Cancelled Russian LFI Project Now JF-17 Fighter

The LFI (Lyogkiy Frontovoy Istrebitel, Light Frontline Fighter) project was intended to develop a lightweight fighter with respectable air-to-ground capabilities.

Yakovlev proposed the Yak-43, an upgraded Yak-41 with a stealthier design and more powerful engines. After neglecting the MFI competition, Sukhoi decided to submit a design for the LFI called the S-37 (unrelated to the heavyweight Forward-swept wing fighter). This S-37 resembled the Gripen in that it had canard foreplanes, a delta wing and one engine.

Mikoyan entered the MiG izdeje 33 design, which bore a resemblance to the F-16. MiG could not afford to develop both the MFI and LFI, so their LFI entry was eventually withdrawn. The program was subsequently cancelled in 1992, and no prototypes of the three designs were built, although MiG sold the izdeje 33 concept to China, which resulted in the JF-17 Thunder fighter.

That would be a blow to Pakistani members, who believed JF-17 was designed by Pakistan and China.

Nice find.

.
Can this speculative thread be deleted kindly there is ample proof that Chinese and Pakistan engineers developed

:P if Russian developed it I am sure Indians would have been accesing the designed for local development which proves beyond doubt who created JF17 thunder, the fact that India never developed a pencil with out copying it from someone , or assembling it with assembly lines proves they have long way to go before they can create their own fighter that flies

What is with you people reading anything and believing everything?

The only thing that remains common between LFI and JF-17 is that they are intended for the same purpose, and that is Light Frontline Fighter.

Today as it stand, there is zero contribution by Russia except the engine (which is paid for).

Cancelled Russian LFS Project Now Iran HESA Shafaq

The focus of the LFS (Lyogkiy Frontovoy Samolyot, Light Frontline Aircraft) project shifted to creating a strike fighter with significant surface attack capability, while retaining respectable air combat abilities. Work on the project began around 1994, although the program was officially initiated in 1999.

Yakovlev's entry resembled the JSF entry from BAE, as the JSF program purchased information from the Yakovlev design bureau Initially, Sukhoi's entry was the S-52, a lightweight version of the S-32 retaining the Forward-swept wing wing and canards, but with only one thrust vectoring engine and boxed air intakes to the side.

Sukhoi later proposed the S-55, a design based on their S-54 trainer aircraft. The S-55 bore a strong resemblance to the Su-27, although it only had one engine. Sukhoi later proposed the S-56, a stealthy fighter design with canards and one engine. Mikoyan proposed the I-2000, an aircraft with an unusually large LERX which gave it an ability to sustain controlled flight at a very high Angle of attack.

The LFS project was canceled in 2001 in favor of the PAK FA program, although the I-2000 later influenced the design of the HESA Shafaq.

D.E.L.E.T.E Please we need some quality discussionon JF17 thunder not speculation .....

We all know Chinese and Pakistani engineers worked day and night to develop thunder and the fact it flies is proof

If russians had it .. lol I am sure india would have scratched russian you know what to get them to give it to em ... so

this thread has to go

I mean really ... Thunder ? Made in Russia lol what a joke

Jf-17 was built as a joint venture between Pakistan and China, it is flying in our skies today and has successfully conducted operations in the current military exercise.

I think its about time people got over the fact that Jf-17 is derived from some cancelled fighter program of Russian, Romanian or any other origin as it does not matter anymore as. Its being manufactured in Pakistan and flying in Pakistan. Your only wasting your time and energy my friend.

The development of this fighter, the improved copy of Soviet MIG-33 (which R&D was terminated due to absence of money at the beginning of 1990s), started at Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corp., in 1994-95.

More exactly, MIG-33 designers resumed this terminated project in Moscow under supervision of experts from Chengdu city and with financing from PLA. In 1995, Chengdu Corp. purchased 100 units advanced RD-93 jet engines, for the future FC-1, at Klimov Aircraft Corp. in St. Petersburg.

In 1997-98, Pakistani Air Forces joined this project; Pakistan provided significant part of R&D financing and is obliged to purchase one half of the future FC-1 production. Despite all the efforts, the project dealt with a lot of problems, and only at the beginning of 2001 did it enter the last stage.

Chinese Airshow a Hit With the Military

Its not speculation dude. Read a little on the internet. There are lots of sources suggesting the same.

We are here to discuss and learn. Be open to new ideas. :pakistan:

Perhaps you would like to post some factual/pictorial evidence/reference to prove that the design was indeed sold to China by Russia.

This is the cancelled IAR-95. Some people suggest FC-1 was built by buying tech of this plane, while other believe it is inspired from Mig Project 33

I am not saying FC-1 is a copy or anything. I am just open to ideas. Would be happy if someone rubbishes this idea.

Can people make up their mind as what JF-17 is ??

Its a copy of F-5s.

Its a copy of F-16s.

Its a copy of MiG-33s.

Its copy of some European Ex-Eastern Block country.

Can anyone see the pictures of these aircraft and see which aircraft copy it is.

JF-17 is no copy of any fighter aircraft, 100%.

But yeah it has influence of different best fighter aircraft merged together to make it into one good balanced fighter.

Which of the above designs has DSI intakes, F-18 kind of LERX, Wings looking like F-16s, etc etc.

So it should be now clear, that JF-17 is not a copy of one aircraft, rather it got its influence from different fighter aircraft and making it into one unique design.

And as for Indian members, don't jump much, as we all know about the designs of yours and their origin and what the look alike.

First it was a Russian design and now its Romanian? IAR-95 was a Romanian design was it not? Following is the original design layout, and I leave it to the members to decide if the JF-17 is a copy of Romanian IAR-95.

Getting a design and then perfecting it and improving it and making it into something else is different compared to copy of the original design.
