Bullet trains for India with Indo-China Strategic Economic Dialogue

First take the case of current Indian middle class. They often go on vacations. For a holiday trip, many like train rides as they are more comfortable, one can enjoy scenic beauty etc. I personally like train rides many times. Like going by train and coming back by flight.

Another thing is, corporate people. Of course flights save time, but given a choice and low cost than air ticket, you can understand, a good railway coach or economy class seat on plane. Many wants comfort.

Job generation. Believe it or not, railways creates more job than air travel. It provides job to less capable and more opportunity to people.

People want privacy. Few people want more space and less encroachment of personal sphere which happens in airplanes. A person will happily pay equal amount if the train takes 1 or 2 or even 3 hours more but offer more comfort, more privacy and more room.

I can give other points too. Consumer choice, social influence, economic gains, possible problems etc. etc.

Seriously dude. We have to do something about this. Core dump ho jata hai .

Other than the job creation, all other points are based on assumptions and on personal psych.

1) Not all the air traffic in India can provide the services for the people in India which has huge middle class.

2) When the distance between the two cities is less people choose HSR.

3) HSR is always going to be cheaper than air travel.

4) There is a need for India to improve its rail infrastructure.

Nope buddy. Its from marketing research done by many companies and in many fields. Consumer psychology is an important of any product or services. Also the target customer may not be the one you think.

Also you have to keep in mind that we have to develop at core levels, solve basic problems but also aspire for future development at higher scale so that we don't lag behind.

There are many middle classes struggling to meet their ends meet. It depends on which version of middle class you're taking into consideration, the GOI definition or the international definition.

2) When the distance between the two cities is less people choose HSR.

HSR will only be profitable between metro cities with least stop possible, that stops it from serving mass population.

3) HSR is always going to be cheaper than air travel.

From all the HSR operational throughout the world, the difference is marginal.

4) There is a need for India to improve its rail infrastructure.

Exactly, without improving existing infrastructure it's naive to even think about HSR. We need better industrial corridor connectivity to improve the infrastructure. HSR has little or no impact on it.

The guys who are paying double and triple the Indian rail charges to go by buses because of non availability of berths.

Use the same logic of tourist uses here, They also stop at cities but they are serving lot of passengers

Below is the article which explains common myths about HSR

India is establish Industrial corridors in the next decade like "Delhi-mumbai" "chennai-Bangalore" and many and these corridors needs HSR.
