet is linking Al Qaeda to the attacks in Mumbai.

A Hindu newspaper reported early Saturday that three of the captured terrorists have confessed to being members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, with one of the suspects allegedly from Pakistan's Peshawar area, and local media report that one of the captured gunmen was identified as Abu Ismail from Faridkot, Pakistan.

And police reportedly intercepted communications between the terrorists in the Punjab language, which is spoken in Pakistan.

But some believe the group could be related to Indian Mujahideen, which claimed responsibility for serial blasts in Delhi in September that killed 20 people and bombings in Ahmedabad in July, when 45 died. In September, the group warned Indian authorities that Mumbai would be the next target.

India officials believe Pakistanis are behind the attacks.

"According to preliminary information, some elements in Pakistan are responsible for Mumbai terror attacks," Pranab Mukherjee, India's foreign minister, told reporters on Friday in the western city of Jodpur, though he declined to identify the evidence. He added that Pakistan had assured New Delhi it would not allow its territory to be used for attacks against India.

India has long accused Islamabad of allowing militant Muslim groups, particularly those fighting in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, to train and take shelter in Pakistan.

However, with attention focusing on groups with links to Pakistan and the Kashmir region, Husain Haqqani, Pakistan's ambassador to the United States, issued a strong response.

"It is unfair to blame Pakistan or Pakistanis for these acts of terrorism even before an investigation is undertaken," he said. "Instead of scoring political points at the expense of a neighboring country that is itself a victim of terrorism, it is time for India's leaders to work together with Pakistan's elected leaders in putting up a joint front against terrorism."

And earlier Friday, Pakistan's Defense Minister Ahmed Mukhtar strongly affirmed his country "is not involved in these gory incidents."

Meanwhile, a team of FBI agents is flying to India to investigate, and a second group of investigators was on alert to join them if necessary, U.S. authorities said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the operation.

FOX News' Catherine Herridge and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Punjabi is not only spoken in Pakistan. Someone should also ask these terrorists why they were wearing orange bands on their wrists, and why they don't look or sound Pakistani.

But Indian media was contradicting itself right now by saying that these boys rented rooms and have been in city for some time.
