Canada should get out of is cold war mindset and move the majority of its warships from Halifax to the B.C. coast in response to the Chinese navy’s aggressive military buildup, say defence analysts.

The U.S. government has already announced its plan to put 60 per cent of its naval assets on its west coast by 2020 as part of its plan to make the 21st century “America’s Pacific Century” — a term coined by former U.S. secretary of state Hillary Clinton.

The Canadian military’s tiny fleet of warships is split up on a 60-40 basis favouring the Atlantic coast, with seven frigates and two destroyers in Halifax compared to five frigates and one destroyer in Esquimalt.

China is expanding its own naval fleet and showing greater assertiveness in its maritime disputes with its neighbours
.
When submarines, maritime patrol and supply vessels are included there are a total of 18 vessels assigned to Halifax, where approximately 5,000 military and 2,000 civilian personnel are located, and 15 to Esquimalt, where roughly 4,000 military and 2,000 civilian employees are stationed.

Analyst David McDonough said Ottawa should reverse the emphasis, with at least 60 per cent of the frigates and destroyers in B.C.

He also argued that once the submarine fleet is fully operational two of the three subs in service (one will always be in the Esquimalt dry dock undergoing repairs and upgrades) should be based out at Esquimalt.

“Nowadays, the threat on the East Coast is pretty mild, whereas the Pacific is a more dangerous environment,” McDonough, a post-doctoral fellow at the University of B.C.’s political science department, said in an interview Friday.

The U.S., Japan and Australia have all taken steps to expand their military muscle in response to the Chinese military’s naval buildup. Fears of a potential Pacific conflict have been exacerbated by China’s territorial disputes with the Philippines and Japan.

McDonough argued in a blog post last month that Canada could use its Victoria-class diesel submarines to develop an anti-submarine warfare capability in the region, though such a commitment would ultimately require costly purchases of a new fleet of subs and a replacement for the aged Aurora maritime patrol aircraft.

Such a contribution would help the cash-strapped Americans “at a time when China is expanding its own naval fleet and showing greater assertiveness in its maritime disputes with its neighbours,” he wrote.

There is a big difference between "should shift" and "has shifted" for those too dumb to comprehend. Holy mackerel, the comprehension level displayed by some members here is worse than a first grade level.

Its normally been Russian aggression, but Chinese? News to me. China's interests dont go beyond the SCS.

Anyhow apparently the Russians had more detailed maps of our undersea waters than we did.

. .
China has no interest in seeking war with U.S. However, China is not afraid of any wars added upon her either!!!

I suppose U.S. and its running dogs have already learnt the lessons long time ago.

Just sends a message that you got other countries to contend with if you go to war with U.S.

hmmm everyone knows BC is like a mini hong kong anyways, so shifting would not make a difference in our priorities and lets be clear as our military will likely not even consider this as we are more concern with North. However I do have to give credit to the warmongers that are trying to pit Canada against a economic ally with significant ties to our economy though I do wish we could still maintain our positions on human rights while we do business the PRC. Again my opinion are meaningless as our government is quite in love with the Chinese investments and donations so do not expect any response on this side of the border.

.
My opinion? It's needless fear mongering by the conservative government. Canada has nothing to fear from China, as any Chinese troops that enter Canadian airspace would be torn apart by our air force, or freeze to death. It'll be a very VERY long time till China has the capability to effectively threaten Canada.

Honestly, China and most Chinese have no interest beyond its "traditional" sphere of influence. China simply has no history of expanding beyond its surroundings. This is why East China Sea and South East China Sea are high on national defense because China lost all those islands, territories and protectorates since end of Qing. This is partly a problem with a country with old history. It is very hard to let the past go for a nation that fell from top to bottom within a century, so you have a combination of determination to come back and tinge of revenge, which I might be wrong.

Oh my, I just have no clue why some Viets hate China so much, lol. I think some of you Chinese members living in China should really relay the message to other Chinese that Viets are hostile! Maybe we should start repatriating Viet national in China and I should simply ignore each of Viet members, lol.

Also to some members, stop using "white," "western" "other Asians" etc. to generalize entire people. Those terms are inaccurate and generate confusion. The world is not divided along color lines.

I think you quoted the wrong person. BTW - many Viets consider themselves a Chinese ethnicity.

China robbed our Islands 1956, 1974, 1988 and lie about the history, it's the matter.

Whenever you have a Chinese National don't have a clue why they world has turned against them, just kindly let them know about this forum.......

Country can do whatever they want, Canada can focus all their naval asset for MARS for all they care, why Chinese in this forum have something to say when the words like "War, Stability, Shift, Direction, Against " match with the word "China"

Then when some Chinese say "We don't have a beef with anybody" yet a few post down the road, some poster posting thing like "China will be the center of the world" and "White inferiority theory" They will instantly know why they are targeted by almost everybody.
