The exiled Dalai Lama just represents himself, and at most his followers in Dharamsala. He shouldn't claim to speak on behalf of the Buddhism worldwide! Moreover he is not the reprentative of the Buddhism. And his saying of such similarity here is just a diplomacy chit-chat or politician talks. From theological standing point there's NO such similarity!!!
The said similarities between Buddhism and the teaching of Abrahamic religions are just illusion. All may claim the values of love, compassion and self-discipline, but the resemblances just stop short there
Here I enlist few (just partially) THEOLOGICAL DOCTRINES from the Abrahamic religions (in particular the Christian and Roman Catholic):
1. Human-being are born into this mortal world in SINFUL NATURE, that is carrying the "ORIGINAL SIN" by birth! As soon as the baby is born into the world, he or she is already sinful!
The sinful nature can only be redeemed by accepting the figure of Jesus Christ as the savior and is the Only Way to come to the Lord Father in Heaven as well.
Be kind-hearted and doing good deeds alone are not sufficient and won't save human being from rotting in the hell, only by accepting Jesus Christ will entitle them to reside in Heaven!
2. Believer of Jesus Christ MUST convey His good news of salvation to every corner of the earth, to bring in even more believers and to save more souls from rotting in the hell FOREVER! Note, this act is mandatory, not an option! The believer of Jesus Christ must multiply its congregation members, incl converting those from other religions.
3. This life form on earth happens ONLY ONCE, there's no such concepts of karma, reincarnation. Save your soul by accepting the Jesus Christ as your Saviour, it is THE ONLY WAY to heaven! Life is a one-time affair, accept Jesus Christ and be granted a seat in Heaven, or ignoring him then hell is your soul's permanent dwelling forever and ever! There is no such thing as the second chance.
4. A tithe of 10% of one's all income (it includes all kinds of income) MUST be donated to Church each month to fulfill one's religious obligation to the Jesus Christ.
and so on....
In fact the theological doctrine #2 was used as one of the pretext by the European for conquering and colonization in the Asia, Africa, and Latin America... among other reasons was to spread over the "Good News" of Jesus Christ salvation
Now please tell once again where one finds the similarity between Buddhism teaching and Abrahamic ones from the theological doctrines???
I learn both so i can be sure the said similarity is just an illusion... they are simply nonexistent!
TIBETAN BUDDHISM or more precisely LAMAISM would develop as a modification of Mahayana Buddhism by Tantric rituals of erotic mysticism and by ancient shamanism and sorcery of the Bon, a primitive, indigenous animistic religion of that region, which believes in the existence of spirits separate from the body.
Tantrism, an arcane cult within Hinduism, centering around erotic, magical and mystical rites, was influential in the development of orthodox Hinduism, of Mahayana Buddhism and later of Lamaism. The Tantric cult has elaborate devotional ceremonies, and it is held that only through ritualistic sexual union would the gods respond to the initiated. Female divinities are worshiped, and women are accorded high places in Tantrist cults.
The Dalai Lama would be revered by his followers as a divine reincarnation of the Boddhisattva Avallokiteshvara, mythical ancestor of the people of Tibet. A boddhisattva is worshiped as a deity in Mahayana Buddhism. It is the name given to an enlightened being who compassionately refrains from entering nirvana in order to save others. The most well-known boddhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism is the Goddess of Mercy.
While the Dalai Lama became traditional leader of Tibet, the spiritual supremacy resided with the Chief Abbot of the influential Tashilhunpo Monastery near Shigatse, 200 kilometers southwest of Lhasa. He is the Panchen Lama, a reincarnation of Amitabha, the Buddha of Light.

Abrahamic religions (also Abrahamism) are the monotheistic faiths of Middle Eastern origin, emphasizing and tracing their common origin to Abraham or recognizing a spiritual tradition identified with him. They are one of the major divisions in comparative religion, along with Indian religions (Dharmic) and East Asian religions (Taoic).
