They can, but only if they cede some economic sovereignty, which would defeat the object of them gaining independence in the first place.
Also their place in the EU would in no way be guaranteed. They would have to reapply and Spain would not accept them due to their own problems with Catalonia and the Basque region etc.
Alex Salmond seems to have got so far on nationalistic rhetoric.

UN and not NATO represents the global community .

and therefore UN sanctioned , UN approved military actions should be allowed .
